http://gizmodo.com/5121311/reports-30gb-zunes-failing-everywhere-all-at-once
It seems to only be affecting 30GB zunes and there's an unconfirmed hypothesis that it's only those with the latest firmware. Pretty weird.

If they tell me "Your Zune is 2 years old go buy a new one" I'm getting an I-Pod.
EDIT: Apparently all I have to do is let the battery run down and wait 'till tomorrow.

Edited by: P''uck on 01/01/2009 04:11:16 First of all; I have an iPod, I got it for cheapz back then.
But even I cannot understand why anybody would want either an Ipod OR a zune... I mean, okay a 30 gig zune would be funny for the novelty factor of this bug, and an iPod is nice if I think my wii feels lonely, but in my book an electronic device should not be a major pita and generally a menstruating, pms'ing ***** about its job. Which both are, when it comes to their most basic functionality: receiving and playback of files.
Also, why would anybody fork out for a device that supports DRM is beyond me. This is not exactly sending the right message.
And yes I feel dumb for buying that iPod.
Oh, and, not that I think discmans are useful in any way, but: that one is still great.

Why I bought a Zune:
1) It's not an Ipod. I don't want to be associated with Apple fanboys 2) Back in 2006, it was the only decent hard-drive based media player that nativity supported WMA (which is what all my music is in)
Up until today I've never had any problems with it, so I'm not too annoyed. Some people tell me Zunes are ugly but aesthetics has never been something I value - it does what I bought it for, so I've never seen any reason to replace it.
The software is bloated garbage and always has been, but I have it set up so the Zune software only loads when I manually start it and use winamp / WMP to play music on my computer and only use the Zune software to sync, which reduces the annoyance factor to near zero.

Yeah, THAT pretty much was a reason. But these days I'd rather have some random usb stick with player functionality (which I could replace ten times for the cost of one of the majors), and omg I think I can live through the fact I would need to go an extra length to use it for visual media.
Also, that DRM crap really is a problem. They tell us "We're enhancing your music experience" or some other unbelievably stupid bull****, that is outright insulting, and we buy it. It's like saying "YES, we ARE dumb enough, now screw us over some more, PLEASE"

Confirming my Zune works again :)
As for DRM, I've never dealt with it. More like refused to deal with it. I buy all my music on CD, rip to my computer, copy to my Zune.
I don't like the idea of buying something and then being subsequently locked out of it later, which is why I don't buy DRM music or buy anything with SecureROM on it. I can deal with Steam's DRM model and XBox Live because those devices are always connected to the internet and your license is tied to your user account, not any particular device. But I have yet to see any DRM method with music that I can get onboard with. I have bought a few MP3 tracks off Amazon though.
Renting is a whole different story - but ZunePass doesn't carry any of the artists I like since they tend to be obscure Euro groups that nobody in the US has ever heard of. At least they didn't last time I checked.
For movies and video, Amazon's Unbox online service is just better, I think. I don't like to buy DVDs, they're not a good value for me (my rent vs own decision is very simple - if I'll use it enough that I'd pay more to rent over it's lifetime I'll buy it, if not I'll rent it. The magic number is generally around 5 uses. Music is well above this (I'll listen to a good CD dozens of times), movies generally only score 1 or 2).
And holy wall of text! I think I'll go to bed now.

Moral of the story? Buy Sansa and buy 2x8GB MicroSdD's, unless you really are dying to become irridated in iSmug.
I can't wait for my Sansa to arrive, we haven't used the iPods we have in house in over a year as iTunes just makes me want to fly a plane into $teve Failures face just to make sure the world is rid of that fool.

Edited by: Meiyang Lee on 01/01/2009 18:59:19 The problem apparently fixes itself though, the MS Official response seems to be to simply let it drain itself and restart it after 12:00 GMT on januari 1st 2009. Since it then "resets" the clock to the new year it'll work quite nicely again.

Uh with Xbox live while they charge you 50 USD a year (or 4.16 a month) there is no limit to how many games you can play online. Hellofahlot better than 15 dollars a month per MMO in my opinion. -------------------------------- To borrow a phrase:
