Meridius is correct - later tech levels of crystals will introduce explosive/kinetic elements of damage.
How they're gonna explain that one is a bloody mystery though.

Anyone with any shred of intelligence would know that a laser can easily impart explosive damage by flash-vaporizing metal in a confined area, something entirely possible by pumping enough raw energy onto a focused point on a target's hull. Kinetic, I don't know, maybe it's some kind of directed particle weapon instead of a laser.
I don't care what ridiculous tech-speak you have to tell each other in order to justify changing lasers, facts are facts: Lasers blow against armor, and there's no other weapon type in Eve that suffers from this disadvantage. Those of you queefing that hybrids only do two damage types as well should take note that their damage types are equally effective against shields and armour. More damage types is always good.
Lasers blow against armour but only because they absolutely rock against shields.
Balance, y'know?

Not quite. Lasers rock against shields, hybrids rock against shields. Lasers blow against armour, hybrids rock against armour.
Stupid, y'know?
D'oh.
DOT is still (virtually) the same who gives a fug?

Right. I take it you've never had a blaster boat glued to your shields - once you do, you know they go down plenty quickly.
You can't argue against it - lasers have a deficit that no other weapon type has to work with.
That's because most blaster boats are set for pure damage output and, probably, because a lot of people still aren't fitting kinetic hardeners.

Problem is, everyone armour tanks these days and end up with higher kinetic/heat resistances than the granted 60% EM resistance.
End result?
You're probably better off using lasers to strip their shields super quick and still achieve the same damage against armour as rails/blasters anyway.
