Recently I've been feeling confident enough in my SP level to prepare a BS to fly. I have over 3m SP, and so I've started mining and hoarding minerals to build a BS. I've been looking over the forums over the past couple weeks and I can't decide which Minmatar battleship would be worth my time. I have read that a typhoon can be good if you already are at the 'omgwtfpwn' level of SP, which I most definitely am not. I intend to use the ship only for missions and possibly some nullsec ratting in the far future. It'll be (most likely) an artillery ship. I am leaning towards a Maelstrom, but I don't want to sink all my minerals and ISK into a Mael if a Tempest could serve as a good artillery platform for less. Any suggestions are welcome.
tl;dr: What's the best Minmatar battleship for missions?

Tbf, having 3m SP as a minmatar is barely good enough to fly a rifter properly. I'd stick with Cruisers, maybe BC's if that.

So then I'd be better off working on getting up to using tech 2 modules for everything, and then moving to a bigger ship? I fly a Hurricane right now and have no trouble running level 3s alone, so I figured that was at least some indication I was on the right track for PvE.

I have ~15m SP, and I can fly T2 cruisers/battlecruisers efficiently, but that's what I've put my skills into. For missioning I would recommend the Mael, but have at least T2 guns before you start getting serious with a battleship for PvP or missioning (especially missioning with Matari ships, ugh). After all, everyone needs some type of spacer in their sigs to show it's not part of the post.

Are you prepared to lose the ship as you learn?
If so, go ahead and tune out the people who tell you not to fly anything above a starter ship until you have 7mil sp, and other such drivel. If you can afford to buy it, fit it, and can handle losing it, fly whatever you like.
I am no expert in anything, but I do know that people play this game to fly cool ships. If you cant handle losing the ship, dont ever sit in it. Sorry, I dont fly minnie BS, and have little experience fighting them, but then Im a highsec war noob still. |

Unfortunately BS ships are quite skill intensive for missions, they are harder than what you may think. You can do some effective T1 BS fits that require very little SP in order to be effective, however Minmatar have non that I'm aware of (although I'm sure something could be conjured up).
I'd say if your interests are in the mission and complex running content of the game, go for a Maelstorm because it complements the skills required for a Vargur better. If you wish to PvP, start with a Cane, Wolf, Jaguar, Stabber, Rifter, Rupture or Trasher. |

I have flown the Maelstrom in level 4s with t1 gear, and while doable it takes forEVER to do anything in them. I am much happier ratting in a hurricane making more money than a mission runner. |

I have wanted to fly big ships ever since I started EVE, but the more I read about Minmatar ships the more I feel like the Hurricane is big enough. I'm getting really tempted to just work on getting a great 'caine fit down and saying ***k the rest. |

I have never ever heard anyone with anything bad to say about a 'cane's ability to blow stuff up with great speed. By the time you get really good with that, you will only be a couple skills away from being able to sit in a BSand not be afraid of a 3k belt rat. |

Don't listen to what others have to say, even me.
Worst case you buy it and lose it, and learn something. Otherwise, buy it, find out if it works for you, and if not, sell it back, or hold onto it until you can use it properly. What else is there to spend your isk on?

Don't listen to the drama queens, missions aren't that hard. You may not be able to aggro a whole room and go AFK, but you'll be alright if you use your head.
I've only flown the Tempest in missions and never failed one yet, nor lost the ship. |

Edited by: smelly socks on 24/01/2009 11:00:03 I did exactly that with 3M skill points... jumped into a typhoon. I started testing setups in level 3's to get a feel for it, and quickly jettisoned the phoon for a tempest. Once I was happy(ish), then I started on level 4's and while I'm much slower than my 92M SP buddy in his CNR, they're doable providing you're managing the agro.
Couple of tips, skill up enough on drones so you can kill webbing/scram frigates. Without them, if you can't handle the aggro then you can't get out. Focus on getting your tanking skills up to a reasonable level, then on dps skills (drones and guns).
Having said that, I agree with most of the people here that in some ways it's not worth it until you have 10M+ SP as missions generally go very slowly, but they're still a good isk generator and great fun to do with friends. |

Great thing about battlecruiser your not loseing skillpoints with the skill required for all battlecruisers and commandships a great starting point, overall your not loseing much.
The core skill for any guns are the same you can cross train them anywhich awy after that.
Minmatar battleships; well the tempest has 6 gun slots 6 lows and 5 mids makes for a very bad shield tank, below par armor tank and less damage than everything going.
Typhoon v.nice to play. Mealstrom rather tedious and boring with running level 4's, short range like a raven with slot configuration but with less range and dps.
Hac's less potent in many cases, recons worthless and battlecruisers mid range.
Frigates are rather good.

1: tempest do NOT make a bad shield tank(you can fit a better shield tank than a armor tank) 2: HaCs are nice(vagabond still one of the best out there) 3: matar recons ships owns.
To the OP: on paper matar ships might look bad compared to other races ships but just pay attention to what you do and you got tons of nice ships to use.
for missions lvl4: id skill up BS 4, some gunnery and some shield tanking skills and allso get T2 small/medium drones and you should be good to fly a mael. |

Edited by: McRoll on 24/01/2009 15:33:42 If you want to start lvl 4 as a Minmatar, the best choice is the maelstrom. It has the advantage that you only need to train gunnery skills and enough engineering to use tech 2 hardeners, which happens really fast. I started flying lvl 4 with around 7 mil SP and many of them were also in learnings, probing, armor tank etc, so you dont really need that much SP to be able to solo lvl 4 with it.
I'd say you are ready when you have tech2 small and medium drones (this is a MUST because otherwise you wont kill the frigs and cruisers), large turrets at least 3 (better 4), minmatar bs at least 3 (better4) and the ability to use tech 2 shield hardeners.
When you have all of the above, you will need to increase your DPS which should be pretty horrible with little SP. Train rapid firing, surgical strike and the skills needed to use tech 2 gyros. Before starting, read up the mission info on eve-survival.org and fly carefully, watch out for triggers. Remember, a pilot compensates his lack of SP if he flies smart. If you do it right, you will find most missions **** easy, even with little SP.

Wait til you have 354million skillpoints and then get a phoonie. If you're running missions, I'd say the maelstrom is good enough, but best is Vargur. But yeah, as others have said, I wouldn't get in a BS before AT LEAST 5 mil sp. Rather 7-10mil sp.

Edited by: Sven Glueckspilz on 24/01/2009 16:49:12 I started with 3.5 M SP and a 'phoon to do Lvl 4s. to be honest, sometimes it was tough, sometimes I lost a ship, but in the end it always paid off - by financial means and by means of fun. BC was nice tot at those times, but I just wanted to try something new. Just apply some good tactics to missions :-) And, you probably will learn a lot.
But, don't overestimate your abilities....just because you can do a Lvl 4 it does not mean you are able to PvP against other BS - thats what happend to me ;-)
conclusion: imho, possible, if you enjoy it...like everything fn eve.

Fly a malestorm or a pest since you say its mostly for ratting / missions.
Fit a hardy tank. Disreguard what ppl say about neeeding xM 59 to fly a ship. its a load of rubbish. It matters on where your points are at and your fittings, and well, missions dont need to much.i would recommand something along the lines of a XL booster, 2 or 3 hardeners + cap booster. |

Best overall mission ship is the Maelstrom, does as good as the Vargur only cheaper and with less ammo. Its also requires less thought and just some common sense to operate.
Now, I've done the 3mil BS thing, and yes IS feasible isk wise to do that.. just, just don't get to believing you can PVP in it. Tech 1 small drones are a must so make sure you skill them high enough to launch all five. |

minmatar bs's are soooo hard to be good at, the maelstrom being the most "forgiving". i have 7 times your SP and still am not ready for a phoon(my ultimate goal), my suggestion would be to think a little smaller for a while as the skills for that will scale very well for a bs. best sig ever:)

If you think corp is different than a guild or clan you have some insecurity issues.

Areh- Large ships fly suprisingly poorly when you dont have enough skillpoints in supporting skills. There are alot of penalties for being in a large ship, poor tracking, slow moving, and you take more damage cause you're easier to hit. And without developed skills you dont see many of the benefits. I can testify that the preformance I got out of bs was extremely frustrating compared to my hurricane when i started doing level 4s. (I still got more tank/dps i think out of the bs.)
That said, the biggest decision is if you ever want to pvp. I doubt that you do. But if you want to go that direction specelize into the cane. Bc skills like gunnery translate well over to cruisers And between them you've got some solid ships to go get blown up in. Ac cane is very good in pvp.
If you want to be an npcer get into a bs. Unless you get a kick out of something else bs are the way to go. With three million skillpoint and the ability to fly a battleship im assuming you have virtually no support skills. Can you fire the guns? How about drones? Or cruise missiles? If you can use the appropriate sized modules get a bs and try it. Otherwise do a bit more training.
As far as which bs, Id recomend the pest. It can be armor tanked or shield tanked. It doesnt require missile skills, and its not as expensive to lose as the maelstrom. And there honestly is a chance to lose a bs in a mission with warp scrambling rats when youre learning and have few sp.

I bought a mealstrom for missioning when i was at 4mil sp and ive never lost it since then.(im at 11 mil now) I wont recommend it for pvp tough cause its boring as hell.
T2 guns arrent a must on it, Just make sure your mids and lows are full of t2 mods. The meal tanks like a beast and if you lose it to a mission you prolly did something wrong.
For the rest of minmatar ships: Yes they do crap damage on eve fitting tool yes they have less hitpoints on eve fitting tool
Thank god this isn't Eve Fitting Tool Online. |

I got the Mael for missions at around 5m sp. It is the easiest minmatar BS to get into skillwise. This is what I had when I went into it, and I did fine.
- Tech II Shield Hardeners - Tech II large shield booster - Drones 5 with lvl 3 interfacing - Very close to Tech II drones (They help Tons!) - Decent (lvl 4 in most) gunnery skills (Tech II gyros) - Minmater BS 3
Just plan out your fit, and use eve-survival on every single mission you go to, and you should be fine, and skip harder optional parts of some missions. You can fit your ship out with cheap shield rigs as well which help, but won't hurt too bad if you lost it. I didn't lose my first mission Maelstrom till months later, to carelessness on a mission to not managing triggers right.

You are giving this member terrible advice. They don't say starter ship, they imply T1 frigates. It is true that some players go orgasmic flying a more advanced ship when they are not truly ready. If that turns them on, and if they play to get blown up and lose nearly their entire net worth in the game, go for it.
However, this forum is for questions, answers and advice, and the advice players give to stay in smaller ships until a certain level of skill points are reached (more appropriately, SP in defined areas, such as gunnery/missiles, elec., engin., usually) is quite sound, making your advice lunacy. There are very few players who join to quickly fly a BS, get blown up and then after getting blown up, say, "OK, I can cancel my subscription now." Your advice appeals to these morons.
For any player who likes the game and wants to keep playing for a long time, the advice these others players give is correct. Stay in smaller ships, learn tactics, gain skill points to make your next level ship effective, and build up your wallet so the loss of the BS (in this example) is a small fraction of the total wallet.
Your wacky advice needs to be ditched. |

I am currently flying a hurricane and quite easily doing level 3s on a quality 18 agent. I do only have 3m SP, but all my SP are in either gunnery, engineering, electronics or spaceship command, with over half (1.7m) being in gunnery. My weakest area is my drone skills, I still only have drones 3, and don't want to get into anything bigger than my BC until I have at least T2 drones available to take out smaller ships. I could afford to lose a maelstrom to a level 4, but I feel at this point it's not worth the risk of losing a ship worth over 100m when my net worth is less than 200m. I'm staying in my 'caine for now, and taking everyone's advice by raising my skills so I can get a very good fit going on a maelstrom before I start level 4s alone. |

IMO Minny BS's suck for pve, But as a low sp char i would go for a maelstrom, the tempest is pritty crap and u need a load of skills to fly a typhoon properly (Adv weap upgrades 3 or 4).
If you are prepared to think outside the box and do the same as i did with my minny alt. That is to cross train to fly drakes and ravens which are the king of pve which equates to more isk for your time spent missioning or 0.0 ratting.
The great thing about doing this is that you should of allready have trained up your basic missile skills so all you need to do is to train caldari frig and cruiser skills to fly a drake as the battle cruiser skill is multi raced. A passive-fit drake will **** allover lv3s and can even solo most lv4s. Plus a Passive drake doesnt need you to train cap skills.
When you have alittle more sp in your support skills then you train caldari BS skill and start flying cruise ravens.
As the saying goes time = money and why not increase the amount of isk u can make by flying the best pve ships around. With minimal skill training a minny char has no excuse not to respec to a raven. |
