Edited by: Sedious Bloke on 17/01/2009 10:03:16 So guys I'm kind of worried about it :/ I really love the community here and how when I first started eve made me cry irl. I'm just worried that with the influx of whiney noobs the good thing we have here might get screwed up :(
This Dev team is the only one I've ever trusted and the sad thing is I think eve is about the last thing I have faith in after watching greed claim the souls of so many games and so many people around me throughout my life.
You guys think we'll be alright?

The influx of noobs will result in epic whines, tears and ragequits on the forums followed closely by trolling and severe lack of sympathy. The community will change, but for the large part things will stay the same. |

Its a gamble, most games populations spike when it is released then drop when a competitor is released, eve-o didnt. This is because of the playsetyles that made eve unique. If CCP make the playstyle much more hisec-friendly IE. changing wardec mechanics; the die-hard players will leave leaving eve with a playerbase of carebears and wannabees. It would only go down hill from there, people would get bored and leave and the playerbase would steadily decline, i would assume that CCP would make allsorts of deals and offers to keep players and when that fails think of changing the mechanics back, but would ultimately get around less than half of the long-time investors back.
Tl;Dr version: Drastically changing eve would seriously **** CCP over, so dont count on it. |

For the 2 main french sites : - it have a crappy 2003's 14/20 from critics and 17/20 from readers on Jeuxvideo.com (this site is usually generous with notes). Wow had 18/20, War had 16/20. It's not the better site (technically it is but writters are somewhat childish fanboys, readers are young) but it have a lot of readers. - a nice 2003's 8/10 on Gamekult.com (which are usually very very critic, writters are serious, readers are young adults, 7/10 is great there). WoW had 8/10, War had no note. |

You talk as if you are some sort of veteran but failed to realise that Eve is about picking on players with less skill and knowledge and taking advantage of the weak.

You have faith in the Dev team that caved to the whines of the nano whiners, allow corp hopping to evade wars, that nerfs every ship in game and negates 12 months of training, abolishes ghost training and claims it was a bug, faild to recognise the pos exploit etc etc. etc.

And I would think most of the players would care? We do kind of, you know, play eve. If eve goes all emobear on everyone it would promptly die :/ Dunno about you but I kind of like playing it? |

Basically there will be a mass migration of pirates and ppl just interested in a lil ganking towards the newbie hubs for a couple of months, most newbies won't make it past a few isk because they'll be popped every other day then a large number will moan and rage quit over skill training system when someone tells them it will take 2 decades to max out their skills because most of them won't get that you don't need to solo play the game nor need all of those skills.
In short this box isn't about recruiting more newbs its about recruiting more cannon fodder for |

Eve was available as a retail box on release, so the orginal fanbase were all these people you are worried about joining (you couldn't sign up online in 2003 you know). Some of us are even still here!
So, the answer is very little will change, maybe a couple more "nerf this" posts and a lot of questions being asked but that's it - Most whines and change begs don't come from the guys who buy the box as they're less likely to use the forums.

Also, whatever box 'bonuses' there are, can we buy a box and have it added to our account or something?

I just hope that those of us currently playing treat new players with the courtesy we would show to anyone that we wanted to feel welcomed into our home.
That does not mean we have to baby them or change the way the game is played, but that if we want to have more victi^H^H^H^H^Hplayers in the world of EVE to make sure there is fresh blood and CCP is able to justify continuing major improvements, we need to be civil in the forums. We need to be aware that almost none of the people who will join in March have ever played a game quite like EVE and that not only is there a mechanics learning curve, but one of atmosphere and community. They may have expectations and frustrations to overcome - especially coming from games that hand-hold you through every aspect of the game.
The important thing to remember is that these people are giving EVE a shot. They're open to it. The last thing we want to do is respond to every one of their posts with "adapt or die" or "gtfo" or any of the other countless responses we give each other. We can't be a clique and expect people to want to participate in our game.
My hope is that all of us will treat them with patience and respect in the forums and in-game chat, as we again would any guest in our own home. And then chew them up in the game itself. Smack the crap out of them inside EVE; be considerate of them as a guest outside of it.
I'm no carebear. I just want EVE to grow and for CCP to do well. I don't want to be a roadblock in that. I don't want to be someone who has always told people how great the game is and how fantastic the community is and how much everyone needs to try the game out... but then when I get that wish, treat everyone like ****.
As it is, we're going to have major presentation hurdles to overcome, already. Such as the first thing you do after creating your character is to jump into a chat room where you are encouraged to ask for help, but are instead flooded with dozens of ISk seller spams per minute - making EVE look like a run-down, ignored, abused ****-hole that nobody cares about (and who wants to join something that looks like it's in the throes of death?).

I'm with Qordel with this.
CCP really needs to *DO* something, actively, about the massive isk spamming in rookie chat.
Its a disgrace.
How hard can it be to have a bunch of gm's take a 'watch' for an hour a day after which the next takes over, cleaning the crap out of rookie?

Or have automatic flood protection so the same message can't be posted dozens of times in a few seconds.
Or have a blacklist of URLs so that instead of banning 500 individual accounts spamming the same URL, they can just ban the first account and then add the URL from that account's spam to the list, thereby immediately preventative blocking the next 499 would-be spammers.
There is no excuse for ignoring this anymore as other MMOs have taken up a very serious charge to do away with the bulk of such spamming. Warhammer did a fantastic job and LOTR has made it an important part of their goals, too. As the LOTR developers stated on a Massively podcast awhile back: When you develop a world like this and spend so much of your life working in it and improving it and practically living in it, you take a great deal of pride and respect in protecting it.
The impression one gets from the lack of effort by CCP is that they do not care. If they don't handle it before March, it is going to add to a stack of other reasons that a user might not give EVE the chance they otherwise would. It may be the straw on the camel's back.
Yes, they respond quickly to petitions about isk spammers, but what about prevention? At some point, I gotta put a lock on my door and stop calling the police because people break into my front door five times a day. --
