Edited by: Idara on 27/07/2004 12:41:45 I curerntly have an Armageddon and Apocalypse Battleship, and I'm starting to mine for another one. It's either Megathron, Scorp, or Raven.
I REALLY like the Raven's ability to fill space with missiles, but I'm wondering how well it fairs against NPC's. Are the missile costs too high to justify using it as a Rat Hunter? If so, how good is the Megathron at the same job?
Basically I'm looking for experiences on the Raven and Megathron (Scorp too I guess) and how each of them fair in a Rat Hunting capacity...
And skills wise, I can use Cruise Missiles, not Torps (yet), and I have all the Gunnery stuff trained to L4.

Edited by: ponieus on 27/07/2004 12:53:32 To NPC hunt I would use a Dom. Simply because of the drones and the fact its cheap to make and replace...BUt given the choices you have it would have to be the Mega

I curretnly use a mega for NPC hunting, and there's nothing it can't do in that field.
On the other hand, I'm gettig my ass in a Raven too, and I'll use that for NPCing as well. The Raven can combine tanking and damage better imo. The Mega just looses too much in damage when tanking up.
I'll prolly use my Mega for long range NPCing, going the easy way with that uber ranged damage it does.
I'll be using the Raven for closer range NPCing as well as some pvp later on.

Is the Blasterthron setup viable for NPC stuff? Shouldn't I be remaining at distance to avoid getting ganked like a bastard?
Also, does the Raven's missile cost basically shoot it down as a good NPC'er, profit wise?

I cant really vouch for raven, even though im saving up for it, but i find the caracal to be the best caldari npc killing cruiser. You can easily make back the cost of your missile purchase from one or two 0.1 level rats, and im sure something similiar would apply when killing bs spawns on 0.0 space.

I liked my Raven for NPC. Only drawback was the cost of missiles but if you kept killing just spawns with battleships it worked out decently.
I loved my Dominix too. You may laugh at that, but with 6 medium neutrons, a load of drones and tanked like no tomorrow it worked wonders untill I got sloppy and failed to notice I had 3 BS against me where off 1 was a 3m commander.
Megathron, I love that too, tough I am not npcing much atm due to the war. For that you can tank and go with 6/7 electrons instead. -------------------------

If you bother to pick up the cruiser/frigate loot with the BS spawns, then killing NPC's in a Raven isn't a big deal.
Missiles, while expensive aren't THAT expensive, especially if you have corpmates or friends shop around and buy them in bulk.
Or have a buddy build them for you. or build them yourself, for that matter.
The only way you are going to make pure profit, is to mount beams. But then again, I'd rather lob missiles from 100+k.

Edited by: Lentia on 27/07/2004 19:01:11 Idara, I fly and use both. Both are good.
I switched to a Raven for hunting bloods as they were mainly susceptible to em and hybrids do only therm/kin. Plus I was having serious tracking/dmg issues since last patch. It became much easier and cost effective to just spam paradise cruise missles and kill everything, including the frigates and cruisers. I couldnt touch the mwd cruisers with the 425's. The drones handles the frigs fine. Plus I could seriously Armor tank the raven and use 6 rechargers to keep the armor going. 3 bs spawns in a raven are np. Missles skills for Raven NPC hunting- 500k are fine.
However if you wanna be risky, try a blasterthron setup. I will never do that again as I lost one to a CTD/frozen mods and it was kitted out with all named stuff and tch 2 stuff, plus 10 drones which are hard to replace in deep deep space. Of course CCP said "Haha, too bad".
The only viable option with Megatrhon is the super long range setup which is 7x425, 2 sensor booster, 2 tch2 track comp, 3 dmg mods, 2-3 track enhancer, no armor, no shield, just start bombing away at 150 km with irridium. You need bookmarks at 200km from all the belts. This is quite boring but safe and effecive. Weaponry skills for Mega NPC- 1.5M-2M is probably where you need to be.
Why dont you just plop on 8 Mega-pulses, armor tank and go to town in a geddon? That is the ship of the moment. YOu could have a miner-geddon, and a pulse-geddon ready to go at all times!

I like the Megathron for Rat hunting... although my skills aren't uber, I hold my own against most Cruiser Level missions. This is my Combat Mission setup.
Megathron High Slots 2x (L)Tachyon Lasers with Radio Crystals (For 65k+ hits) 2x (L)Mega with Radio for the same reason 2x (M)Heavy Pulse Lasers (Also carry Multifrequency or Gamma Crystals to swap to to increase the damage as the Rats close on you) 1x Assault Missile Launcher (Loaded with Defenders) 1x Siege Missile Launcher (Loaded with Inferno Torpedos for the Moa and Caracals)
Mid Slots: AGM Recharger Large Cap Battery Large Shield Booster Large Shield Extender
Low Slots: 1x Tracking Enhancer 2x Overdrive Modules Fill the rest with the Best Capacitor Recharger Mods you can get (Big Lasers Love Energy).
Drone bay 6 Ogres and 4 Wasp... (I like a Mix... Speed and Damage) A mix seems to confuse the Rats... but Don't launch Drones until you can no longer consistently deal damage... usually under 10k on Frigate Classes.
The hardest Opponent that I've faced over and over is the Dread Gusitas Mortifer (550,000 ISK Bounty)... an MWD equipped Moa. For Him I engage at Max Range with Tachyon Lasers and Torpedos (and start firing the Defenders, they love to use missiles), then Kill his Escorts with the Mega and pulse lasers, switching Crystals as necessary. Once targets break the 10k range I cease firing the Torpedos and release the drones to Finish off the rest.
Hope that this helps.

Lasers on a Mega!!! Maybe for empire but dont try that in deep space, you will get owned in a minute, no cap, no damage, no tanking, no life.

Both the geddon and the apoc make great npc hunters and they don't require any ammo to do so. I don't know why you'd switch to another ship. Ravens can handle npc's just fine, but why dig into your profits by having to supply all those torps/cruise missles?
Ravens and scorps are best used for PvP. A megathron makes a good miner/npc killer, but I don't see you getting any advantages over an apoc or a geddon.

Profit Margin... With the laser setup I don't have to carry loads of Hydrid Ammo... I carry 120 Defenders 60 in the laucher, 60 in the hold 45 Torpedos 15 in the Launcher and 30 in the Hold and my Crystals... If I were out for Mass Damage I would use the 425mm Hybrids with a Combo of Neutron Blasters... but the main question was basically about Profitability...
That is what I use to boost my profit margin
