I'm just sitting here waiting as so many others for the server to come back online, and I'm thinking: "The game is more than a year old. Why do they still have the downtime each day? Isn't it time to try and run the server for more than 23 hours?"
What does it acctually do? Why can't we have a downtime every 2 days? When are we gonna get rid of it? What do you guys think? ---

Nice corporation name!
Downtime, or specifically the daily occurence of downtime, doesn't really bother me. It's when I logon after downtime I get a bit concerned about what has secretly been changed and the repercusions.

Edited by: Iratus Caelestis on 29/07/2004 13:01:31 Yes basically. Any SQL database needs pruning on a fairly regular basis and without the usual corporate luxury of running overnight processes I assume this is the only way they can get rid of the errant records and transactions.
As Eve is such a transaction intensive database daily down time to do this pruning isn't unreasonable.
That wouldn't take an hour though so I assume they have other stuff to do as well such as killing off deamons on the apps servers and whatnot. Perhaps Kieron would like to enlighten us on what the daily downtime involves?
Oh and kthxbye is still funny :) Except when I accidentily use it in e-mail responses at work. They don't like that.

I heard that the hampsters which power the server get too tired after 23 hours, so they need a 1 hour break.

I would assume that they assign the donwtime to an hour, simply to give them a buffer. Sometimes it's just a reboot, takes a few minutes, then they're ready, but sometimes it takes 55 minutes after applying a server-side patch or whatever.
But I be they say an hour to be consistent. If people think it's an hour, walk away, then find out it was a 5 minute restart, people might get angry because of certain circumstances.
