For starters he assumes that you'll still be using a reaction based drive, as opposed to a reactionless drive (and thus no heat generated) he assumes that you, being a reasonably intelligent stealthy future space person, havent figured out a way to store waste heat on-board ship to dump later when not at risk of fiery nuclear death. Also most of his detection methods are based on slower than light and only in-system, in the grand scheme of things, thats very small scale, if your playing hide and seek in a solar system why not just nuke the other guys planet and be done with the whole mess? And even if all space battles occur in the confines of a solar system, a ship at pluto reads a drive flare near mercury (oh but wait he doesnt cos theres a great nuclear ball obscuring the thrust patterns!) and pops a nuke off at the est. destination, only to read another 50/60 drive flares (and a few days) between his missile launching and the nuke actually detonating. Morale of the story:- space is damn big and you aint gonna hit much without magic faster-than-light-o-vision which means stealth is the default ship setup, not something you really need to work on.
