Edited by: Sweetness Sideways on 24/01/2009 01:35:46 yes yes i did what CCP could have done :)
--> http://www.apeocorp.com/shadertester/ShaderModelTest.exe
its a installer it will install 2 things
1) the tool to check what shaders are supported 2) XNA 3.0 framework (the tool uses this framework from microsoft)
First it installs the tester, then it autostarts the xna installer (mandatory else it wont work)
once the XNA setup is done (just press next for a few time)
the tester will load this dos style box and state what shader is, and what shader is NOT supported...
Cheers!

I wrote one too, and posted it in the dev blog comments - perhaps I should have made a thread here, too.

Meaning no offense, Sweetness Sideways, mine is a little simpler - no framework or installers, just an executable that queries the display adapter and shows the best pixel shader it supports. The source is included, as well, although you'll need the DirectX SDK to recompile it. |

yours is not fully correct...
Quote: Adaptor 1:ATI Radeon HD 4800 Series Pixel shader model:3.0 Adaptor 2:ATI Radeon HD 4800 Series Pixel shader model:3.0
As you can see it states a HD 4800 (I got a 4850) can only handle SM3, yet it can handle up to 4.1 (DirectX 10.1), yes i am running windows...
fix that "bug" ad i do have to agree yours will be superious and more easy to use :)

My detector is linked against DirectX 9, which means it's limited to the pixel shader profiles DX9 supports - up to 3.0, it would seem. I only have Windows XP, so I can't test it against Vista. I don't want to start writing LoadLibrary-based code when I can't actually load the required libraries, so I'm afraid it's going to have to be good enough.
In fact, I think I'll just say that this tool is tailored to EVE: it'll show you if your computer supports the Premium client (SM3), the Lite client (SM2), or only the Classic client (SM < 2). It's not a bug, it's a feature!

Well, I know what my card support, but I mostly interesting in some measuring tool, which could tell me, how well my card can handle EVE at certain resolution. |

then eve should build a stress test tool, just like westwood did with Earth & Beyond..
at 1st startup & if there was a system change (like new cpu, new gfx card....) it would ask if it should run the tool, and set the optimal value's for your system
