This is my current environment on my windows boot: EVE Theme I change background from times to times with snapshot I take while playing.
LiteStep replaces the uses for Explorer as a window manager (does not uninstall Explorer, you can still use it), takes less ressources, overall faster than explorer as an interface.
Lots of modules, skin/themes as much as you like.
Just my two cents. Have fun! :)
And the badge of win is awarded to.... that guy!

In the future every application could have its own custom operating system running under it. With hypervisors you could have as many OSes running simultaneously as you wanted to ^__^

Now could you please send me SIMPLE way to put that on my ocmputer because that is just...just...own
*nods* Must be done with admin rights/runas (follow your knowledge) 1- Get those DLL packages from Microsoft: (auto-install, just execute while downloading) --VC8 (2005) SP1 DLLs --VC9 (2008) DLLs 2- Download the installer and execute it. == Make sure, when you see files association, that the SLI Theme Manager is associated with compressed theme format (just a box to check, among 4-5 lines. Easy to spot) Do not change any other options, but for your softwares (editor, notepad?). You can change all that later on. 3- Visit the theme page I provided 4- If you installed LiteStep previously without touching anything, the compressed theme should be assiciated with the installer, so when clicking the download link you should be given the option to Execute it. Do so. 5- Once the Theme Manager install the theme, it will ask if you want to recycle the Litestep, again do so. 6- Right-click on the desktop, in the menu select: -LiteStep > Change Themes > EVE Online. While applying, Theme Manager will tell you you miss some modules, click download. (short downloads, takes usually 2mins) 7- Once it's applied, Theme Manager will ask if it did apply correctly. Et voila!
Just change the backlground, and notice the CCP (c) that will still apply on the lower right part.. nice touch eh? :)
I'm glad if others discover LiteStep this way, I been using this for a a long time now (back in my win98 days...). I am in no way linked with the maker of this theme btw, just using it :)
I modded it a bit at home for button sizes got 1600x1200 display, but the rest is easy guessable with a little digging.
I can always help if asked for further help. Have fun! :) |

Wow...what an excellent idea. I could see how to do it too. Too bad EVE lacks a native Linux client though, not sure if what I'm thinking of could be done in Windows. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- PROPOSAL: Chaos Incarnate's Face MMORPG: Many Men Online Role Playing Girls |

Actually, this could already be done with Linux.
Install Ubuntu (for example) and setup a special runlevel choice (3, or 4 should be available on Ubuntu). Configure that runlevel to simply launch the Windows EVE client using Wine, with a plain busybox shell in the background.
So all you have to do is boot the machine and when you get to the login box select your custom runlevel from the menu at the bottom and log in. Once in EVE will automatically launch. When done simply exit EVE and type "logout" at the busybox prompt to get back to the login screen.
That's a rather bare overview, but it should be doable. Tactical Logistics using the last T1 Frigate hull!

In my opinion, future MMOs are going to have to integrate better with operating systems in recognition of the fact that most people multitask and do not play fullscreen. They wanna be able to use IM, browse and get work done at the same time. MMOs are part game, part hobby, part distraction and part virtual world. Which one depends on how far the player is willing to immerse or disconnect themselves.
If it doesn't happen now, it'll have to happen once console MMOs get off the ground - maybe not this console generation but definitely the next.
One path assumes our current OS won't change to facilitate this:
Allow EVE to run processes from within the ingame window management UI. So when you launch the browser icon it could be Firefox, Opera, or whatever. It also eliminates the need to keep supporting an incredibly lame integrated browser, and avoid any legal issues at the same time. Other apps that players might want: MSN, IRC with windows that can be stacked onto others ingame. The ability to write custom EVE web tools with the API and add them to your corp management screen or character sheet could also extend gameplay and provide a level of customization.
The other scenario is that OS will change to better allow MMOs to integrate themselves as virtual themes for the desktop:
Allow EVE to run as your desktop background, in a quasi-fullscreen mode. The OS UI would still be visible, but it would hover above and can be hidden - ie, the entire OS becomes an overlay similar to Steam or Games for Windows. Therefore, 'peeking' at your desktop in Windows 7 for instance would have a gameplay purpose. Integrated MMOs would also specify system wide visuals and behavior. This obviously, doesn't work with current OS which are fairly static and not very customizable. We're not talking themes here but the actual shape and characteristics of the OS UI.
Anyways, just some thoughts.

Heres a even better idea, CCP should make a forum for ppl with features and ideas and name that forum "features in ideas". tldr; Good idea, wrong forum.

Almost all games written for Amiga, Atari ST, Commodore 64 ect, had thier own OS. On the Amiga most games were basically a floppy boot disk that bypassed the Amiga windows system (it was called workbench). But it was easier to do it for these computers because the video and audio was designed to be standardised across the range of models.
It would be interesting to see how much faster games could run with a custom OS. Someone could write an OS that is optimised for gaming and does'nt have all the overhead that a generic OS like Windows adds to your PC.
Is anyone still awake after reading this?

Hmm I am not sure what you mean by this question.
It is either: A You need to apply the EVE theme to LiteStep so you get the Extra Icons bar, menus etc.. B This theme was made in December 2007, so the Extra Icons (FW etc..) were probably not available at this time, and were not added since. C For someone who knows his ways around LS, Extra Icons are easily added/replaced/modified. If I could get those I could add them myself (and notify the one who made the theme).
So there you go, pick the answer(s) that pleases you . Be more specific if I did not answer it right.
In fact all configuration are in plain text files, a little reading and you can make/tweak any themes you like.
If you want to have a try, just take the steps I posted earlier in the thread for Sheriff.
At this point, I am rather surprised Piezo, guy who made the theme, did not reply in the thread. Not sure if this is the name of his character in-game tho.

Originally by: Nikita Alterana Imagine this, instead of starting an eve client to play eve, you turn off your computer, and restart it in a custom EVE OS. The OS would be a hyperadvanced version of the client with support for easily creating apps like Evemon for it. The existing client would be built into the OS, so you could, basically, be playing eve from the desktop. just an idea though, I would pay for an advanced, upgradable, customizable version of the eve client to run as its own OS.
Welcome to 1976, friend.
That's the way games USED to be played, with custom boot sectors and the whole nine yards. 'Course, back then it was somewhat easier to do such a thing SINCE EVRY SYSTEM WAS JUST ABOUT THE FREAKIN' SAME, SO NO COMPATABILITY ISSUES, but I digress.
If you had a setup that differen in ANY WAY from the "norm", to get the program to run you had to wait (wor write yourself - in assembly, natch) a patch to allow the program to wrok with your nonstandard hardware.. That was back when a OS was just that - a OPERATING SYSTEM - and not the multiheaded hydra that Windows is today.
TO SUM UP: STUPID idea given today's hardware, nothing to see here, idiot wants to revert us to the 1970s ways of doing things. Move along.

Get linix, then customize it to run EVE in the background when you boot up. Would take some Programming knowledge to do though. |

Except that now we are entering a time where we use multiple OS on each PC. virtualization is here and it is good. And it makes sense to keep Eve on a separate OS with CCPs record of making windows unbootable
I tried to get eve working under linux this weekend , but I did not have the skills to get it working before I lost the patience to deal with it. I guess the eve operation system would be closer if we got a client that was native to a free OS. I would not pay for another windows license just to have eve on it. |

DAmn good thought this!!!
If we can run ALT-TAB with spinning 3d cubes, etc for the windows, then why cant we run a thread as the background image... This would allow you to run a program as the background image with a doubleclick to enter the program - right click to bring up the usual windows dialog box....
Dont see why it wouldnt work...
OS programmers Take note!

Not so much '76, more like early 90's.
I have a friend involved in the software industry who I remember was bemoaning the fact that Windows 95 was causing them to write games that would have to sit on top of the Windows OS.
Previous to that with Windows 3 only being a GUI app sitting on top of DOS, they could write software that would interact directly with DOS, rather than having to compete with the resources demanded by Windows.
Ah, happy days creating boot disks for games, editing config.sys and autoexec.bat to set the hardware up correctly for the game requirements
It was much more efficient, however as stated by, a rather angry sounding Johann, PC's were simpler and the hardware range was a lot smaller. Thats not to say its impossible today though...
