Yesterday LondonĘs famous music venue, The Astoria hosted its last ever gigą
Since itĘs opening in 1927, The Astoria has played host to a lot of Acts. But more recently to the end of the 20th to the start of the 21ft century has played host to the likes of (in no order): Nirvana, System of a Down, Coldplay, Napalm Death, Metallica, Jimi Hendrix, Artic Monkeys, MUSE, Blur, Radiohead, Travis, David Bowie, The Rolling Stones, Supergrass, The Foo Fighters, Franz Ferdinand, Black Sabbath, Kaiser Chefs, Linkin Park, Red Hot Chilli Peppers, Pearl Jam, Alice Cooper, Amy Whinehouse, Billy Bragg, Green Day, Oasis, Range Against the Machine, U2, The White Stripes, The Manic Street Preachers, X-RAY Spex, Eels, Hard-Fi. The list goĘs on and oną
Despite heavy pubic opposition, the building had been marked for demolition and the end of January 2009 to make way for a new subway stationą
The even sadder thing is the ex-mayor of London, Ken ōthe cąö Livingston could of stepped in at the time to save this grate peace of LondonĘs culture, but despite public outcry he didnĘt even lift a fingerą

At the end of the day, it's one club in London [has hundreds] or an expensive, already-delayed, massively beneficial transit scheme which London needs. To anyone who takes music as a frivolity rather than a passion, this is an acceptable trade off.
Cross-rail is sorely needed in London, much more than a club.

As horrible as it is, and even speaking as a musician who toured for 2 years and always wanted to play there, I agree with you. |

Yeah, you're right, there's no way they could have closed the McDonalds instead.
Personally I'm sad to see another venue that I used to frequent go and don't even get me started on the travesty of what Camden has become.
