Has anyone tried the Soft Triplehead tool with Eve? I run a three monitor setup, and I've always wanted to stretch the game across three screens. However, Eve kicks up a fuss if I try to run the game using this tool (it doesn't like having extra files - a precaution to prevent cheating I presume). This is the error I'm getting:
Originally by: "Verification Failure" Your EVE client installation appears to have extra files.
If you've recently applied a patch you may need to reboot your machine. If the problem persists, please remove the files listed below.
Unknown files found in directory D:\Games\EVE\bin\: D:\Games\EVE\bin\d3d8.dll D:\Games\EVE\bin\d3d9.dll D:\Games\EVE\bin\SoftTH.cfg D:\Games\EVE\bin\SoftTH_hook.dll
I've had a look in some of the more obvious places to disable this file check, but to no avail. Anyone have any advice/experience on trying to get this to work? Apologies to CCP if this breaches the EULA (I might be mistaken, but I don't think it does given the nature of the tool).

Just did a quick check on the TOS to make sure I'm not going to have the banstick coming my way, and this is the appropriate entry:
Quote: #21 You will not attempt to decipher, hack into or interfere with any transmissions to or from the EVE Online servers, nor will you try to create or use any third party add-ons, extras or tools for the game.
In principle, the use of Software Triplehead does indeed breach this rule, but no more so than tools such as EFT does; it doesn't actually interfere with the game nor give an unfair advantage to one player or another. With this in mind, I don't suppose anyone has managed to find a complete list of command line switches for eve.exe/ExeFile.exe? I'm guessing this file check is something that can be bypassed and I'd love to test this out in Eve. I know it's been done with Triplehead2go, so this little piece of software should work just fine... once Eve allows me to boot up with extra files in my /bin/ folder!

Edited by: Elysarian on 27/01/2009 02:22:55 I strongly suspect the folder verification cannot be bypassed - if it is there as an anti-macro/anti-scripting measure that is.
EFT and the like are allowed because they are "passive" in that they don't interface with the game itself, they just read information from the database via the API (but are incapable of writing back to the database).
have you tried putting those DLL's in your C:\windows\system32\ (or equivalent) folder instead? |

I'll try and drop the script and hook files into system32 and see if that works when I get home, but I suspect it needs to be in the same location as the .exe file to work.
Bit of a shame if the mechanic cannot be sidestepped to be honest, as multiple monitors are a lot more common and Eve would look frankly fantastic in triple widescreen resolution... not to mention how functional it wold be having your overview on one side, everything else on the other and your ship in all it's glory in the middle! |

TripleHead doesn't modify signals sent between the eve servers, it just changes how the EVE GUI window is displayed. It is fine. If running EVE using TripleHead is illegal so is using nVidia Control Center, or ATI Catalyst Control Center or even Windows. They're layers of software that allow EVE to interface with the hardware, same as TripleHead. |

I didn't say it was against the EULA to use this, just that it likely isn't possible to use this software with Eve due to the checks done at launch.
Only way I know to do this would be either to use a real TH2G hardware device or set up a pair of gfx cards with 3 (or 4) monitors using the "extend my desktop" feature in Windows.

The problem with doing the extended desktop business is the lack of hardware acceleration that doing that entails. That means average performance... seems a bit of a waste!

And bypassing those checks through any means not sanctioned by CCP would indeed violate the EULA. Rock and a bloody hard place until CCP gives the green light to either run exefile.exe with the appropriate argument to bypass these checks or writes them out of the client.
I don't see either as likely, but I'm determined and have a remarkable number of petition slots... |

Edited by: Camilo Cienfuegos on 27/01/2009 20:46:32 Attempt #4: Added folder /eve/SoftTH/ & created shortcut to /bin/exefile.exe, modifying the start in attribute to look at /SoftTH/ instead of /bin/. SoftTH initialised and eve client launched, but white screen of doom ensued. Client is clearly still running, as if you move your mouse around you can see some tooltips popping up from the interface in the background. Unworkable though, as the entire screen is opaque.
Interestingly this method spawns a command prompt (I have python installed, perhaps this is why?) with the following:

Whilst this is interesting (and has me wondering - who is Michelle? ) it doesn't really shed any further light on how this might be made to function with Eve. SoftTH logs showed something interesting though:

Ok, cracked it - piccy!
More importantly though, this is how to do it:
Make an extra folder inside Eve called SoftTH (or call it cheese if you like, doesn't make a difference) Copy the files from SoftTH into your SoftTH folder Create a shortcut to <path to eve>\bin\exefile.exe Edit the shortcut's Start In attribute to point to <path to eve>\SoftTH\
Once these steps are completed, you need to edit your SoftTH.cfg file:
[config] deviceIDLeft=1 deviceIDright=2 secondaryWidth=1440 secondaryHeight=900 secondaryRefresh=60 secondaryFormat=RGB32 uploadMethod=blit forceAffinity=1 borderSize=0 sideExtraWidth=auto noHotkeys=0 noOSD=0
[Direct3D] lensCorrection=0 lensCorrectionEdge=0 hideNondefaultDevices=0 forceHorizontalFOV=0 forceResolutionWidth=4320 forceResolutionHeight=900 force16bitDepth=0 sleepBeforeRead=2 useMultihead=1 delayedPresent=0 autoSquash=0 altResetBehaviour=0 d3d8dll=auto
[hooks] doHooking=1 doScaleMouseCoordinates=0 doScaleFromLeftScreen=0 doScaleWindowRects=0 doScaleClientRects=1 mouseXoffset=auto
[modes] 1440x900x60
I've highlighted the lines you need to change in bold. In these lines, you need to specify the DirectX identity of your left and right screens, the resolution of each screen (they must be the same resolution!) and the sum of your three monitor's resolution. Once these steps are completed, simply launch the shortcut, go to the graphics settings menu and select the resolution from the list. Note that you must run in fullscreen mode for this to work, which is a bit of a pain, but hey.

With an nVidia card you can run dual monitors by stretching your desktop across two screens, then fullscreening the client. Problem is a lot of people run their screens as a master and slave, even with SLI, so they don't have the option to do so. Under some cards the ability to do this has been removed or just isn't there in vista, but the vast majority works.
I currently run in 1920x1200 in windowed mode on one screen, or stretched across two at 5120x1600 (each panel at 2560x1600), and that's only with a pair of 280GTXs

Edited by: Camilo Cienfuegos on 28/01/2009 00:38:19 Aye, sadly ATI cards simply don't support spanning the same way NV cards do, and my attempts to get a spanned desktop resolution to be registered in Eve didn't get very far. That said, this works pretty well: now all I need to figure out is the slightly dodgy mouse (it's not dragging things like chat windows around 100% of the time, though oddly I had no trouble fitting a ship that way) and the god awful Field of Vision...
Dual screen I have tried before, but to be honest I'm not a fan. There's something about a bezel slicing my ship in two that I find slightly uncomfortable! |

The advantage of 3 over 2, is that your center is in view of a monitor... and not in boarder between them, making the experience much more enjoyable |

see, when I was still using a second monitor (alas, it broke and I can't afford to replace it yet) I preferred to run EVE on one monitor and have things like EFT, Vent, the forums and mIRC on the secondary.
I sure as hell wouldn't want to play any game on three monitors at once. The edges of the monitors would occupy too much of the field of view for my tastes. - Verin "Stitcher" Hakatain. |

You quickly adjust, especially given the fact that your centre screen consists of your ship, with the side screens holding every possible window you could have active so that you never need to hunt for your scanner/fleet/broadcast/chat window again. You can also have every single column active on your overview, and have it running the full vertical length of your screen.
Once you've tried it in combat, there is literally no going back. Whilst I do miss having Vent etc on the secondary monitor, I've decided there's only one way to reconcile this situation: a 4th monitor on top of the span.
Anyway, I cam back to this post to add one important detail to some of the instructions here. The config file that SoftTH uses must be read from the user's folder. That means that softth.cfg for Eve must be placed in C:\Documents and Settings\Username\softth.cfg (for WinNT5) or C:\Users\Username\softth.cfg (for Vista) One client: Three Screens! |

I would dearly love a proper mutli-screen windowed client: Main screen is a full render, but overview/chat etc could all be dragged off this screen and on to the desktop. I shudder to think how much work that would require to do, but it would be filled with win of epic proportions.
For now, SoftTH makes Eve playable again (even on a 1680x1050 monitor, real PvP means you're playing Spreadhseets In Space and not Internet Spaceships) by allowing you to offload all those extra windows to the edge of the screen. The job is done far better using the Matrox TH2G, but as a software solution SoftTH provides sufficient functionality. One client: Three Screens! |

Common guys. Please help me. I'm trying to run Eve Online
As of this moment I have a 8800GTS which is plugged into my main and left monitor and a 8800GS plugged into the right monitor.
The screens are 19"+22"(wide)+19" at 1280x1024 +1680x1050 + 1280x1024
I'm on Vista x64 and I'm using 1.09 with these configurations
deviceIDLeft=1 deviceIDright=2 secondaryWidth=1280 secondaryHeight=1024 secondaryRefresh=60 secondaryFormat=RGB32 uploadMethod=D3D forceAffinity=0 borderSize=0 sideExtraWidth=-400 noHotkeys=0 noOSD=0
lensCorrection=1 lensCorrectionEdge=0 hideNondefaultDevices=0 forceHorizontalFOV=0 forceResolutionWidth=4240 forceResolutionHeight=1024 force16bitDepth=0 sleepBeforeRead=2 useMultihead=0 delayedPresent=0 autoSquash=0 altResetBehaviour=0 d3d8dll=auto
doHooking=1 doScaleMouseCoordinates=0 doScaleFromLeftScreen=0 doScaleWindowRects=0 doScaleClientRects=0 mouseXoffset=auto
[modes] 1680x1050x60
Sometime when I tweak the settings My screen flickers to black and the desktop continuously until I terminate the process. But ATM all I'm getting on the middle monitor is a big white screen. I hear the game as if it's running but it's white. My side monitors still display my desktop.
This is what the Log says when I terminate the program from the white screen.

Why don't you just EXTEND your windows desktop to fill all three monitors, then run EVE in WINDOWED mode, select a resolution that fills the entire desktop, then reposition the game to fill the entire screen ?!?
P.S. Oh, nevermind, just saw you have ATI not NVidia and tried that approach already _ Create a character || Fit a ship || Get some ISK |

The third screen will cause the client to lag horribly, sadly.
As for the problem posted above, I'm at work right now but my configuration at home is almost identical. I'll post my config files for you when I get home at lunch time (2 to 3 hours). If my memory serves me correctly, this whitescreen problem happens when you're editing the config file in your eve folder - the correct config file is in C:\Users\Username\SoftTH.cfg -

I've started to wonder if it might not be possible to get a couple miniature LCD screens to attach on the side. I'm not talking full monitors, mind you, but little things that are the same height as the screen, but only four or five inches wide.
Don't know if any company has ever done this, but you could create a wrap around view and add to desk space rather easily with this kind of gadget.

Sure. Most graphics cards will happily rotate existing monitors, so what you're basically suggesting is getting something like a 2048x1280 central monitor and putting a pair of 1280x768 monitors on the side, rotated through 90 degrees. Just be sure to get a good monitor bracket that lets you physically rotate the screen.
Would look pretty smart I bet, and would extend your viewing area nicely without suffering from extended FOV nearly so much. -

You are on veeerrrrrry shaky ground here. I'm almost positive that this constitutes a EULA violation, as you are actually causing a modification to executable code in memory. Specifically, you are doing directX hooks, which forces the client to call functions that are different from the ones that it expects to be called. If they allowed this sort of program modification, then macros and bots would probably be able to take advantage of it.

Agreed, which is why I'm trying to be open about using it in the hopes that I'll get a slap on the wrist if it's deemed to be "wrong" rather than being hit with the banstick for being "found out" to be using it.
As I see it whilst it does technically breach the TOS, it's no worse than what was done in the past: An example I can think of was the hacking of the eve client to allow the use of characters from the Russian alphabet. -
