Happy new year, crossed fingers with regards Yellow Stone.. and.. :)
Does anyone have any experience in replacing:
Apache with IIS, and, MySQL with MS SQL Server
for a PHP based web application?
I'm getting fed-up with the differences between Linux distributions and what will or won't work on them. So I'm looking at alternatives and came across this blog.
Thoughts?

if you want to run a PHP app on windows, WAMP (Linkage) is a good option.
Getting PHP apps to work though IIS, though relatively straightforward in theory is not fun in practice. MySql to MSSQL would require a rewrite of the app afaik (though not all of it).

Sure, IIS, mssql, php on windows works, but its beyond me why someone would want to replace free system (LAMP) that does the job perfectly with a system that costs a ton and might do the job almost as well (WIMP).
Your choice ofcourse.

I've already paid for the required MS licenses so that's not the issue. My issue is with:
a. deployment and, b. on-going systems management.
Deployment is a pain for me at the moment because the exact versions of mysql/apache/php and linux required by the developers is proving hard to obtain for the Linux environment in the co-lo (Cent OS 5.2 on Citrix Xen) and building them from source is causing me lots of issues.
On-going systems management is purely down to skillz. I have a wealth of Windows enterprise sysadm and operational experience and much less with Linux. I also don't mind paying for mature systems management products.
So I'm tempted to replace the couple of LAMPs I'm running with WIMPs/WAMPS.
With regards replacing mySQL with SQL I was hoping it could be done by just installing the a compatible ODBC/JDBC. Oh well.
Guess I will just have to build a server core install and give it a try.
