I never flown an assault frigate for real, I mean I have been playing around in it, joined corp-ops doing small-time pvp and stuff.
Now I get into 0.0, how big ships can i take on and expect to win, here I am thinking rats. how about 250k cruisers? 800k BS ? etc...
assume max-skills and rat-specific tank :)
If it makes any difference, I fly the Enyo currently since the ishkur is twice the cost  Should I change ships or can the enyo handle some of the pressure?
What tactics should I use, when fighting the rats? orbiting the smaller ship, taking them out first? |

AF's don't really need any sort of tank when ratting, the BS's wont hit you, and the smaller **** won't do any significant damage.

Ratting in small ships:
Orbit BS, kill small ships first, since only the small ones can actually hit you.
200-300 dps should be able to take down pretty much anything you find... eventually. That includes high-end BS, but it'll take a while.
The enyo will do fine. |

Ratting guristas I can kill everything up to and including BS's in an ishkur. Also, a well fitted AF can kill most larger PLAYER ships.

Against a 7+mil Sansha Faction Battleship spawn I used this setup:
Retribution:
HI: 4 dual light pulse laser II with multifrequency I (yes, the t1 version, no need to worry about ammo, ever.), and a salvager.
Mid: AB
Low: Therm and EM hardener, small repper, EANM, cap power relay.
Took over 5 minutes to kill, but it did do it and if my no-dps ret can do it, an Enyo should be able to waaay faster, especially if you fit the odd Mag Stab.

Ratting in an AF is just silly. Sure, you can do it, but with the pathetic dps, your ISK per hour is going to suck. Either do it in a battleship, or go run highsec level 4s in your battleship.

You'll be able to take on anything in a good AF setup, the Retri is good because you won't need reload, nor run out of ammo. the align time could be better, but it's better than a battleship. Ratting BS make for shameful KMs.  |

the isk per hour u can earn while ninja ratting in an AF is good enough for most players' needs. for example, ~3 hours of ratting in an AF can buy you a battleship. due to your mobility, you can hunt for officer spawns much faster in an AF. a few good drops can yield a coupla hundred mill isk.
AFs are ideal for ninja ratting. melt rats slower than HACs and BSs but with zero risk. this is assuming you dont have alliance/corp access to 0.0. for those who are bored of grinding L4s, and who cant afford or dont want to lose their BS to a bubble gang, ratting in a high DPS AF like ishkur, harpy or wolf does the job and gives u about the same amount of isk as L4 grinding if you count occasional officer drops.
but if youre in protected 0.0 space, there really is not need to rat in an AF.

just use the vexor or thorax with rat specific hardeners ... much cheaper and about as fast in rat killing (and more available in 0.0).
but of course if you are ratting in Angel space, an armor tank AF except Amarr one will have trouble ...

You can take on ANY cruiser and BC class rat in the belts without any problems and it's somewhat effective also. BS size will take time and eventually you will want a bigger ship for those. AF can take them down, but it takes time and the cargo bay is so small (when you get to BS modules) that it's annoying.
You get the same DPS from a good T2 frig as from T1 cruiser (with bad skills) with the exception that the AF won't be hit.
