I came back to the game after a long absence to check out whats new.
My life does not afford me 2-8 hours in a single session to play an MMORPG very often.. I usually get plenty of 30 minute opportunities to play MMORPGs.. and I have had fun w/ several.
I was hoping that there was something in this game for a player who only has about 30-40 mins.. with an occasional moment when he can play longer. This really works out to needing a 'solo' game for those times.. since in that timespan and with the speed of travel not much can be accomplished in a group.
Am I correct that there is no solo game in EVE.. that really the only time you can play the game and effectively accomplish anything is if you can grab more than 2 hours at a time?
I just lost my Vargur (0.6B) running a Lvl4 NPC mission to a couple players who warped in and took me out with ease since I was engaged fighting NPCs. I made a *major* newbish mistake not realizing that 'deadspace' was *not* a protected enviornment for a solo player who only has a little time to play and can't form a group of 3 to take on a mission.
So, I just wanted to see if I could get any advice before I cancel my account again.. just in case there really is something out there (like all other MMORPGs) that I could do in 30-45 minute chunks.
I would like to re-iterate, I do have occasion to play 2-8 hour segments.. and I like playing with other players.. but this comes only once or twice a month.. and it's not worth it to me to only be able to play a game once or twice a month. I would like to be able to accomplish *something* significant when logged in for short periods.
Thanks-

Mining/Manufacturing Trade
That's pretty much all. Mining/Manufacturing isn't the best money maker, but it's soloable and somewhat fun to create things and sell em, knowing people will use it for all sorts of exciting things! Trade is profitable too, and the more time you spent in there just means more profit :P. ---sig---

If you want shorter sessions, play another game. Eve Online shouldn't compromise to cater to the more casual gamer.

Sure you can do it, you can do anything in EVE. But even an average level 4 mission can take 40 minutes easy. If you really do only have 30 minutes to play, I suggest maybe an RTS or FPS game.
You aren't going to accomplish anything significant in a short amount of time. Even in WoW you can't do that. --

Speaking as a solo player of the last 5-6 months, missions are a good choice for it. The trick is to do them in highsec, not low/nil. The pay is marginally better in lowsec, but the limited time/attention makes highsec ultimately more rewarding.
I find a good mix of market trading, industry, and mission running related skills allows me to log on in short bursts and do whatever I have the time/attention to accommodate - while avoiding the monomania burnout of just doing one thing over and over and over. ----------------

I guess you're the rawmodel they made FW for. There's no such thing as commitment join up when you can in what you can and leave when you want to.
As for losing the ship while in highsec it has to be a pretty darn planned op and you would have to have some decent modules on that boat for it to even be worth it. And that's just two things, if you overpimp your ship you increase the risk explonantially for little gain in reward, if you go to lowsec with no clue you greatly increase risk for little reward, while you can get great rewards for nearly no risk extra if you are careful and know what you're doing. Parrots, commence!

Unfortunately for you, EVE is very much designed around group play, not solo. It's not helpful for those with limited time, but it never really claimed otherwise.
With your time you really only have missions or trading/manufacturing available. Even then though, some missions can take longer than that.
Essentially though, most things that people consider "significant" aren't available to solo players in general, although that is a matter of opinion.
My opinion really is that EVE just fails completely to offer people like you much to do, and it isn't really all that sorry about it. It's just not that kind of game unfortunately. It takes great pride (or certainly used to) in not being like all the other MMORPGs.

I know. That's what I'm clarifying, as the OP sounded like he previously thought deadspace was like an instance. ----------------

Having pretty much the time and scale of the op id say don't give up.
I wouldn't listen to others telling you that you're time and presence within the game will be a fruitless expierence given how they precieve eve to be, we all play in different way and manner, whats in my eyes or indeed there's certainly won't spell it out to yourself on how you see things.
As far as the ingame stuff goes, 2 maybe 3 things are beyond the grasp of a solo guy (certainly with a single account) The rest is pretty much posible, i know iv'e been there and done it myself. Easy to make 10's of billions over time just by running missions (those ones that take no more than an hour) Dance around in any contested 0.0 space as you like (easier with alt's, but not essential) Run POS structures, 30 mins a day is more than enough to clear it out on a smaller scale, or should i say every other day. As others have said, trades, the buys the sells ect.
Saying all that though, it's understandable realy that you'll never be an overlord of 0.0 space or anything, unless somebody realy takes a shine to you ofcourse.
just remember, everything is whatever you decide to make of it

Thank you. Yes, that was precisely the way I was thinking of deadspace. As an 'instance' that allowed some form of protected PVE. Since I was running a Lvl4 mission, the system was in 0.4. (as you dont get to choose)
Just to clarify: as I understand it, if you are in below 0.5 space.. no matter *what* you are doing.. you would *never* equip for PVE.. as you can always be attacked at any minute without any warning and lose tremendous amounts of investment. Correct?
Thanks for the responses, I understand.. and it was precisely what I was afraid of. I *love* the universe of Eve for it's size and complexity.. I really wish there was some way I could play it casually.
Can anyone recommend anything close to Eve in terms of universe size/scale and game complexity? I'm a huge fan of the genre.

Not being a fanboy - but there isn't. There honestly isn't much at all in the way of sandbox MMOs right now, much less space-themed ones.
But if you're not heartset on giving up Eve - there are L4 agents (more than likely some already available to you) in highsec too. Have a look over here.
In highsec, while players can warp in to try and take loot or salvage off you - they can't attack without concord retribution. Which means they almost never do unless you load your ship down with lots of shiny expensiveness to offset their ship loss cost. ----------------

Thanks for the more optimistic tone.. it could come down to flying a gimped ship all the time so there's no risk. I'm really trying to think of any angle I can still enjoy. I can't thrive on mining and industry unfortunately. :(

You can't choose exactly where your mission is ran from, but you can choose where to get your missions from and by doing that, you'll only get missions in the surrounding areas (so you can avoid losec completely).
Try level 3 missions perhaps? They're fairly easy to burn through in less than half an hour.
As to your last question about suggestions of other games? No. I haven't found anything else similar in scope yet. Meanwhile, on the other side of town . . . |

My agents are in high sec space, but they seem to always randomly throw me into neighboring sub 0.5 systems which I assumed comes with the level. Is there any way to curb that? If there is no low sec space even close maybe?

Honestly, if your lost ship weighed in at 600m between the ship and fittings both - you'll be quite reasonably safe in highsec with the same fitting.
I'd say "completely safe" - but this is eve, and someone would gank you at a big loss to themselves just to prove me wrong :p ----------------

Yep. As long as there's no lowsec within 4 or so jumps, you'll stay in highsec. I personally have two different L4 agents I fly for and have never ever been sent into lowsec on a mission. ----------------

Doesn't have to be gimped, just cheap
Take me, i have the 3 billion isk fitted navy raven, when the easy ganks became obvious to people and it became the flavour of the month to blow up folks with those expensive mods, 10 minute read on the forum solved the problem.
Swap the nv for a golem, you can rig and fit it to be as effective tanking/ganking wise with stack 2 stuff or cheap faction, unless somebody just wants to ruin your day at their expense, chances of losing it to other players are near zero, unless war dec'd ofcourse
As said though, 95% of it isn't imposable, alot of it is 10 times easier with time and a group for sure

Btw, you can try the opposite - something I intend to try.
Find the cheapest ship you can take into losec for ratting purposes. Can you do it in an omen? Of course. How about a slasher? Not sure. What about a rifter?
Just tossing things out there, but you get the idea. See how good of a pilot you can be in a cheap piece of junk. Even if someone comes to take you on, you're just out a cheap piece of junk.

I wouldn't say that. It's simply a case of being alert and aware. Plenty of people do manage to run mission successfully in low sec space. It's a case of watching local and keeping your scanner open and checking to see if anyone is warping to you at any point in time so you can escape if possible. It's not the most relaxing gameplay though and you probably will get caught out eventually.
