They are ice belts, just like asteroid belts, and there's one in every five or six systems, even in highsec. If you get an eve map (google Ombey's map for example) the ice belts are flagged with a little symbol on the map. .............

Gotta find a system with an ice belt. Most of them are low sec but there's a few high sec systems too. Tolle and Niarja come to mind immediately as high sec ice belts but there's more than just those two.
But unless you're doing this to fuel a POS or something I'd avoid ice mining. It doesn't tend to be as profitable as asteroid mining.

Ok, thanks! I just got my 1st Mining Barge and saw the Ice Harvesting bonus so I was gonna give it a chance.

Is your first barge an Exhumer then, or are you referring to the bonus that allows you merely fit the ice harvesting module?
But again, if you aren't acquiring fuel I'd stick to mining asteroids.

There are some highsec ice belts like in deninard and Map Wuos, but seriously ice mining is so dull.

Ice harvesting in a Mackinaw or Hulk, in the "Classic" client is a great screensaver to use while doing ironing :)
The premium client isn't quite as pretty or relaxing when ice harvesting.
Does anyone actually harvest ice for profit, or are we better off mining veldspar and buying ice with the profit?

Veldspar is the better option. But I found Ice mining very useful when I was planning my next day's course work, back when I was teaching, since I could read and plan for 7 minutes, then take a bit of time to move it to the hauler. It's not much, but it's infinitely better than 0 ISK/hour.

When I did it we didn't have Hulks. But we did have ice belts in 0.9 systems.

Dude,
1 word - Kiskoken...
Of course, your gonna have to dodge player 'rats (I won't elevate them by calling the Pirates) on the way in and out. But once you get there, lots of Ice and minerals.
It's where I started, and makes a good Homestead until you are ready to move on.
Regards,
