ok I ma due to be buying anew car sometime this year, along with my lovely elsie I need something a little more sensible...
Choices so far, BMW M sport 318d / 318i.....Audi A4 speedline, or Mercedes C220 'sport'
the only important thing is my partner can only drive automatics, and I dont want super uber engines or anything like that, hence the BMW 318 over 320 etc Must have 4/5 door and seat 4 adults or 5 passengers including children...

despite you're preference of the 318, I'd recommend you get the 2500cc model of this car or its 2000 turbo sister. It's a Subaru, they are built well and rarely break down unless you seriously, seriously abuse it. Plus Subaru is very well known for their sturdy engines. The Legacy B4 combines that with an eloquent look and a fantastically stable chassis, and it comprises nearly 60% of Israel's police force vehicles.
The legacy's Chassis is one of the best I've seen, and I've driven BMW's and Mercedes before. Mercedes isn't comfortable at all, and BMWs guzzle a ****ton more fuel.
5 star safety, Solid on the road, and packs a punch if needs be. I hope to get the 3000 model someday personally :)
If you don't like this car, i'll second the Audi vote :}

could do worse than the A3 Sportback / A4 with a diesel engine and the DSG gearbox. S-line trim is worth having too. |

To hell with new cars, buy a second-hand Peugeot 205. Those things are basically the Firefly class of small cars - may look like crap, but if you have a mechanic with a functioning brain, they'll keep it running forever.
Mine's almost as old as I am, and the only problems with it are the rear windscreen, where the heating filaments have given up, and so has the motor on the rear wiper. Everything else is cosmetic - a couple of old dents and bashes that we knocked back into shape, the front fender's duct taped to hold it up, some of the decorative flashing at the back's gone, it could do with being reupholstered...
But the engine's fine. 1.4 liters in a body that maybe weighs six to seven hundred pounds. The power-to-weight ratio is... surprising. Being small and old and cheap, the insurance premiums on it are really easy to afford, and there's lots of parts for them out there - most of them have been scrapped over the years, so there's no shortage of salvaged spares for the ones left on the roads.
Of course, if you can't live without those little luxuries such as central locking, antilock brakes, an automatic gearbox or airbags, this probably won't be the car for you. Given how high they ride, they're a bit prone to rolling, too.
I love mine, though. -

Believe it or not, that's actually a family car. can't remember the name of it though. The autogear is maybe a little longshot.... and the pricetrag is a little issue...

meh so far seems the Audi is the favourite, the scooby legacey just doesnt cut it for me, would rather go with the WTC car... forget its name...
A couple of you say go cheap and second hand, I love the smell and feel of a barnd new car..
I need a car that is practical and you look good in it, that lambo looks nice, but as some may already know I already have a car (lotus elise) for fun and track days, as shown in the other post, I did with my alt, titled 'yay finally round race track' or something similar..
Problem I find with most cars is, you may like the look of it in pictures but when you see one in the flesh it can feel very different, and on that respect the audi wins so far, but I have yet to go to a showroom about the Merc..
Save the world? be environmental? see my other post coming soon(tm) titled 'why should I be enviromental'

I would say the FCX Clarity, but there aren't any kind of infrastructures to deal with it, yet .
as for something sensible, either an Accord (prolly thos DTEC or the i-CDTi), or even a Laguna.
Go for diesel engines aswell. might cost a bit more to get the car, but fuel is cheaper, and it doesn't consume as much as a gasoline one. ---

That article is a parody. He starts by pointing out the global economic meltdown that will leave everyone impoverished and then goes on to rave about a 2.8 litre beast that's just an overpowered, overpriced gas guzzler.

If you think 2.8 liter engines are beastly, that's kinda scary. that's a "small" engine by American standards

But when fuel prices are over a pound a litre ($1.40 or so by todays exchange rate, equivalent to $7 per gallon), anything that does less than 30 MPG is only for the rich who can afford to run it. I've heard of the American 12MPG 7 litre lumps but your gas prices allow for it, ours don't.
