I've already reah through several threads and also checked the official info.
What's this "redeem" function? What the heck can you "redeem"?
Also, where can I buy the PLEX aside from the market in game? Thought they would be available after the patch on the sire for $$$?

You can buy regular time codes and convert those into a PLEX item you can put on the market for ISK. The redeeming is for redeeming a PLEX you bought on the market to add it to your subscription time. |

The redeem function is a new function for you to buy PLEXes from the EVE-Store and have them delievered to your account.
You can buy a PLEX right now in Jita, for instance. Just look up "PLEX" on the market. |

Perhaps not if your account was not active and you neede the Plex to make it so..?

Yes, you can.
This mechanic is for when you buy a PLEX from the eve-store for REAL money. Instead of giving you a code in the mail, you can redeem it when you log in. By redeeming it, it becomes an item in your hangar.

In a different thread Chribba asked if the new function could be used to reactivate inactive accounts. A CCP guy said it's not the case???

All this feature does is allow for the purchase of in game items, out of game.
It also allows for promotional deals where other companies can pay to advertise their service and run competitions out of game, giving out prizes in game without having to be there.
Similarly CCP or E-on could run competitions where you win an in game item, via the use of a code which can then be redeemed into an item.

All they have done so far is put the client side of the redeem function in place - the web side is a few weeks according to the post deployment issues thread.
