How do you know it was inappropriate? Maybe this guy was experiencing something "like" boredom, but which was not boredom. Maybe there is no word for what he was experiencing in English.
That moment after you have been very, very busy for days and have had little sleep, when all of a sudden you can stop and sit still. You have nothing that absolutely has to be done and you know that you can go to sleep soon, which you need to do, but you cannot quite yet let go of your intense focus.
That is "like" boredom, but isn't.
