Will linux have premium support or will the linux support be stopped ?
I'm worried sick, cause as soon as office 2007 fully works under wine, i plan to move from windows to linux definitively :(

Considering, that win client in wine works so much better then the supported client I don't know how much this will change.
What is a bigger risk is that they will require something that doesn't work in wine yet, don't know if there is any such problems on the horizon.
Sure it would be nice to have a working official client, but considering the problems so far I doubt it will come anytime soon. Also the focus on mac is quite understandable as, as far as I know you have to pay for some wine equivalent for mac and it probably got a bigger install base. So if it weren't for the official client mac users wouldn't have anything we are lucky to have wine.
So don't worry, be happy!
And what on earth do you really need in office? =) |

Try OpenOffice. It's free, it reads, writes, and saves all the office formats (in some cases better than office), as well as just about everything out there. It is completely cross-platform (versions for Linux, Mac, and Windows) and isn't a resourse hog. If that is all that is keeping you from switching to Linux completely, then your wait is over.

Agreed, I've been running ubuntu (finally windows free!!!!) for the last few weeks and its been great, never going back.

Yep, OO works just fine. It might be if you run some funky Excel sheets they might be fubar in OO due to some incompabilities, but 99% of the stuff you do in Office should work in Open Office. Anyhow, the Premium Lite will be Shader Model 2 which wine and cedega fully support so the Classic client will probably just be replaced by the Premium Lite one. |

I switched to Ubuntu more than 3 years ago.
Have been playing EVE all that time via WINE (tested official client first few weeks after it came out and found it lame compared to WINE+windows client).
Premium already works via wine and has been since a few weeks or so after Premium appeared. On my machine (laptop with fairly old graphics card) the FPS with Premium sucks (10% of what I get with classic) so I hope Premium Light will be faster on my machine - but I intend to get a new laptop anyway so not too worried here.

Ok, everyone is saying that EVE premium is working better in Wine anyway, but I'm not experiencing this.
I have an 8600gt, and I get 70-100fps using classic mode.
Running the premium version, I get 20-35fps. This is with Wine 1.1.13.
So really, what does happen to the linux users come March? If I can't run the game better than 35fps with a 8600, what's the point?

I'm having a similar issue as Na Illzid, FPS is much lower in the premium client. |

You guys did read the dev blog, right? CCP are replacing the classic client with premium "lite". We won't know how wine will perform with the lite client till it gets released (most likely on sisi first).
Also, 35 fps isn't enough for you?  |

35 is more then enough but compared to the windows classic client its terrible.
Cheap NV 9800 here with the Ubuntu and it goes 31-35fps atm. If the classic client is replaced with the premium on linux performance over wine will suck bad me thinks - I'd stick to the classic.
Being able to shoot ppl is more important then the great looks of their ships.

Why?
Why we are unable to get rid of this urban legend already?
The Premium client splits its load between CPU and GPU. The Classic offloads a lot more on the poor CPU, using little juice out of that preciousss vid card you bought.
Why there's someone still thinking that in this day and age, the classic client would perform better by using the machine's resources inefficiently, as opposed to Premium, which uses the machine's resources efficiently? |

Thing don't change anything here.
D3D is emulated and converted to OpenGL. Sending more work to GPU is = to sending more work to CPU. (And it's why upgrading a 8600GTS to a GTX260 will not change anything but overclocking your Core2 to 4Ghz will bring a lot more FPS... if you have a decent video card, of course)
Wine and Cedega are CPU intensive.

AS long as EVE works under wine we'll be fine. We'll just have to be more vocal on the wine forums than we have.
