o/ Alright all..
I Just read this about the new expansion for EVE-O, and some parts of it struck me.
Press release.
Mainly the part describing, it being available in retail stores.
" Availability:
EVE Online: Apocrypha will be available at retail stores across the galaxy in March this year and as a free download at www.eveonline.com/download/ for existing subscribers. A new Premium graphics client for Mac will also be included in the retail box."
I read back along that EVE-O was planning to hit the retail market, but it's the second part of that statement that worries me, the bit about the free download for existing subscribers..
Could this be a hint that CCP plan to turn EVE-O into the same type of product as WOW, by this i mean, you will need to pay for future updates? [I know that this update is free, but I can't see how they can sell it in retail stores after this update, whilst still providing free updates in the future for existing users, why would you buy it in-store when you could just sign up a month or so before the update is released and get it for free due to being an 'existing customer'..]
It just strikes me as the initial stage to switch from 'free updates' to 'pay for updates'..
[Especially with CCP's recent antics regarding ghost training/pos bug etc etc.. and their ambitious plans for the future - ambulation, which no doubt has cost them a lot].
Does this strike anyone else? Or am i just being an old sceptical b@stard?

You don't have to pay for it. It's available online for free -- the expansion, the mac client, everything.
What part of this do people fail to understand? How many times does a CCP rep have to come to the forums to correct people about this before it sinks in?

I'm trying to figure out how CCP could make people pay for updates the way Blizzard does, though. Skillbooks you can only acquire through buying a code (which is kinda RMT-y)? Stopping SP gain unless you buy it? That'd be exceedingly lame.

I don't just think, I KNOW you got something wrong! Let me give you a hand:
it's not the update thats going to land on the store shelves it's a retail version of EVE simply including the up to date update, with by that time will be Apocrypha.

If you are not a subscriber, you will be able to buy the latest expansion (The entire client for Apocryphia) from the retail box...
IF you are stupid, you will be able to buy future expansions in the retail store, but that would be DAMN stupid as they are going to be online for free.
The retail box is just for people who want to collect the boxes cause they like them or not-yet-a-subscribers, so they dont need to download and they dont have an account yet.

I just hope that "Apocrypha" will not end up on the retail box.. I know all the expansions get mythical or biblical references, but this sounds like one of those weird Korean MMO's really...

Panic over nothing? Eve-Online has been sold retail in a box in the past. When you first sign up to eve you pay a one sign up fee, this one of fee will most likely be waved for people using a CD key from a boxed version.

i wasn't talking about this current update, just the ones to come in the future after that. I may have just been being sceptical, but i there is just cause to do so.
[look back at when they changed the 30//60d GTC because it was 'too complicated' now you have a higher priced 60d gtc, with a more-so complicated plex item, than the original method.. not to mention that its more of an isk sink also now.

good point. I was trying to think how they could sell it as a retail version, but you have pointed that out clearly.

The word is absolutely stomach churningly evil! I know the empires are in chaos with all out war, but doesn't that word mean mini-apocalypse? Or local disaster. Maybe I'm getting confused, I have only just woken up after all so I need a second cup of coffee quite soon.
Oh well on with the slaughter, can't wait to read more about it.
