Its a shame that these people have to live in these conditions.
Ok so what's the point of this thread?
I want a collective brainstorming to A Understand how the English of all people can be so under educated. to B Understand WHY we have the chav culture that we do have. How did it form or arrive? what was the catalyst? C to understanding why these kind of areas are common and need to be not just given money but also educated objectives and futures.
Also what kind of positive action and slogan can be taken to change there views?
("You live in England there for your looked after" Give every child a free laptop and make sweets free to all kids <16)
If children have a laptop, then encourage them to use it. give them tools like c# or photoshop.
for the community if the kids can produce a program (for example a small program to work out a pos fuelling calculations it could be anything really) or make a really good art piece. cash incentives do somthing good and educated there ú100 pound go buy some nice new cloths etc
Using programming they just showed advanced mathematics. lo and behold given enough time could write there own programs and even market them.
There are soo many tools on hand that delivered in a FAB LAB with an emphasis on community. i Guarantee with enough effort and the media getting off these peoples back (we all know that the bbc has do nothing but bully a generation of young individuals) these people can change.

I can point to places in just about every nation where people live in miserable conditions.
As I understand it, if you have a UK passport, you have the right to live & work anywhere in the EU. Go do that.

Ok so here is my attempt
A lack of education, compiled with lack of future prospects a lack of corporate thinking and a lack of competent government has resulted in depression and degeneration.
As much as i hate to say it England been such a small country has actually got alot of potential, there seems to be a huge lack of effort to get anything working towards making people happier.
England has loads to offer people its just a shame its wasted. Another peeve is how dull boring and uninteresting that estate looks.

I could BUT i am trying to help people, this isn't a flame nor is it a derogative post.
This is how i *(I simple geek ) can help my small town and make it better for the people were i live.
I really really really want to start a FAB LAB in England in facts its not a dream its something i AM going to do.
And while i am at it i also want to pull my small area and make it into a small scale silicon valley..
I already work in Engineering, instead of using my saved money to leave i could get a course in electronic engineering (i already know how to do it but it helps having the degree ) and but all my experience and skills to use putting them back into the community and helping the children were i live get really good grades and becoming very mathematical and educated.
Fab labs are perfect things for invention idea and software programming you can patent software and all it is code. anybody can code. and it quite profitable the amount of programmers needed in this world is going to double. just look at the iphone app store.

Edited by: TraininVain on 18/01/2009 17:08:59 I think what they're saying here about a youth club is probably on the money.
I also think if you're going to get anything like that to "take" in the long term you need alternatives to crime.
Do you think the jobs are there in the IT sector in Britain?
It's a good idea for something to do though.
I'd also say it's probably not half as bad as David Cameron / the tabloids are making out.

From experience none, or shortage.
But then this is the lack of corporate thinking i am coming back to. If there is no jobs and there is a market you make your own corporation.
Best way to form one of these if to make an open source program, see what kind of coders you get, if you can get a dedicated bunch and get a program a large portion of people use you have the foundations of a successful company. you could even make the program free just to see what kind of responses you get (test the waters?)

Give the youngsters a true understanding that they are not slaves and can form there own company's and be there own bosses and that all those shiny things they want can be brought all it requires is education understanding and effort. What you put in is what you get out.

Buy a couple EEEs or cheepo desktops, volunteer to teach kids programming at the YMCA/community hall/whatever you got. Teach them how to make a decent web page and it might even get them a job. In before Ralara. |

That`s a reality
You can get funding but it tends to be more in the context of funding for an existing business.
Where I used to work they used to take advantage of just about every bit of funding going and while it did appear to be helpful for this or that (like they'd get funding to make the place more environmentally friendly or the WDA would pay for them to have consultants round to make the place run better) it was still up to them to have a product to sell and it was assistance rather than a handout.
That "Me Machine" stuff does sound like the beginnings of a business plan mind you.
I'm looking at the iPhone and the apps and a lot of that stuff is individuals or small teams so far.

You usually see this on council estates - full of unemployed mothers living off the benefit system with no facilities whatsoever ...oh except maybe a set of (broken) swings. Yay!
Many public schools are disgusting places, too. Speak to most kids there and they'll probably tell you how much they hate the place, never do their homeworks, etc and generally have a negative attitude about things. There just isn't anything to do, so they get bored and fall into a habit of either hanging about in the streets or sitting at home playing their PS3 or whatever all the time.
I'm sure every country has it's slums, dosen't mean nothing can be done though...

The state in the video looked no different from estates locally to where I live in the North East of England. Not just in the visual look of the place but the issues described, under-age drinking, lack of money, lack of things to do etc.
Where I live children and teenagers have nothing to do on an evening, there are some community projects where teens can meet up and play games, go on trips, do sports, produce plays for the community and a bunch of other stuff and what I have seen in general is that the kid's who have good grades already at school, behave themselves "as well as a kid can do anyways" and overall do look to be some of the kids that will leave school and go onto better things in life are the kids that are going to these community centres. The kids that are misbehaving, drinking, getting poor grades and overall looking like they have no "or minimal" future prospects, are the ones that do not go to the community centres. It isn't a matter of they can't go, they just don't want to, it's uncool and they would rather be out causing trouble. Sadly I believe it's modern day culture and who do I blame partly for this? The parents, that's who.
There are parents on the estates in my town who send their kids out on the morning and wont see them until late on an evening, they don't care where the child has been, what they have been doing, all the care about is themselves. Their children are learning nothing from their parents, they don't think they have to go to school because their mothers and fathers don't go to work and get everything given to them from the social.
I have lived on estates when growing up and there is good and bad on all of them, good parents who actually give a s**t about what their kids are up to and what grades they are getting, these parents can work all day and still see to the well being of their children, and its those children that have the greatest chance of progressing after they leave school. As for the kids whose parents don't give a ****, well they aren't exactly off to a good start in life are they.
As for the "FAB LAB", well as I have already said, there are projects in the community already but the kids who are the issue are the kids that wont go to school, never mind an out of school project. Talking about giving these kids IT program design, web design skills etc, well in theory its a good idea, but there are limited jobs in this field, and yeah they can start their own business up but considering a lot of businesses fail within their first two years I don't think teaching everyone V Basic, HTML etc is going to fix our communities.
edit: bloody hell, think I just beat my record for longest post.

Right now English kids are beengiven laptops for school, they need to capitalise on these. they need to program on them setup and test everything on them (Break them and then try to fix them)
And yes they should be encouraged to try starting up there own companies its something they should be taught at school.

And what a good read it was,
Firstly your correct on saying that adults do play such a large role on a child's up brining, but then its a vicious circle as they can blame there parents and the parents can blame there parents. its something that needs to be undone.
And again you are correct about teaching programming etc BUT the fab lab does much more, it teaches engineering and science and also Electronic engineering. its designed to let them do anything. pushing there education up and there understanding of there world and how it works and the good that's coming out will make them happy.
If they understand that they Havant been forgotten about and that people are actually working to give them a future. and doing it in a fun way it will work. how about you give them a project to build a huge ****ing robot and to stick it in there town centre, how many adults would be scared if not god smacked that there little trouble maker just built a robot. and showed them calculations that made there parents look like idiots. go figure the respect they would get would double.
On the comment on them not attending because its uncool, then you need to make it cool, Push a anti idiot campaign,

Ok, I'll try to be as constructive as I can be about the situation you posted.
I live in Dewsbury.
It can be a hellhole.
However this is true of just about everywhere.
The places I go are generally out of the way of the Shannon Matthews bullcrap the bombers and the rest.
The fact of the matter is that there are bad places everywhere and thus bring bad traits and symptoms with them.
I live on a council estate, this doesn't make me a bad person and I have had the luck of having good parents and a good upbringing. This has been the case for the last 30 years.
I also have a 3 year old daughter and I am bringing her up with the ideals I was taught.
This town is fine.
Its the people that are ****ed up.
Its the greed and stupid culture that spoils it for everyone.
I'm a lucky man around here, I know who to avoid and who to talk to when I bump into the unavoidable.
This is true in any community.

Deary me. "Broken Britain" is because the majority of chavs can't be bothered to get a damn job. They just reproduce and churn out substantard human beings and live off benefits. The parents don't give a flying **** about their kids, nor do they reprimand them if they do something bad. The kids grow up without consequence and then you just start the process all over again.
