As a very new player to the game (1 month old) I have really enjoyed learning the different ships and colours. I have also thought to myself how cool it would look if each players ship carried their corps emblem/insignia on them in some way. I am very interested in hearing what other pilots think about this.

Would be nice, but would have to be toggle-able, so the many eve players that participate in larger battles don't have to load 50-odd corp emblems and apply them to the correct ships in a large fleet fight. |

From my experience of other, very similar suggestions in the past, I can let you know that:
- Some players think it's a cool idea, and would like to have it.
- Some players (usually older, grumpier players) think that it's a stupid idea and that anyone suggesting it is an idiot. This is usually because...
- CCP mutter pessimistically about it being a bad idea because of the extra server load and bandwidth required for customisation. Imagine a large fleet fight where a couple of hundred customised ships suddenly jump in. It's bad enough as it is at the moment.
There are a few other views that differ slightly from this, but they're usually from the terminally deranged, trolls, or both. Personally, I'd imagine that 70% of the customisation would involve red and black ships with skulls on, 20% pink ships with attempts at obscene logos, and 10% of any actual merit. |

I think you mis-understand sir. I mean't as a spray paint job when you buy your ship... your emblem will be generic to whatever ship you fly and would be purely cosmetic, but funky nonetheless :D Like the rings on an RAF fighter or the star on a USAF jet |

Still, loading 500 ships, 200 of which have been "Sprayed" in this method adds just more lag to an already laggy situation |

I struggle to see how putting a little logo on a ship is going to create any lag at all to be fair. To me it seems simple. you are Viziam the has a small viziam logo on it. If you are The scope the ship has a small scope logo on it. How much lag can a small badge on an already complex design make?

cause when 200 of us jump in on 200 more, thats 400 different calls to 400 different users asking the database what symbols are on the ships. Don't get me wrong, I love the idea, but I love the lower levels of lag were having right now, and anything that takes away from that can pretty much go screw itself |

Actually I was thinking about this, it would be cool if you could paint your ship, add logos/paintings (like the old WWII planes had), and other flare to it.
However make it client side only, because that is really where it matters. The rest of the time people are colored brackets 90% of the time. If people want to share their designs let use screen shots. |

i dont see why ccp would not implement this in future, if they can get that infiniband or what the hell was it to work in eve.
imo it would be very nice addition to game.

The "complex design" is a bunch of polygons and textures, stored locally on your machine, that your graphics card could render in its sleep.
The logo, on the other hand, has to be downloaded if it's not in your local cache. Which means that every time you see a ship that belongs to a corp you haven't seen recently, you have to download that corp's logo. Admittedly, that's not a lot of data because of the way corp logos are made, but it all adds up.
Your machine also has to render the logo (appropriately mapped onto the ship textures) if it's visible and not hidden by LOD. Given that CCP have been adding options to remove graphical stuff (turret animations, drones, warp shake) from the client in the name of reducing lag, adding extra rendering load is probably not where they want to be going.
I doubt if it would cause huge lag, really, but given that we don't know a huge amount about how the client actually handles these things, how can we tell? If I had a nice, sturdy goat for every time someone naively said to me "Can we just put that information in there as well, surely it's a simple query to get it out of the database?" without understanding how insanely bad an idea it was then, well, let's just say I wouldn't need any more goats. |

Ally Logos where already implemented. They stoped them before golive because the implementation was flawed (needed a flat surface and as such the size was limited on some ship types). CCP reimplements it currently and they consider a projection map to be able to put it into apropriate size on every ship type.
Full customisation of colors will not come.
Reason: Think about pink spaceships flying around and destroying the flair of eve.
CCPs issue to not introduce colorful ships are not a technical / lag issue.

I don't see why other games can load leagions of customized characters into a single area with little to no problems at all.
I don't see how the server adding a 6 or 9 digit (hex of RGB) color code when it tells you to load what ever ship is supposed to be there would make for increased lag. Especially not in the amounts you people are envisioning it anyways.
1) Ships you're fighting aren't usually up in your face. At least not all 500 of them are. So the only 'paint job' loaded most of the time would be your own. You'd never see the others unless they're in a range that you can actually SEE their ship as more than just a black speck.
2) When they're in range the only extra information the server sends is some numbers. Something like '... drake[584,525,584]' telling the client to load the drake model and tint it in what ever color [584,525,584] is in RGB. If those extra 9 digits makes you lag, then there's something wrong on your end.
3) It could be made even simpler. CCP can have 'decals' for each ship. Giving the ship custom paintjobs like sharks teeth, flames, etc. Again the only time those on other ships would actually load are when you can actually SEE them. Instead of a 9 digit code you'd have a number between 1 and 3 digits (depending on how many they make) at again tells the client to load the numbered decal for that specific ship. All ships might have the same ones, but they'd just have to be shaped a little differently in order to wrap properly on the ship.
We're 2009 here. All this talk of tinting an object a certain color or overlaying a decal causing too much lag is ridiculous. We have have live streaming video conversations with people all over the world, We can guide a missile to a target from a bunker or ship thousands of kilometers away, but I can't color my little ship purple because it would be too much of a strain? Puhlease! Again it's 2009 not 1989.
If EVE is already laggy, then what's CCP waiting to fix it for? I've been playing the game on and off for about 2 years now. Every time I come back people are still saying things can't be done because the game is already laggy as it is, and I know that people have been complaining about it since before I started playing too. I can't be the only one that thinks there's something wrong with that picture, can I?

Flair of eve? what flair? As i see it, every ship thats the same type looks exactly the same, is that the flair you mean?
Tbqh, i dont see a issue with this at all, infact i would love it.
For the 200-600 player fleet issue, just make it so the logo's are not loaded if your zoomed out past a pre-set distance.
