Anyone remember Galactic Empires? (old BBS txt based door of spaceships?)
Planets claim SOV, not moons.
Planets can be populated with Fighters (mechanical warriors), Troops (human fighters), and Workers. They produce any number of items right there on the planet, ie. food for themselves, ammunition for ur alliance, more Fighters/Workers..etc..etc All upto the alliance how much of the workforce is dedicated to each one. SOV is taken by planetary invasion of troops and fighters aboard freighters, jump freighters, carriers, even titans i spose. Actual population of the planet is not shown, and u would need to plant spys on the planet to get information about the planet. (Number of fighters, troops, defenses, etc..etc..) All this would be balanced by a population limit on the planets, along with the weight of fighters/troops in a ship, shouldnt really be able to grab a few JFs and take sov in a system. Maybe even a giant ass shield emmiter as a PoS module that protects the planet from invasion until disabled? /shrugs
Moons are still mined, and moons would be where u place ur planetary defenses for each planet. (PoSs are still used and still important) Cyno jammers, JBs, all that good stuff would still be here of course also.
And to go with all this? Remove local, not completely. Give stations some kind of upgrade (System Scan Array works fine) and only shows the local to the faction or alliance who owns the system. Ur caldari in a galente system? Too bad for ya. Your in hostile 0.0? Sucks to be you. But the caldaris in a caldari system knows who there. Likewise the alliance who holds sov in a station system would know whos there. (could possible even make it standings based? 5.0+ standing with the system owners get access to the scanner?) And keep the local chat too, thats always fun =]
The only CON i see with this is making dreads relatively useless unless ur trying to take a high end moon from someone. But i suppose PoS bashing will still have to take place as u dont want a hostile PoS in ur system.

dead on man, not saying I agreee with your ideas on how to change it, just saying this statement is correct :P
Why would anyone care if the USAs many many islands were taken over, it's still the USA.
or if someone invaded the moon, who would care here on earth? it's not like taking the earths moon someone gives those people ownership over the planet earth.
I've never understood the idea of moons being more important than planets. |

it just not about claiming sov it about battling it off someone else and then getting it back which is the problem plus to poor bugger that have to fuel towers ....... ooo and that also doesnt encourage blobbing but also some how allows you to have border patrol. and somewhere to store corpses aswell, and decorate your own station in WIS, that would be totally killer. a uniform would also be nice. and championship matches on that table game inside :)
anything else i should add :) |

let planets send out NPC hualers that other players can shoot at. These NPC haulers refuel your poses for you automatically. By shooting them your standings are automatically lowered to that alliance.
stuff like that. |

Remove all the shiny graphics and guess what you have? A great big spreadsheet/database driven text game. Srsly. Think about it. 99% of the game is played via the overview and chat windows (you can use the in-space icons to perform actions, but that ultimately boils down to just being an alternative to using the overview).

Text based games are some of the best I've played... roguelikes, MUD's, RPG's... Hell, MUD's were like, the precursor to MMO's.

Regardless of you attempting to turn EVE into C&C, Civilizations style game to determine sov, I STRONGLY disagree with this point.
Roaming as it is now is near useless, BECAUSE the inhabitants rely on local for constant intel, and its breaking the roaming part of the game.
What your proposing COMPLETELY removes any tools the attackers have and puts EVERYTHING in the hands of the defenders. Thats a broken system, and would pretty much kill off small roaming in 0.0, when combined with local standings recognition.
Total non support for anything like this, other than your want to change sov mechanics. |

That's funny, after reading a lengthy review about Eve, it sounded amazingly similar to the origianl text based version of Trade Wars. Loved that game.
This was actually the main reason I signed up.
OP is heading in the right direction if you ask me.

Those were the days! You, Mr. Jones, won the forum today. Again.
@OP: I like the idea of claiming sov by 'being there'. So that any number of factors play into sov as long as a corp or alliance show some kind of presence in a claimable system. Planets could be a part of that. But as the MM guy already mentioned: Ideas forum?
