Okay was looking at the stats on a the gatling pulse laser II and looking at Gleam S and Amarr Navy Multifreq. And I don't see why anyone would buy gleam s. If you run missions, if you pvp, you can afford the amarr navy multifreq. The gleam s has ridiculous penalties and not much gain....
Am I looking at this the wrong way or?

Gleam probably has one of the nastier T2 ammo penalties. Scorch is probably the most widely used T2 crystal although the high amount of EM damage vs Thermal that it does makes it less effective against armor tankers and basically useless against Minmatar AFs and HACs.
The highest damage faction ammo for all weapon types usually approaches or just surpasses the DPS from the highest damage T2 ammo and carries none of the penalties, so if faction sounds better than T2 it's because in most situations it is. I'd never use it for anything other than PvP though, due to price.

I'm thinking the only reason to go t2 would be to get the 10% bonus for the laser specialization skill, and use faction ammo.
At least for the gatling pulse lasers that I'm using...

Once you get up to the large turrets, t2 crystals get a good deal more use. Aurora is extremely common on sniper ships, and scorch is used with pulse gank setups

The crystals can also be used in PVE. Scorch in particular is amazing for running missions with your Apocalypse. Two reasons: it allows you to use high-DPS pulse lasers instead of beams and still melt rats a long range; and the high ratio of EM to thermal damage really vaporizes Blood, Sansha, and rogue drone rats like nothing. When I had a T1 fit megabeam apoc I used Amarr Navy ammo, now that I have a T2 pulse fit, I use AN for close ranges and Scorch for long ranges.
It may be noted that the navy ammo lasts much longer than the T2. .............

You have to be careful, though, because ammo expenses can really start cutting into your profits if you're using T2 or faction crystals in PvE. ----------

Small T2 Pulses with scorchs rock on frig's, destroyers and even crusiers for L1 and L2 missions. But you have to get close in the L2's as most rats will out range you with this setup. On the other hand, one-shot-pop on 99% of frigs, 2-shot volley on tin cans.

Edited by: Jei''son Bladesmith on 02/01/2009 21:18:37 generally speaking the T2 sniper ammos are good, since the only penalty is usually tracking, and at sniper ranges tracking is less of an issue anyways, but the T2 brawler ammos are outclassed by faction ammo, which often does nearly the same damage, but without any penalties (other than cost of course)
remember that originally faction ammo was difficult to come by in any quantity, so T2 ammo had a major advantage, but thanks to LP stores and profiteers like myself its now common and in many cases cost effective, and have made T2 brawler ammo all but obsolete in most areas.

Not if you're running level 4 missions for serious money. The ammo is more than paid for by the increased speed at which you complete missions. I believe the average lifetime of a T2 crystal is 1,000 shots, and of a faction crystal is 3,000 or 4,000. When firing frigate or cruiser weapons you can burn through Scorch pretty quickly, but since battleships have a slower rate of fire and do more damage with each shot, you can make it last. .............
