I have introduced a couple of friends into Eve and they have started playing. I am helping them as much as I can but have also printed off lots of articles etc from places like this for them.
Is there a quick ref guide for the symbols used (the crosses and boxes)on the overview to indicate ship types/classes (both rats and players) that I can grab and print or get them to print.

You could always do it yourself, pop down to Jita, warp to 4-4, screenshot and print 
Though have to say, even i can't remember 'em all and still check most of ships as "is that a cwuisew ow a mothewship?"

Although I do not know of a quick reference sheet, which would be an excellent addition to the tutorial, I do know of a simple way to identify ships:
Change settings as above in Overview Settings.
Hover the mouse cursor over a player ship or NPC to see the ship type.

I've been playing for several years and I have no fricking idea really, apart from "if it has a big fat icon it's prolly a big fat ship". Best you can do is at the 'type' column to the overview and do it like that.

Looks like I am not the only one that has not found a crib sheet anywhere for this then

icons are useless to identify ships, as Tzar'rim said - make sure they enable the "type" column instead.
