The article on modular ships in the new E-ON quotes a figure of 3,125 possible configurations for each race. The implication I get from this is that components from a given race will only work with other components from the same race. Is this correct? Is my dream of building a Calmatamallente shield-armor-speed-tanking missile turret ECM ship dead?

The devs have not said yet.
I'd like to see more breadth though and mixing of ship from various races :). I am though trained to fly all 4 races ships, though in recent times I've mostly used Caldari ones to PVP and Matari ones to PVE.
I can see why they might not want to allow mixes between races though for balance purposes, but it would make it a lot more interesting.
It would also enable RPers to make things like Ammatari ships :). (Or Angel, etc).

Although, it would be interesting if co-operating factions would produce some common modules, so we can see some missile spawning armour tanked ones... or fast droneships.

It'll be no for aesthetics more than anything. A ship with amarr, minny & caldari components would look awful. Using a similar color scheme and textures across the same race will allow the ship to look good regardless of the individual modular makeup, as long as all the modules are of that race.

well TBH that seems a little short sighted. I see no reason why you couldnt get for example an amarr ship and apply caldari sheild technology to it - as long as you had the relevant skills in all areas concearned.
My biggest concearn - as a small outfit - is who will be able to make these ship combinations? Is it again something that will only be availble to large corporations or allieances?

I'd rather like to know what size ships we're talking about? because honestly, i doubt that they are going to make Tech 3 frigs, cruiser and bs all at once? or is that just me?
