Warrior IIs, Hobgoblin IIs and Hammerhead IIs.
Why only these?
Why not hornets and vespas?

Hobgoblins and Hammerheads have the highest damage multiplier, and with good drone skills it overpowers most damage resistances of targets better than the target-specific drones (i.e. the 1.92x base damage multiplier of a Hobby II, when you factor in the advanced damage drone skills, is better than (or on par with) at taking down a soft kinetic target than a similarly skilled Hornet II (1.74x base damage multiplier) which puts out kinetic damage). For the difference, it's much more convenient for people to just carry thermal drones then, and still get the max damage in most situations.

Warrior II = fastest drone.
Hobgoblin II and Hammerhead II = highest damage mod in their category.
Personnaly, for missions, I use all four races of drones, picking the "right ones" for the mission I'm doing (yes, against some NPCs with very high THERM resists, using Hobs/Hammers is NOT a good idea). <~ sig starts here

to add to the first response warriors are there because they are the fastest and will chase off ceptors and the like with decent drone skills. ~ The man who smiles when things go wrong has thought of someone to blame it on. |

Edited by: Tchelor on 05/01/2009 20:38:22 Another note, resistances usually seem to go:
EM - Therm - Kin - Exp
So Hob/Hammer usually have the hardest time with Exp resistance, and since Exp drones also have the highest speed, they are used. In PVE, it's rare that EM drones will outdamage thermal, and the same is true, though to a lesser extent, Kinetic drones. This all changes with Sentries and Heavies, but that's off topic

EM drones force the people who make dictionaries to redefine the term "suck". Even against the NPCs who are weakest to EM, Thermal drones do -vastly- more damage.
Thermal - Rogue Drones, Amarr Navy, Sansha, Blood Raiders, Mercenaries.
Kinetic - EOMs, Guristas, Serpentis, Caldari Navy, Mordu's, The Seven
Explosive - Angels, Thukkers, Minmatar Navy
EM - Reprocess.
I'm not sure where Gallente Navy fall in that list. I've never shot at them :)
Just don't fall into the THERMAL THERMAL THERMAL trap. Yes, thermal drones have the highest damage modifier, but they're also (by a wide margin) the slowest drone type. Between focusing on a better resist, and your drones spending a lot less time flying between targets (during which time their damage is...somewhat poor), it is easy to beat Thermals by using different drones.
The other types also have the virtue of being cheaper, since so many sheep fall into the THERMAL THERMAL THERMAL trap, and it inflates demand and price.

I have to disagree. Why hornet IIs and Vespas IIs then? Well first they are faster then hobgoblins (they are second fastest) which helps in different ways and they have the most shields which oviously helps too.
Being fast they get to the targets early and apply damage plus if getting aggroed it is much more difficult for npc to take them down, this is where the better shield tank comes into play too. Plus Serpentis and Gursitas (plus the npc from "gone berserk") have kinetic weakness and Angels have Kinetic as second weakness. I should also note that hornets, vespas and wasps have the second highest damage multiplier. Granted the higher damage multiplier on therm drones more or less evens this out but they still are slower and tank less good.
On a side note someone said warriors are good to chase of intys, this only applies to players what works best vs npc are heavy drones. This might sound funny but if you try it out and have a look you can see why: Scout drones orbit around or worse zipp around with the mwd on while heavy drones follow the target since they are too slow thus having a far lower relative transversal often insta popping frigs. (You might need decent drone navi skills for this to work, I have them and it works like a charm)

I just use Vespas and Hornets as I can't be a$$ed to skill up another races drones much, I got other irons in the fire. They arent the absolute min/max best in some situations but who cares. I can't recall a single time where Warriors over Hornets (for instance) woulda saved me or got me a kill over the other. The Caldari ships I fly (most of them) drones are just...incidental. It's hard to get excited or worry much about dps drones when everything you fly has a miniscule or non-existent drone bay. *shrugs*

Sentry drones are an exception though.
Dmg mod on normal (t2) drones: Therm/Kin/Exp/EM 1.92/1.74/1.56/1.38
Dmg mod on (t2) sentries: Therm/Exp/EM/Kin 1.92/1.68/1.56/1.44
The better dmg mod on the Curator coupled with much better optimal and fall-off make it a viable choice.
And if you're not lazy, switch to Kin/Exp drones on the appropriate targets, you will do more damage.

Have you looked at the tracking speed on light drones. ...but on a serious note, more people should have some type of spacer in their sigs to show it's not part of the post.

It's not just Warrior II's, Hobgoblin II's, and Hammerhead II's. It's also Ogre II's and Vespa EC-600's.
