I'm not in the forces myself, but I've met plenty of people in EVE who are, and some who are crazy enough to play on dodgy connections from wherever it is they are. So you're definitely not alone. |

Edited by: Nova Fox on 08/01/2009 17:34:15 Most cases where not allowed to 'download' and 'play games' on most goverment non-mwr computers.
But I've been in your situation before and it mostly sucks, I only manage to log on log enough to change skills and play a little market and keeping those windows looks like Im doing legit work of some sort. Not sure how Army rules are different when it comes to computers but over a sat com connection you're mostly screwed, 3 second lag isnt very forgiging in eve. I do play eve from a thumbdrive once in a while but can't at the dedicated work consoles, so far Ive been lucky not to get nailed by a expansion during deployments in the middle of the ocean where there is very little internet.
Tonns of navy people I know do play because of similarities in warfare use of intel and logistics and long range support and 360 degree warfare. |

Out of context there Skunk. When hes refering to in support of hes refering to the fact that his current line of work actaully effects the events in the operation. Where as my line of work supports happenings of carrier operations west of califronia coastline and then some or some poor high sec miners are currently supporting operation bob overlord even though they hate bob to the guts supplying those tonns of trit. In other words its more of being a 'structrual' support than a 'positional' support.

Ask any Vehicle Operator, EOD, or Security Forces from the Chair Force what he does for deployments, you'd be surprised.
VO-GunTrucks and LineHaul for convoys throughout Iraq and Afganistan. EOD-Explosive Ordinance Disposal throughout IQ/AF(Dispose of IEDs and such), SF-Secure bases, prisons, and go on patrols with the Army. |

Only thing chair force boys get the sailors dont is all the fancy toys, we still have to disarm bombs the old fashioned way, in person. Chairforce got that nice new xbox360 controllered robot to do it at a distance for them. They also overspecialize on aircraft maintenace, its sorta unfair because I cant go airforce because Im 'over qualified.' |

When I was in Iraq the chair force didn't even carry weapons, well some of the pilots did, but the general chair force ranger had their brand new M4's, fully pimped with all the add-ons a soldier could want, locked up in an arms room near their barracks. Was funny when we would go to their defac and would get saluted, we were Spec 4, and sometimes get asked,"Do you have to carry your weapon everywhere?" No we're only over here fighting a war, we just carry it to look cool...
I was ****ed though when I bought my brand new toshiba laptop from the extortion service, AAFES, only to open the box and realize they sent me the wrong model... Onboard video with no shader models, and you know how long it takes to get mail now consider getting mail, sending it back, and then waiting... and waiting ... and waiting... and.. well you get the point. I just had them do a charge back for the difference instead and now have a POS laptop.
It did play StarCraft though so it wasn't a total loss. |

When we were doing Guntruck from '03 to '07 we kept our M4s the entire time. Now that my career field is doing regular linehaul we keep all our weapons in the armory. Makes it easy on us since we don't NEED the weapons unless we actually go on a mission. |

Hey, if this thread is real then Thanks and GG to all.
I'm a civilian nub,29 years old,and cant really find anything civilian that interests me for very long. I was wondering if you see many guys my age just joining your branch of the military or not?
I'm kind of wondering how weird it might be at this age as opposed to having gone in if i was 18.
also any chance of letting us know what your typical day is like? I think the idea of a complete disconnect to the rest of the world or at least my world seems to have been an issue with me in some way.

Great question!
Now, I'm not sure if things have changed, but in the AF the age limit is 27, HOWEVER, when I went through basic training we had a guy in my flight that was 29. They gave him a waiver on the age limit because of his scoring on the ASVAB test and other qualifications he might have had. So it's possible at least for the AF. Not too sure on other services.
For the second bit, it really depends on your careerfield. So many are so different, each jobspace can have a completely different mindset compared to the rest. Just make sure if you join, don't go in as a cop, unless you want to be a cop. I did Augmentee duty for 2 months...it wasn't pretty checking ID's or guarding the flightline 12 hours a day...

Edited by: Nova Fox on 08/01/2009 22:28:12 Depends on the branch the more desperate they are the more wavierable (little peice of paper that ingors something) you become. Im sure the army is taking alot of people but branches like the airforce may be very stingey with waivers due to thier overcrowding.
Service can be life changing for some, for the better I've known a former homeless guy in massive debt turning his entire life around to owning a home and getting married having a family he can support. For the worse some idiots get kicked out and screwed over with dishonarable discharge (a pernament smear mark worse than jailtime on your records when back out in civie world, good luck finding work with anyone that doesnt have a goverement contract)
If you take up a technical job you can earn tonns of qualifications easily worth far more outside the military with very few out of pocket expenses. Secret Clearance for example is like 90,000.00 to get done in civillian world. Navy has a very hard time keeping thier nukes in service dispite one of the largest re-enlistment bonuses and throttled promotions because outside companies want to buy these skill set people.
Program managagers and program coordinators like Six Sigma or LEAN programs are steaming hot jobs in this time of economic crisis because these are the 'save my business' sorta people the military been training for years now and any smart business out there already employs these people trying to save money in every possible way. |

There's quite a few of them around, several ex- corp/alliancemates that been stationed here and there while playing.
Don't hope too much to avoid anti-war comments, after all it's pretty serious business, you can't avoid people hating war, for several reasons.
Either way; one great thing with EVE, having a global server and the possibility to play this on dial-up (albeit not ideal) makes for an interesting multiculture environment. Awsome ****. |

Military takes people who are able to follow orders and read and understand how things work. Spelling isnt a big thing in the military thanks to computers and airforce programs with built in spellcheckers or select this option. They only get annoyed if you dont use 'proper' wording though on several documents.

Thanks for answering ! I remember hearing that a few branches raised their age limits up over the past few years. Which I'm glad because I let some RL issues get in the way so I'm going to work on getting in the right shape for things.
I have some friends in the military and they did well enough on the test to get decent jobs. They all suggest that I'd own it once i get around to it. So im not to worried about that.
Again thanks for the answers! Also wtf is with the nub owning himself trying to point out mistakes of the OP? Talk about fail.
