Hi all.
I visited a POS today in low sec, and went out with a friend to see the sights (dayum there are some huge roids out there) next thing I know a red flagged PC shows up in system and within a minute warps into the belt we are perusing.
I was told they scanned the system to find us, then just warped to said belt.
Just wondering what skills, tools, etc are involved in scanning systems, and what are you able to/not able to scan for?
Thanks :)

He probably scanned you with the built in scanner :) by adjusting the angle until. If the scanner was set on like 20 degrees and the only thing in front of him was the belt you were in well..
You can also use recon probe launcher + scan probes.

you might want to have a look at this: http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=99kRIbp4FBQ&feature=related from the Goons. Its a really quick guide to using the directional scanner to find people.

I suggest you are your friend go to a stationless high sec system and practice this with the built in directional scanner
Goes something like this
Do a 360 degree scan. See if you get a hit. Reduce to 180 degree scan. Nothing? Turn your view 180 degress. Scan again. Get the hit on the other ship back. Reduce to 60 degree scan. Nothing? Scan 60 degress to the left and right of your current view. Get the hit on the other ship back. Narrow to 20 degrees. Hopefully you are only looking at one planet now. Warp there. Now reduce scanner range & repeat. In a few secs you should have the belt your target / victim is in.

For fixed landmarks(stuff that shows up in the right click menu), it had to be the directional scanner, as mentioned above. A skilled combatant can reason out what location someone is at in about 20 seconds or so. No character skills are needed or used by this, just player skills.
If you are in a secluded location like a mission pocket, exploration area or a safespot, he must use scanner probes. That is a somewhat more time consuming process, especially if the location is in deadspace(which hinders probes in detecting your ship). There's a whole slew of character skills for that, most aimed at reducing the time to get a fix.
