hello,
i try to start eve behind a firewall by using ssh. using putty on windows allows me to play eve without problems. now i want to use my mac client also. by using this help:
http://oldforums.eveonline.com/?a=topic&threadID=640671
i was able to connect to my ssh server. but the guide want me to chnage the server name from tranquility to localhost. (In the HOST box, remove TRANQUILITY, and replace it with the word localhost.) does anyone knows how to do this? where is this host box? or is there an other known way to change the server to localhost to use ssh tunnel?
thanks alot.

The EVE server can be connected to on any port; is the firewall simply blocking the usual ports, or is it doing deep packet inspection and allowing what it thinks is SSH while blocking other things (i.e. EVE)?
Anyhow, as to your specific problem, the client originally had a Host field on the login screen, but this was removed for simplicity and to keep people from accidentally trashing their clients by logging in to Sisi. For the Mac client, you need to edit Prefs.ini to change the server. If you read the Sisi guide and replace the bit for Sisi's IP with your own settings, I would think you would be able to make it work. ---- FREE Explorer Lead Megalomanic EVE Null-Sec Player Influence Map http://dl1.eve-files.com/media/corp/Veritefw/FWinf |

thx for help!
it would be great to connect to eve server without using ssh. but i do not know anythink about the firewall. i try to change the port in the prefs.ini from 26000 to 22/80/110, but my client always fail connecting.
i can use my browser (link now) and also email behind the firewall.
are you sure the eve client is able to connect on any port? or is there an other option to change the ports?
thx again.

I can't imagine EVE would be playable via SSH. It's great for streaming audio or using external email systems and websites and reaching your own systems on a locked down network (for example, I use SSH and SOCKS to reach my colo and home systems from within the network at work on the rare occasion I visit the campus).
And, short of using SSH to encrypt and obfuscate your traffic, there's no way to avoid being clamped down on from your network administrators (presuming you're playing on someone else's network at the office or a university or something).
Of course, I have no actually done this with *eve* so I am largely taking out my ass. -- What's your EVE New Year's Resolution for 2009? |

you have to build up a ssh tunnel to an server. at this server he decrypt the information and send it to the right adress. i have no problems to do this if useing windows and putty.
so the question is not if it is possible :) the question is only how to configurate my mac, cause i dont want to start always bootcamp to play eve.
anyone knows about?

Edited by: Verite Rendition on 07/01/2009 11:26:08 I'm pretty sure it supports all ports, but I could be wrong. The only thing I could find was this document which explicitly mentions port 3724. So I guess you can try that, although somehow I doubt it will work. ---- FREE Explorer Lead Megalomanic EVE Null-Sec Player Influence Map http://dl1.eve-files.com/media/corp/Veritefw/FWinf |

I've never played a game through an SSH connection, but I can't imagine it would be playable due to the need to encrypt the entire connection. Not saying it wouldn't work, but I'd be surprised if it had anything near playable performance.
As far as changing what host you are connecting to, that's not possible through the EVE interface, as was mentioned above. I would instead suggest that you try editing your /etc/hosts file so that if you connect to whatever hostname or IP Tranquility is on, it will connect to localhost/127.0.0.1 instead. That should accomplish the exact same thing.
If that doesn't work and your SSH server supports SOCKS, I would look into using connect.c (that's what I use for all of my SSH tunneling, but you'll most likely need to compile and install it yourself). Another alternative would be to google for running World of Warcraft over an SSH tunnel and there should be some good tutorials on it. I believe that MacOSXHints has one from a couple years ago that involves tsocks (via MacPorts). Essentially, anything that would work with World of Warcraft would work with EVE, because they both use the same port.
Still, I would try editing your /etc/hosts file. All that should need to be done is to have connects for tranquility re-routed to localhost so it can go through the configured SSH tunnel. If you can't directly tell the EVE client to do that, then just do it through /etc/hosts for (presumably) the same result.
I have no idea off hand what the fully qualified domain name or IP is for Tranquility is, but that shouldn't be hard to find out. -- What's your EVE New Year's Resolution for 2009? |

The biggest issue with SSH tunnels is the additional latency from using them since your connection is being routed to an additional point first. This certainly makes things like first person shooters unplayable since they are extremely latency-sensitive, but EVE is not latency sensitive - it has to be playable from locations far away from London such as Australia. People have done EVE over SSH before and it works. It's not by any means ideal and I would probably shy away from small fleet fights when using a tunnel, but it certainly works.
And really there's no difference in overhead between SSH and SOCKS, it's trivial to encrypt the 5KB/sec (or less) of traffic EVE normally generates. |

Edited by: Azrel on 11/01/2009 03:27:35 I've been using OpenVPN an SSL based VPN to tunnel EVE on for a while. The OpenVPN end point is on a server I have at an ISP. The eve machine then VPNs out to the server, the config of the VPN pushes down a route to force all traffic over the VPN, you can force just EVE server traffic too if you know the right IP addresses to set the route for. I've found it pretty reliable and it doesn't increase the latency that much.
If the VPN is configured to use port 443 normally used for HTTPS then 99.9% of of Firewalls, Proxies, etc will just pass it through without trouble and without any filtering. |
