I'm ratting in a apoc deep in 0.0. The rats I'm killing is Guristas(Kinet/Thermic).
I'm amarr spec'd so I don't have the choice to use raven/drake for this
Currently using: 8x Mega Pulse, 3 cap rec, target painter, LAR II, 3x Spec rat hardys, 3x Heat Sinks and Hammerhead drones.
Don't think it's good enough, takes too long time to get the rats down.
Go for the beams maybe?

Edited by: Dirk Magnum on 21/01/2009 11:13:12 Add speed mod, webber, and a CCC rig at least. Drop the target painter. You can probably also drop a heat sink for a tracking mod if there are still damage issues against smaller stuff.
All of this will move you in the right direction towards offsetting the fact that EM damage isn't ideal against Guristas. I mean seriously on most Guristas ships at least half the EM damage you do is negated, and some Guristas rats have 80-90% EM resists.
Alternatively, use autocannons. You don't get a damage bonus to lasers anyway, and autocannons w/ kinetic/thermal ammo will let you smack the crap out of Guristas. It might not even be a bad idea to utilize the launcher on the Apoc w/ kinetic missiles, although you'd have to run an EFT check on that one probably.

yes use autocannons. You will do terrible damage to the guristas unfortunately due to their insane em resist. If you insist on using lasers you will wanna use multfrequency as much as possible so you do mainly thermal damage.
my current ratting apoc is
8 MP2
3 cap rechargers, 1 tracking comp
1 large rep, 2 hardeners, 1 tracking enhancer, 3 heatsinks.
Gets you a great range with megapulse and on most targets i just use multifrequency and melt them.

Why use an Apoc instead of Abaddon or Geddon? I'd suggest a MP + MWD Geddon, along with 4 Heavy Wasps II (or 5x Vespa II) + some lights...DPS is higher on guns alone, and tho it requires some micromanagement, it surely performs way better than the Apoc... Well with all the gunnery support skills already trained he could get large hybrid up to 4 with prototype 425's and do about 100 dps less than lasors. Should at least get better effective dps and a better tank with the less grid and cap usage.

Use your apoc as a fleet sniper, with the range bonus that's pretty much what they are made for.
For ratting jump in an abaddon (at least here you get a good damage bonus from the ship + resistances) and fit a full rack of pulse II's, a tracking comp and as many heat sinks as you can manage. Choose thermic heavy crystals and try again.
Also make a note to fit tracking and dps implants, the 3% ones are good enough, they'll pay for themselves very quickly.
As has already been pointed out amarr aren't ideal for the kind of rats you're hunting, but its doable.
The alternatives ofc is to fit autocannons (rly not a fan of this) or cross train to another race. Personally I'm an amarr purist so I'd get the abaddon.

I am also in the same boat. All my skills are in amarr. I have started using the Sacrilege to rat as it only requires missile skills. It rinses through BC and below and takes down BS in a reasonable amount of time.

Hate to say it but ratting guristas with a laser boat is one of the most annoying things to do in EVE. Guristas just laugh off EM damage and to make it worse, they jam frequently and even worse, they often like to orbit at long range, and long range laser crystals not only do less raw damage but also more of the damage is in EM.
If you absolutely had to do it, I'd recommend using beams - the long natural range lets you use multifrequency / gamma, which at least have high raw damage and decently high thermal damage - and consider using an armageddon instead, since that can fit up to 5 heavy drones - Wasp IIs will add some much-needed kinetic damage.
The downside there is that the armageddon doesn't really have the fitting to support a t2 active armor tank and a full rack of T2 megabeams :(
You might consider using a passive shield tanked, drone-spewing, 3x BCS, 4x heavy assault launcher Curse, or just use a Sacrilege. __________________________________

MWD into multifrequency range then turn off MWD and kill. You can substitute a 3% CPU implant for the faction hardner. Keep a set of scorch crystals but only use them to instapop frigates so you don't have to deploy the hornets.

my geddon is the following atm for guristas
mega modulated energy beam 1 x6
100mn AB cap recharger 2 x2
heat sink 2 x2 kenetic hardner 2 x2 large armor repper 2 cap power relay 2 x2 damage control 2
ccc x2
runs repper and guns forever, tanks the tripple 1.8mill spawns and has 30k range with multifreq so you dont have to move as they tend to orbit at 32, i tend to use gamma though as they tend to wonder off a bit sometimes, using gamma only takes you down to 380 dps for me from 400 ish.
also never needing to reload ftw

The problem with the geddon is that it doesn't have room for both sentry drones and light drones, and without light/medium drones sooner or later you will end up permanently scrammed & webbed in a belt.
Without sentries/heavies the Armageddon doesn't have enough dps to outweigh its huge cap & fitting disadvantage against the Apocalypse. |
