what it looks to me like is the kid was using the whole "halo 3 made me insane" argument as a copout to get out of going to prison -_- |

Probebly this. Put the attention/anger and point it toward game manufacturers instead of himself. |

Maybe the father gave him a gun himself.. There was a darwin's award given to a dude who gave a knife to his son and dared him to stab him |

In the MSN version the gun was locked in a safe but the kid snagged the key |

I would hardly consider a 17 year-old "Children".
Then again I guess I'm sorta biased. Growing up in the middle of Nowhere Arkansas, I've been around guns my whole life. I was probably 5 or 6 when I shot my first .22 (Of course I wasn't holding it by myself, pretty much Dad kneeling down and holding it while I stand between his arms and pull the trigger. But freaking awesome for a 6 year old!)
Guns are perfectly safe around competent and non-stupid people.

That wasn't a fight, he WENT INTO THEIR ROOM and killed/tried to kill them. Doesn't sound like insanity to me...
That's ******ed.
Also, putting the game and the gun in the same box probably not a good idea. __________________________________

From the last article I read about this the kid got the gun, went into the living room where his parents were watching TV and said something to the effect of "Mom, Dad, close your eyes I have a surprise for you" *bang* *bang* (Not exact wording but close enough)
That's just messed up. |

Not a good idea, but if it's the only lockable box you have, how many options do you have? |

What's worse, is that in the article I read, the dad forgave his son.
Sure, maybe it was bad parenting, maybe the dad blames himself.
But at that age? Loony bin/jail, please! |

His parents took away his game, so he plotted over several weeks to kill them. You know, I think you might be on to something here... |

Videogames, the new boogeyman, to scare the elderly with. It's a good thing for rock music, they're finally off the hook.
I get serious Gomer Pyle vibes here, he's probably best off being put down. |

I started shooting when I was 8, any given time in my parents house there were at least 3 or 4 loaded guns within easy reach for me. And not by accident. Yet... nothing ever happened. Maybe because I was taught right from wrong and how and when to use a weapon. When mad at my parents, the thought of acting out violently never even crossed my mind, I learned at an early age that weapons are not tools of anger. Also I'm not bat**** crazy.
Seems more logical to me that it's the (lack of) parenting these days that's to blame, I saw a cartoon the other day which had a picture of a Thomson SMG and the caption read "Before 1945 any teenage boy could order this gun my mail. Number of school shootings recorded before 1945: ZERO." Or something to that effect anyway, google images is failing me completely.
At the risk of digressing completely, as long as guns are taboo and universally feared (and the vast majority of people are disarmed), they will be the ultimate trump card. This crazy crap was practically unheard of 50 years ago when guns were much more commonplace and accepted in society.
In conclusion, don't be afraid to give your kids a swift backhand when they step out of line. |

Remember that Brandon Crisp kid who disappeared and his parents blamed it on his COD4 addiction and some dude from the internet must have lured him away, but turned out he went outside to play and fell from a tree? That was a good one.
If I had to choose between Halo and lack of access to psychiatric care causing the incident in the OP, I'd side with the latter. |
