Regarding the todays dev blog, a severe question popped to my head. Just when they got the classic client to work somewhat on mac, they are going to shut it? The dev blog is thorough on the effects on Windows, but what about the Macs? esspalin pleez |

The Premium Lite client referred to will have several more options to reduce client quality down to the point where a machine that is currently able to run the Classic client well can handle the Trinity 2 engine. We're currently waiting on a code drop from our core graphics team and once that's ready it will be going to Transgaming for evaluation and testing to make sure the Mac clients will work. |

This is my worry. That looks like Mac Eve client days are numbered. I have no idea what graphics card runs in an Imac lepoard.
And the answer didn't quite understand that: Except for 'maybe'.

Try this thread for more info.
It all depends on your graphics card, really, and it's easy to find out using the Mac menu -> "About..." -> "More..." (Sorry got a german Leopad here, no idea what the original menu entries are called).
The problem is still that CCP has to rely on Transgaming to keep things from crashing. |

Assuming you didn't buy your iMac at a school auction you should be OK. The lowest video card that the iMac came with standard was the Radeon X1600 in 2006. Later iterations have even better cards, so I wouldn't worry about it too much.
If you really want to make sure: Go to the Apple Menu and select "About this Mac" (should be the FIRST option) Once there, click on the "More Info" button, should be near the bottom of the window. Now a new window will pop up, select "Graphics/Displays" in the left-hand menu under "Hardware". Some Technical specs will appear. As long as you don't see "GMA950" anywhere, you shouldn't have a problem running Premium Lite. |

At a certain point, you have to EOL stuff. You can't continue to provide the resources on something just to keep legacy people happy. That's why your grandmother eventually has to upgrade from Windows 95 if she wants to run something current with active support from a company.
In this case, they want to focus their attention on a more unified client (meaning the premium content) rather than two versions of each client across three operating systems.
Will some people be unable to run the new stuff at all? Perhaps. Probably a smaller subset though. But at some point, you have to move on. Even if it requires a small investment.
Not to mention, they aren't killing it off immediately. You'll have awhile. |

sounds more like in March they're switching to the trinity 2 engine and completely phasing out the classic client. This is actually really good as performance wise the premium client is much better, as it properly takes advantage of the graphics card's processor power instead of trying to use the CPU for everything. Obviously for some people this sucks but overall it is a step in the right direction.

Apple [the thingy in the top-left corner] > About this Mac > More info = more information than you ever thought you'd want to know about your system. Can be saved, contains logs, very fancy stuff.
Discontinued support should not be much of a drama if it does not mean that it is disabled outright. If that is the case and your computer cannot upgrade the graphics board, that will be an issue. If the client is allowed to connect to the server you will still be able to play, it will only mean that when you report client-specific problems you're going to run into a canned KFO informing you that your client is no longer supported.
We can only applaud a client implementation that uses core system technologies. This should greatly improve the client's performance. The interface, and here I hesitate with the trepidation of walking up to a bear cub and slapping it in the head where its mother can see it, might even look like it was designed in -this- millennium instead of looking like a 1960s Comp Sci major's project.
I'm absolutely looking forward to it.

They just dropped Linux support, so watch out. If TransGaming is as incompetent with Mac as they are with Linux, you might end up loosing support too :(

Unlike with Linux, mainline WINE blows on the Mac, so CCP can't fall back to that. I wouldn't be too worried at the moment. ---- FREE Explorer Lead Megalomanic EVE Null-Sec Player Influence Map http://dl1.eve-files.com/media/corp/Veritefw/FWinf |

Not too worried personally. That dev blog specifically states that usage of the mac client is increasing, whereas the linux static was pretty static, hence dropping the support.
Besides, us Mac guys can use vmware/parallels if we have to.

There are currently no plans to drop the Mac client. There is a large and growing Mac user base and we hope to get more Mac users from the launch of Apocrypha and Premium graphics.

The mac client is awful. I blame cider myself.
I run the windows classic graphical client in crossover games and it runs just fine. Been running the game like this for a month now and only had one freeze up. What the hell happend to the mac client, it's completely broken, so badly done that i nearly unsubbed. However all those happy memories came flooding back, yeah, i can't quit. I'm jusyt gonna keep running the win client under crossover game for now untill the prem lite comes out for mac. lets face it guys, it asin't ever gona be native and will probably never evr work like it did when we first started playng EVE. shame really!! |

Well as i'm sure CCP knows, and as i know other users know - The graphics are awesome to look at, however almost no matter what computer your on, from the Duel core duel graphics cards, to the crappy cards, 99% of PvPers will lower those graphics as much as possible :) So i hope that whatever comes out will have plenty of options to actually lower graphics - Because when it comes down to the nitty gritty of a PvP fight graphics don't matter
