Hi all, I have been reading the laptop suggestions and recommendations so far in the threads, and have come to one conclusion..... I just canÆt afford that..! Everyone seems to be looking at the "Uber pooters", so on that basis I would like to look at alternatives. With the credit crunch I would like to make my pounds go further and am looking for a cheaper laptop with a basic spec. My one requirement is that it can run the ôEVE classicö client, not bothered about the premium and I wonÆt be playing any other games on it. I have a desktop which runs EVE fine, but IÆm looking for a ôlivingroom laptopö. Does anyone have any spec suggestions? Or web offers you have seen recently? IÆm UK based so your thoughts / comments would be appreciated. Thanks in advance...

I'm using this: http://global.acer.com/products/notebook/tm7720.htm
Inexpensive, WinXP, good bang for buck, runs EVE premium well enough for me (40fps-ish methinks)
edit: oh just classic, would prolly do very nicely on that.
some downsides to this particular one: -bulky (17", but since you mention living room... meh) -gets rather warm -silly battery life (2hrs all set low, 45mins playing EVE on wifi/bluetooth with cell) -----

The problem you are running into is that even the cheapest PC that can properly run Eve Classic is bound to be expensive when compared against a Desktop PC. This is because while Desktop PC components are essentially "commodity" products (IE: standardized, mass-produced, easy to make with little unique about them). Laptops, OTOH, are still considered "boutique" items and are priced accordingly.
So even a low-end laptop is going to be pricey when compared on a spec-by-spec basis with a comparable PC. If you want a gaming laptop, even a low-end one, be prepared to spend some serious money. At a minimum you are going to be around the $1000.00 US mark, if not quite a bit more. And at that price point you will be able to run EVE Classic in just-above-slideshow mode.
You would be better off spending the money on upgrades for your gaming PC, and then just pick up an EEE PC for general surfing. (Although you CAN run the Eve Classic client on an EEE PC, it's a station-only experience. Good for changing skills or market stuff, but not much else).
Good luck! Tactical Logistics using the last T1 Frigate hull!

Edited by: Buxaroo on 05/01/2009 19:17:43 Acer Aspire 6930-6560 with NVIDIA 9600GS (512mb) with 16" screen, 4 gigs DDR, 320 gig HD, HDMI output
Only $749 with free shipping (and no tax I might add). I am receiving mine either today or tomorrow. I will tell you how it holds up when I get my paws on it.
I am in the same boat as you, I got my desktop which is my gaming rig (8800GT on a 22" monitor and running Far Cry 2 at ultra settings with great FPS and not to mention EVE in fleet fights ), but I also want something to go in the living room when I just want to chill and hook it up to my HDTV.

The problem with spending that "right around $1000" amount ($700 - $1300) is that for the same money, you could either significantly enhance a reasonably current Desktop rig, or do a full upgrade. For that amount I could basically build a new machine, including a brand new Intel i7 multi-core processor, and a top-flight Nvidia video card. (Assuming I re-use a few parts, such as hard drive(s), power supply, case, etc.)
Then I would have a top-end machine to work with rather than a watered down (and ultimately disappointing) laptop.
Now, if you already HAVE the latest and greatest desktop for gaming, then why not invest that money into a multi-monitor or big-honkin' monitor setup? Or just a better HDTV? Or ACTUALLY invest it in a retirement fund or college fund, carving out a small portion for a netbook for general surfing.
Trust me, trying to play a game like EVE from a couch is not really possible, don't waste your money on a laptop trying to do it. Tactical Logistics using the last T1 Frigate hull!

I have an Asus 1000H. I didn't buy it to play Eve but it's all I got at the moment as I'm away from home, it runs the classic client just fine.
Obviously, with such a small screen tight oversettings are a must, and in mission / plex sites I usually zoom all the way out to get a decent framerate, but it's cheap and gets the job done, which seems to be what you want. Buy a 2GB SoDIMM stick to go with it, will help performance tremendously, still only costs about $500 when all is said and done.

Dirt cheap (550$). Should run classic EVE satisfactory, but it's not much to look at. I would probably recommend the one Buxaroo spotted first instead. No precise idea why it's at a whooping 200$ reduction (from 950$ to 750$) on newegg right now (well, I have an idea, but don't know for sure).

Well I am hoping that the reported crappy build quality of the 9600 series won't be an issue with mine . I didn't find out about the issues with 9600 cards (supposedly some of the materials going into making them wasn't great quality and some of the components are rumored to die out) until 3 hours after ordering the laptop. It should be arriving around noon though so **** it, it's only money

Wow, thanks for all your replies, guys !
I very much appreciate all the linkies too. I was looking to spend around 300 Stirling, which curerently sits at about 450 USD, however your right about the laptop being a luxury item, and i suppose i do have my Gaming rig for my study. Ill have a look at the linkies, as I now have a good idea what minimum spec will run EVE classic I will start from there.
Many Thanks guys, o/ |

If you look at the specs of the Dell the OP said he bought then it's not important that Classis is dead in 3 weeks to him...
it has a radeon 3450 in it so supports a high enough SM to support both Lite and full Premium. ===================================== It smells of spoon! ===================================== |
