Originally by: Gnulpie Sorry to say, but space is DARK.
Only from Earth's vantage point, and other similar locations where there are no stellar nurseries.
EVE space is filled with nebulae, and nebulae can be very vibrant, though generally they are reddish or blueish (in part due to the doppler effect); but then so are most of EVE's nebulae.
However it wouldn't hurt to be able to install different filters in your camera drones in order to... dampen the color a bit. |

Seriously enough with space soup. It's not realistic and not even aesthetically appealing.

And yet, after a month of just black space, with a few pinpoints of lights, no one will get bored of that also?
The point is, we'll get bored of anything they put out, so just leave it colorful so we can see our cool ships we bought or made. Because if it is all black, you ain't seeing ****.

This thread certainly does deliver. Thx Devs.
You've made me very excitable all of a sudden now.
As it sounds like you're redoing space and planets exactly how I wanted it, I would've been a bit disapointed if it didn't use an accurate background per system view to what angle and what distance it showed stellar bodies.
I didn't think for a second you were actually working on making it happen though.

One thing that I always thought was missing from EVE was a visual presence of the landmarks identified on the map.
Imagine looking into the stars and noticing the likes of The Cauldron, Pool of Radiance, Ginnungigap, Black Rise, or even the EVE Gate.
When the background rendering finally makes its appearance in game I hope that these landmarks are a prime feature. In fact CCP, please add more! EVE really needs a greater sense of presence when you are flying about the star systems.

Yeh jeez you guys need to lay off the artists a bit, they must feel like **** now.
I dont mind the background so much though i think it is to common and should be very limited so they are mor interesting cos you would not see them as often.
I would like to see that eve map in real time as star that would be a neet feature. If you were to go as far as that, you could put a couple of big 3D nebulars in the eve map so that you could get different views from them or even use that as a guide as to what part of the map you are in.
But the first feature i think should be address is realistic sized plants. If they were real size i couldn't give the **** about anything else that would really make it feel more real.
Oh and you hae made me so excited about this new features i just want to leave work now and go and play

A couple of years ago you could see the EVE stars in space as you were in a system. It was pretty cool when you switched from map view to space view and you could watch the stars pan out from the map into space around you. I wish they would bring that back, was uber. -------------------------------------------- Glory to the State and Tibus Heth.

Might I suggest just killing many of the nebula backdrops for the time now?
I mean having been looking at the same clouds that just change color depending on the system you are in for the past four years has made me a little tired of them. Sure they where great in the beginning but now after all these years I woudl love to see them in only a few locations and the rest to simply have a black backdrop with a few stars, planets and moons nothing else.
The mining upgrade the belts etc. CCP you have been talking about this from before the beta testing started. I know about backlog and priorities etc, but some times even though it is not the cool new thing, it would be good to also work on the old systems and improve existing systems. Mining has been brought up as being to borring since at least the first fanfest and has always gotten the same anwser. I like the anwser but so far you have not ever shown us anything that even remotely resembled the things you claim to have been thinking about for so may years now.
I stll like EVE but I am getting a little alergic to certain DEV replies about mining and the ideas they claim to have for it. |

I did not know that you decide for me and others which options we enable or not. Just so you know, not everyone is involved in fleetbattles diashow. I for my part do small gang pvp and have all eyecandy activated. That means brackets on, sound on and ofc all effects on and it rocks.
I would not have a problem if CCP just made an option so you can turn off the nebulas. I would not use it anyway because i cant imagine that i will be pleased to see only dark background. What i find more important is that we get finally bigger planets ,moons and better sounds for the blasters for example.

Point of no Return is a small black hole located not far from empire space. The black hole is rather old and was formed by a sun only just large enough to create a black hole when it collapsed. One interesting fact about it is that itĘs located more or less exactly in the center of the known world, if you only count those systems that have been linked with star gates.
Ginnungagap is a huge black hole at the edge of Minmatar space. It is the largest black hole close to civilized space. The black hole has already rendered several solar systems close to it uninhabitable, but otherwise it is not considered to pose any great risk to inhabited space for the foreseeable future. The black hole can be seen very clearly in the Konora system, located very close to it.
Winding through the Syndicate region is a natural phenomenon that has baffled scientists for centuries. The phenomenon, a super-dense dark cloud, bends time in such a way that all space-travel in or close to the phenomenon is impossible, or at least extremely hazardous. Most scientists believe that the Cord is the remnant of collision between two black holes millions of years ago that permanently 'scarred' space. Others belief the Cord to be the result of a science experiment, possibly conducted by alien life forms, that went seriously awry eons ago.
/if /i don't see these ins pace I will cry, just to make sure you know.
or remove them from the backstory, one of the other.

Are you flying zoomed in? I imagine that the artists are do, they are checking the looks of their ships.. But I'm sure most of us, playing the same way as devs. The backgrounds are taking 95% of the screen, the pilots playing 90% of the time zoomed out. But even if we zoom in, the background is still take around 50% of the screen. How is it more important to revamp the NOS,Web,etc. effects than the main visual impact that most of us have?
I just wonder how did you came to the conclusion that effects are more important than backrounds.

I agree. Turrets and effects are of relatively minor importance since, a. most people have them switched of and b. most people play zoomed out to the extent that they are barely or not visible.
Surely the backgrounds and planets take precedence. In fact I was sure they would be the first to be revamped - before the ships even - with trinity.
As to the "colour" of space, those backgrounds currently used are photoshopped images from hubble - actual nebula (some are from the eagle nebula - look for the "bok" globules) so space does actually look like that in places. but it wouldnt look like that UP CLOSE.
Heres why:
The tiny cluster of stars which make up the eve "universe" could well exist inside a nebula - thus as far as the backstory goes it looks "real" - however nebulae would look FAAAAAAAR fainter and greyer viewed from inside, than depicted in eve - since with a hubble photo, we are looking at the accumulated light of the entire nebula, rather than just the small portion you would see from inside. Also the colour concentration is built up by long exposure rather than luminescence. The human eye would see a faint fog with some filaments of dull colour against a background of stars.

A lot of good points have been raised here and I would like to add some more. -planets: please, please, please allow us to orbit planets so we can see them up closer and then they may not look like oversized moons but important celestial objects that they are. (giving the game a better sense of proportion) -X3: take this game as an example. the visuals are similiar to eve in terms of ships, stations ect. but the planets and background are spectacular. I know that you wil want to make new, exciting, brilliant graphics when you update them but if you could just do something similiar to x3 within the next 1-2 expansions I, and many other players, would be thrilled. It adds so much being able to see inhabited planets properly and imagine the people below, it would make you feel like the background and lives of the billions of normal people down below were part of the game, rather than a completely seperate element far too rarely talked about in-game. Finally, can we know some of cpp's thoughts on the whole 'redone planets' thing, if one of the devs could tell us of a few of the ideas from the mighty thinktank of ccp that would be beyond awesome!

:( I was just trying to add something to this, it may not be very good but I have no one else to vent this stuf to, and hey, maybe cpp will listen. I was looking forward to new planets with a passion and now I hear they are not coming in this expansion. I am sorry for voicing similiar opinions to those of some other people and adding clutter to these forums. Plus, call me delusional, but I really would like some feedback from the devs about their opinions on this discussion.

Edited by: Niara Takeva on 17/02/2009 21:45:19 the x3 system is not comparable to EVE The planets in x3 only look so big because of the small systems and the low speed of the ships or do you want weapons ranges of 500m to max 4km?
the only things id like to see are the already mentioned landmarks and more random NPCs, Agents in Space and so on...some totaly random PvE Stuff

Interesting thread
I'd model the eve-verse based on a large central nebula sprialing outwards with increasing amounts of emptyspace. The different empires could even have the colours most assoiciated with them,
Minmatar~rust~brown Amarr~regious phallic symbol~gold, Caldari~show me the isk~blue Gallente~STD~green
Places of interest on map atm could stay to add more scope, ie a system on the edge of a nebula part would have a sheer wall of dust matter in the one direction.
From what I've read in this thread a nebula like that would keep New players happy for a while then once bored of the colours head to lower sec sytems.
just my 2 pennies worth
P.S minmatar would also have more patches of emty space than the other factions

Please make an OPTION to turn off nebulas so I can see that deep black space. Seeing all those stupid colors in space really breaks the deep space feeling of the game. Looks like I'm floating through a sea of cotton candy.
