I'm, a new player just starting out, and the only way i've found to make money on a consistant basis is mining. Currently, I use a Burst Frigate with 2 mining lasers (mining I and II) and an expanded cargo hold module. It takes me roughly 3 min. to fill up my 344 M3 cargo hold. I'm finding that I constantly have to dock, unload, mine some more, dock, unload.. etc etc.
Here's what I WANT to do...
I'm a University student, and I have a pretty big homework load. I'd like to be able to get a big ship with a huge cargo capacity and sit there and mine for 30 min. or more without having to re-dock, all while i work on my homework (not quite totally afk, but close to it). I was thinking that getting a cheap industrial ship with a HUGE cargo would work out best in this situation, but everyone tells me that i should never mine with an industrial.
Is there a better idea for afk mining that anyone knows about, or should i just go for the industrial? |

Well, that will work for pure AFK mining - but in terms of AFK mining versus profit per minute - you'll want to get yourself into a cargo expanded hulk and mine ice. |

Well... a hulk costs around 93 mil. I'm thinking that's a long term goal, especially since i have hard time getting to even 1 mil. |

Yup, i'm in an identical situation. I bought myself a Badger and strapper my Miner II module to it. Just go into .9 space and find some plagioclase or pyorexes, and i can haul back a load worth about 500k ISK within 40 minutes, while doing my homework or reading a book. Works for making some quick cash to skill up for a bigger miner from the ORE syndicate.
Good luck, and what Uni do you go to? |

You could, but an industrial probably can't fit very good lasers, though better than your frigate, I don't know. It depends on the ship. You could try jet-can mining if you're pretty much alone in the belt, though that means you need to move ore off the ship occasionaly, then go get your industrial and take all the ore back. |

Don't bother. Mine Veldspar or if necessary, Scordite. You'll make twice as much. Anything else is wasting time. Granted, you'll not get much with a single mining laser, but it is certainly good for super-afk. |

Try a Exequror (Gallente level 1 cruiser). With 4 T2 cargo expanders you will get over 1.700 m3 of hold (more if you train more levels in Gallente cruisers). 4 decent mining lasers will mine a minimum of 80 m3 each minute so you will have 20 minutes before the hold is full.
With 40 m3 of drones you can launch them and have a good defense against NPC pirates.
Edit: About 1 million available? try a trasher, Minmatar destroyer.
400 basic cargohold and you can extend it to 500 m3+ with t1 extenders. Even with low skills it should be capable of using 3 mining lasers (the CPU is the limit) and get 60 m3 each minute. That will give it an endurance of 8-9 minutes before filling the hold, not your goal but not bad.
Any industrial can use only 1 mining laser. So to get those 500+ m3 you will need 25 minutes or so.
Keep your sound on and dock when you notice that the lasers have stopped or you hear sone NPC attacking.

I understand, but think of it as a goal. If you have some free time on Sundays, evemail me in game and I can help you with it. |

Edited by: Raymon James on 28/01/2009 20:32:24 First off their realy isnt anything wrong with mining with an indi, its just not optimal. Try to get into a cruiser, you can fit more mining lasers to them and even if you just fit two your still able to shovel it in faster than with a hauler.
cargo expanders will up what you can hold as well
bascicaly for mining you have
Exceq (+)Cargo bonus (+10% level) drones (40m3) and a base of 600m3 cargo
Osprey aka Orespray + mining laser bonus(can only mount 3 however)+ 4 mining drones and 485 m3 cargo bay
Scythe + mining laser bonus (but can only mount 3) and a crap dronebay (5m3!)
and the worst cruiser for mining?
Aurgoror! seriously it can only mount 2 mining laser 2s nativly(skills will fix that but its still ugh time for fits that need cpu for other than the mining lasers) only packs 1 small drone and 465m3 cargo space (the Arbitrator is "better" but its a Drone boat, with all the issues that go with it(less cargo space for one and only 2 laser mounts) wich means the Omen is probably the best bet in Amarr for a mining cruiser(450m space, and 3 drones,(15m3) can mount 4 mining lasers and on some skill/builds 5)

That's exactly what I did while in school. lol
Get a Mammoth or Iteron V or something. You can put a T2 lazer on it, and some mining upgrades in the low slots for more ore. Target dense veldspar, and let the homework rip! Just have to move it around some when the rock gets depleted. |

I used to do exactly that. I focused on getting into an iteron 4 (fairly fast) and then slapped a miner on it and just let it eat the best ore in the area while I read or ate dinner or whatever. You can easily calculate the time it will take to load up and return to off load when it's full. Use EVEMON to find the best skills to gain access to t2 cargo expanders and increase cargo capacity and get into a miner II. It isn't going to be efficient on an isk per hour point of view.. but if you have things to do and want to mine while you do them it IS one valid option.
The pinnacle of this style of mining will be an Iteron V full of cargo expander II's and with cargo rigs. You can reach over 38,000 m3 with proper skills and just tech I rigs.
By the time you have done all of that you could probably have been effective in other ways, but like i said, high sec hauler mining does have it's place if home work or other activities are standing in your way to riches. |

Unfortunately going afk in hi sec with the roids the size they are now means you aren't going to fill a hull with ore as the roid will most likely pop a few minutes into it. |

You're still at the phase where mining into a Giant Secure Container makes sense. Find a nice belt in the range of a good quantity of Veldspar. ANCHOR your Giant Secure Container. AFTER it anchors, set a password on it that you will remember. Bookmark the container. As you mine, dump your ore into the container. Then grab your industrial ship to empty the container. You can anchor as many as you want, but if you don't access them for a month, they will disappear.
No one can steal from your Giant Secure Container if you give it a password.
At 3900m3, it will take you a little over a half an hour to fill it.
As far as Hulks go, they used to cost 500m isk. They are a lot more attainable goal nowadays!

A bit of advice. Don't bother mining in anything smaller than a Retriever. And even that's debatable.
Train salvaging and process belt or mission rats of the Sansha or Blood Raider persuasion instead. You'll have that 100M long before you have the SP to undock in a hulk. |

guys hes wanting to do afk mining,
Frankly the only real way to do that is with a large cargo bay. |
