Here's something from the new dev blog (http://myeve.eve-online.com/devblog.asp?a=blog&bid=616):
Quote:
... in the solar systems on the other side of the wormholes you will find new exploration sites patrolled by a brand new type of NPC. The salvage and loot drops from these NPC's and the exploration site rewards will provide you with the raw materials you will need to reverse engineer the technology that makes construction of the new Tech 3 ship modules possible. ...
From this, it looks like they will use the existing invention mechanics (or something similar) to actually produce T3 stuff. I for one am delighted.
Anyone have any thoughts if these will be new skills required for invention, or if they will use the existing COSMOS "advanced" skills (e.g., Yan Jung Technology )?

If you take things literaly, then "Reverse Enginnering (4)" with the only prereq of Science V it is. New races are mentioned as well, so could be new technology skills to learn as well.
As far as prereqs: I'm thinking hacking, archeology, the usual probing skills. Pretty much all the useless skills I've trained and given up on, with some luck.

Probing skills aren't useless if you're a ninja salvage/lowsec mission prober.

Reverse Engineering is something they've had in the database for years that pre-existed invention, but was never made active. It has nothing to do with invention.
Every Blueprint in the game has had a field in the blueprint table 'chanceOfReverseEngineering', that at the moment, has no function. _______________ <Q> QUANT Hegemony Item Database

No they won't, if you look on over at the mega thread regarding the patch and wormholes, you'll note some of the responses have been that they don't plan on nullifying existing skills and equipment but just deviating them into two groups that overlap in function but not efficiency for the most part.
As far as banking which skills, because of the modular nature hinted at and the nature at which the mats are retrieved.
Best guess is on some mix of rigging and invention skills. My money is on invention skills to create prints, mats, etc.. while the actual rigging skills will be used in the construction process. |

EON mentioned 5 new skills to fit the new modular sections. 1 skill for each of the 5 sections. My guess is those will be pre reqs to invent the modules. :p

Out of curiousity, did EON mention the proposed names for those skills? |

I'm also going to assume that the respective ancient's technology skillbooks (as in Sleeper technology) will be used in the production or at least reverse engeneering process. Also the usables that are found in hacking sites like 2nd hand parts and current amplifiers might get a use since i think they have no use whatsoever right now. It would be very surprising to see them retain a no use policy after the expansion. |

In line with what's been said; there is a hidden skill called Reverse Engineering (which is linkable in game and found in EvE Mon) - If I were a betting man, I'd hedge my bets in that direction plus the other technology skills and complimented by existing probe skills.
But I'm prolly wrong and way way out - we shall see :)

The other technology skills will probably be used aswell since it would seem very strange indeed that they would be left out of the equation. 4 Races equals 4 different shipstyles since each race will get 5 different shipparts. PErhaps another dev blog will reveal the remaining 3 ancients as other rats that will be in 3rd space just as serpentis, guristas, blood raiders etc. can be found in different regions. ___________

I stand corrected then. In that case i'm going to assume they'll tie in with the invention as to broaden their scope somewhat. ___________

I feel like I'm pointing out the obvious here.
First off the first quote never mentioned invention.
Second invention takes an existing thing and makes it better. Where are the existing things? We going to make BPCs of sleeper stuff?
EON mentions new skills.
It's an expansion. They're adding things to the game. Huge things. Why would it use an existing system? |

Edited by: Freyya on 30/01/2009 15:52:58 Since when hasn't an expansion been building up on blocks already in place? It doesn't have to say there will be invention, but there will be reverse engineering. Invention is a system already in place and considering the limited time there has been (although alot of manhours) i would suspect CCP would rather build upon an already existing platform rather than to create a completely new platform entirely.
The 2nd scenario might of course be a possibility but there are already hidden (as in not yet released) Sleeper datacores and such in the database and even a skill called Reverse engineering. Hell, even stuff on tranq have a hidden field of ChanceOfReverseEngineering or whatever it's called and where it's at. Thing is, a lot is already in place and it would seem unwise to not utilize that which is already there. Though certain experiences might indicate otherwise.....
New skills will fit right in with the existing skills, no need to build completely new stuff when you're able to use and improve on what is already there. I'll go back to my Glass ball on sisi now!

My bet is that they will create a new mechanic to build the new ships. The skill reverse engineering is already in the game and i bet they wanted to do something with it for a long time. I totally missed that it was mentioned in the blog though.
As with the new AI they are introducing, they are adding the new stuff rather then changing the existing stuff. Adding building a totally new ship class to an existing mechanic like invention would upset the market balance unnessesarily(spelling? google says its correct).
Because if they would add the new ship class to invention a lot of people would put a lot of their resources into T3 creation and T2 supply and prices would be greatly effected. It is much easier to have all the T3 stuff, including the skills, be seeded from the new space.
This will make exploration twice as interesting and important, not only to find the wormholes but also to explore in Sleeper-space to find the hacking sites that supply the reverse engineering as exploration does in known-space for invention.

I'm not talking about adding t3 to the whole mix of invention but branching from t2 invention you have a whole new set of resources and datacores and what not to play with. New rules, new ingredients and new outcomes but the same or improved mechanics.
I love speculating ___________

Then you have misread the DEV blog. It says that the NPC race in W-Space will be Sleepers and that they will drop the components required for T3. Nowhere does it say that the Sleeper Tech skill is the one you will need, at this time that's just speculation. From my thoughts it would be very odd to see the T3 ships from all 4 races built using just that 1 skill. |

The field 'ChanceOfReverseEngineering' is the invention chance you see for T2 items, this is already in use today. It was going to be called reverse engineering before they changed the name to invention, and ditched the reverse engineering skill in favour of the 1 skill per race.
Always a possibility that they drop ship components which you 'reverse engineer' into BPCs which you then build from. ;)
There's no reason why they have to use stuff that is already in place, it's just bits and bytes and they can easily just make entirely new stuff that fits the design perfectly instead of bending existing items and getting a sub-par result. |
