Originally by: WildcardTrek NRDS is by far the way to go, not only do you get allot of commerce and trade in your home, you meet and interact with people from all over the world playing Eve that come to 0.0 to get thier feet wet for the first time.
Why more space holding Alliances dont do this boggles the mind, you get people minig your ore, refining in your stations, paying your docking fees, reporting hostiles, contributing to the general safety of the area, and helping out when they can, doing whatever they can.
It helps the economy, it helps trade, it helps promoting Eve, and 0.0. It also helps the little guy learn how the 0.0 lifestyle is.
The rewards are far greater than "renting" space for a set ammount of isk per month, as you will reap far more rewards for showing kindness and help than showing the barrell of your guns.
I agree with Hardin, I have been to almost every region in 0.0, and everywhere I go constantly I see nothing but empty space as far as you can travel, with the exception of the occassional macro ratters, or afk people dockud up 90% of 0.0 is empty, wasted and fought over so they can continue to waste it, and brag about how E-l33t that are conquering it, or why with 900 people in local you couldnt activate a mod or fire a gun.
In NRDS space pew pew comes to you in the form of roaming gangs trying to gank the lonely ratter, or the ice miner, ore miner, and then run and cloak when the response gang arrives.
Although sometimes gangs do come to fight, and usually get a good one, and it can sometimes be in your favor or theirs, but you never have the worry of 900 in local and mods not activating, grid not loading, node sploding etc. etc.
If more 0.0 entities would follow NBSI like Foundation, UK, CVA, and the like 0.0 warefare would indeed be more fun and not suck sitting looking at POS in siege mode days on end.
But as long as space holding Alliances charge exuberant ammounts for "rent", and crazy people with more isk than sense continue to pay, and run NRDS eve will never change, and people will continue to complain about how 0.0 warefare sucks, 0.0 is empty and unused.
And of course we will have these posts to keep reading :)
Personally I think this isn't a bad idea, tho to the 0.0 way of life there are some massive holes in it which force most to not let it occur.
1. You let people in your space and you start having 'problems' people ratting where they shouldn't, blowing up tanked rats for mining gangs, putting POS's where they shouldn't. 2. With the advent of Rorquals many times instead of using your refineries you'll wonder why your hardly getting anything. 3. Your market will be fuked, hard. 4. You'll wonder if the 'light blue' that entered local 20 minutes ago was a cov ops that got a sling on you in the belt for the 20 man HAC gang that entered system and came right to you before you could even move. 5. Docking fees usually aren't used by most alliances.
You did mention the good stuff, and while I agree with you it's quite hard to 'trust' people to do what's right when many ways to 'cheat' and 'break' the system exist.
Who knows, I'd personally LOVE to see some of the 'dead' regions be turned over to RPer's that follow your model (Pure Blind, Vale, Cache, and Cloud Ring) much of those regions haven't seen more then 2 outposts and only their moons have them being fussed over. I'd like to see it occur, I mean amarr have theirs, why not caldari, gall and min?
Or even something as small as allowing outposts to be put up in GW might change this trend. Something I doubt CCP would do, but would be a nice thought as there are more then just us 0.0 my-god-I-want-an-empire people playing out here.
TL:DR version. I like what CVA's accomplished, I just hope we see it repeated somewhere else in game by one of the other 3 ingame races.

Everyone is allowed to rat everywhere. Yes this means that our own pilots do not get preferential treatment but tbh there are lots of other ways to earn ISK. Similarly there are rows about NPCing 'behaviour' and 'tactics' but people do get educated.
POS permissions are required and granted primarily to those who work with us to help develop/defend the area. As Providence is 100% Sov claimed we know when illegitimate POS are errected and if the errecting corp did not have permission then they either take them down or have them destroyed.
The other things you mention can be issues but in general sensible adults can work these things out. It just requires a little maturity and commonsense.
Originally by: Banlish 2. With the advent of Rorquals many times instead of using your refineries you'll wonder why your hardly getting anything.
This would be a problem if refine fees were in any way a major element of our income, as they are not, it doesn't really matter.
Originally by: Banlish 3. Your market will be fuked, hard.
Please explain?

Yep people do exploit neutral status. That's only natural... but the beauty of good NRDS is that if you are paying attention to intel channels then you will normally know there is a 20 man HAC gang in the vicinity before it even arrives. And of course if the 'neut' attacks you itself then it gets marked red. No system is perfect and NRDS is not going to protect you from random raiders and ganks but at least 95% of the people in the neighbourhood will be friendly and unlike NBSI space may even show up to assist if you are under attack.
Originally by: Banlish 5. Docking fees usually aren't used by most alliances.
Most alliances dont run NRDS... Certainly in Provi neutral individuals, corps and alliances will pay docking fees. Sure some probably don't but why worry about that! Docking fees for BS are usually about equivalent to 5/10 mins ratting in local belts so are not really gonna worry anyone interested in making some isk!

Operating NRDS means you get to know who you can rely on and who you can trust. When an NBSI alliance set someone blue do they really know that they are trustworthy? Do they have anyway of measuring their loyalty? With NRDS any new corp/alliance in your space has to DEMONSTRATE its commitment by restraining and controlling its members from shooting everything in sight. When a corporation or alliance can do this you know you KNOW they are committed.

We have ours because we fought for it for 5 years. There is no point giving 0.0 to anyone who hasn't fought for it because they will simply lose it again the minute to going gets tough!

well, the minnies did have a NRDS 0.0 presence, but sadly we lost the fight to keep it. in the long run i think thats helped to define and shape UK more than anything else, these days we do guerilla combat and love every second of it. |

Edited by: adriaans on 21/01/2009 14:37:17 NRDS area has major flaws, in fact vs me they might as well just be NBSI, as they go ''ohh look 250 mill bounty SHOOT HIM!!!!!) (yes, i made sure i had neutral status, unless just because youre -10 it for some reason doesn't apply), no i didn't die, since even with blues i always am watchful... but fact is, FDN shoots me, CVA shoots me, and i am not set to red... (and i did not shoot them first)
NRDS policies has some major flaws if even youre own members wont follow them just because i got a bigh bounty....
edit: where the heck do you people find ''empty space''? everywhere i go and its empty local gets someone/gang that is after me after a short while, no matter where i go |

Was flying my npc alt through providence one time and a guy in a belt was asking for help, some -a- stiletto had him scrammed. I warped into the belt to watch what was going on and a friendly pilot killed the stiletto so the miner was able to escape.... in his chimera....
Not sure if the roaming -a- gang that jumped in later could have even broken the guy's tank, but it was cute that someone helped out the paxton mining carrier. |

When diplomats battle over spreadsheets the results appear to be surprisingly intriguing. Surprising both in a Henry-Kissinger-with-nun-chukas kind of way and also surprising because given the difficulty of even finding a Foundation diplomat, it's hard to imagine there can be more than one of this strange breed.
I've also always imagined a diplomatic battle to be more along the lines of the wonderful French movie, Ridicule ("To get royal backing on a needed drainage project, a poor French lord must learn to play the delicate games of wit at court at Versailles"). But in space. Obviously.
Anyway, unable to defeat the diplomatic dark lords (I'll leave them to name themselves, lest they strike me down with an uppercut of arcane alliteration of something), Loafer left and the ragequit aspect consisted of some isk and offlining a corp tower (U3K), in addition to the admin stuff already mentioned. He invested well in the alliance during his time here, so the isk side of it limited compared to earlier contributions. The tower is back online - though most of the ejected ships (no caps but one T2 BS) were popped.
Regrettably we didn't get to use the day of not being in an NRDS alliance to go smartbombing in Jita |
