Hello,
Recently I've recruiter some players "fresh from academy", being mine a PVP corp one of the first questions asked is: "Can you profit from PVP alone?"
The answer is YES you can! ONE of the MANY ways YOU can do this is a nice ransom! this easy 6 step guide on a screenie should give the new peeps an idea of how to manage the Ransom part!
First of all you have to trick someone into aggro with a canswap or a baitcan for example if in highsec or if in low sec hut with your directional scanner and f11.
Once you have your prey:

Point 1a: Specify a reasonable ransom (40% of value usually works) in this case "PAy 100 mil or dieeee" Point 1b: Check the money cleared, align towards station (in this case the poor fella paid 60 mil, more than enough for 5 mins work)
Point 2: Laugh about various pleas for mercy
Point 3: Tell him this could be kept confidential "if he wishes" or else you'll post it on them forums!!! "I'll show your antipirate friends how your antipirate hulk was ransomed for 60 mil" - then let him go
Point 4: tell him you'll be seein him around the area in the next days
Point 5: ensure the ransomed understand you are not a nasty growling pirate but a polite businessman
Point 6: blatantly take the **** out of his antipirate ransomed a**
I hope this covers the "how to demand a ransom" part of low sec piracy :-)

You fail on step three.
"Don't worry, I won't tell anyone." /turns around, "Hey everyone! Look at what I just did!"
(Actually, I'd say this fails as soon as you started posting it, especially with the pre-moderated picture. Try a link.)

mm dont know why that thingy happens with the picture, works on our forum nice.
Well i did ask him later about step 3, if he paid me another 50 mil i wouldnt be going around low sec anchoring cans with the link to this picture, guess all the local piwates might be more curious about him now, too bad :-) |

Edited by: Lana Torrin on 29/01/2009 00:11:40 Ok, so let me get this right.. - You catch a noob in lowsec. - Demand 100M isk - Said noob doesnt pay 100M ISK but instead decides on his own ransom amount - You accept this new amount and posture that you are an ebil man - You then proceed to let him go
Sounds to me like the noob just saved 40M out of this exchange. I'd have popped him for not paying the full amount.
Edit: changed made to saved.. Also, your image sucks teh big one, cut out the crap you dont need? |

Better guide on how to ransom:
Step one: Once you get him to 50% hull, convo him and ask for money. |

If I were drunk and talking about something I knew nothing about I'm pretty sure I could post a better how-to thread than this. |

Message #4 is exactly what mafia tell you when they offer their "protection services" (if you say no, after 2 days your house, car and shop happen to be set on fire by "unknowns" no one will ever catch).

This. He's got an Hulk... I am playing since 15 days (3-5 hours a day, still in rookie chat) and already have 40M plus an Osprey and Mammoth and half the 4.5M learning books on 2 characters. Hulk owners have to be ****** that ****** rich to ransom.

I don't get it. You post about the right way to ransom someone and then you say how he gave you less than asked and honour it
If someone says they don't have the amount you asked for then you can pop them or ask them how much they have + ask them what they are carrying. If they have enough isk which you think is satisfactory then ask them for it, if they stall, refuse to pay etc then just kill them and get it over with. If they send you an amount of isk which you didn't ask for then kill them and treat it as a gift.
I would have killed him and thanked him for the 60 mill to be honest.

As a mission runner who operates in low security areas I have come to determine there are two types of pirates in EVE
Businessmen and Psychopaths.
Now if you aren't being silly (like say, running a long level 4 mission in a .4 system unaligned to a gate out) you should be able to bounce before they lock. If however this happens...
The psychopaths are really just out there in a cracked up frenzy for pods and there really isn't much to be done with them. Kiss your ship goodbye. My hope is that you weren't being silly (did you REALLY bring a Marauder into low sec? Really?) and will only lose the basic value of your modules (you DID insure that T1 battleship didn't you?).
Businessmen are an entirely different creature, and can usually be quite personable when they invite you to a chat concerning how much its going to take to not murder you.
Things to do when being ransomed:
#1 - Know your worth You should know how much your corpse (with all its implants) is worth. How much does your ship cost? How much does all the stuff in your ship cost? This figure should be readily available in your head or on a post it someplace in front of you in both gross and net value.
That means: How much did you spend on it and how much it goes for on the general market.
When the pirate names a figure for ransom, is it excessive? Even better have they lowballed? Everyone can hem and haw about what the ratio of value is, but just have the numbers handy and ready so you aren't left going "uhhhhhhhh" and having to figure it out while someone is contemplating carving their name into your hull with pulse lasers.
#2 - Don't stop negotiating while you have them in chat.
Lets say that you've just finished being ransomed and have given over X Millions to the pirate. Have you looked at his/her Corp? Have you been watching Local (if not, you have been being silly) and are they the predominant pirate force in the low sec areas you want to be running missions in?
If yes, Negotiate! Considering the pirate is still talking to you, and is honoring your short term contract of cash for not killing you, perhaps this is someone you can do business with!
Most pirates are very 'hand to mouth' creatures. IE - they want immediate value, so offering % of salvage generally isn't of interest to them (despite it being worth a ton of cash) as the market and production just isn't their bag. Fair enough, what about refined goods? Can you offer this pirate and his corp a sufficient carrot to be allowed a pass through this section of space? Keep talking, find out, some good offers are components, ships and other things that might be difficult to acquire for them. Perhaps you can even offer yourself as bait for other pirates with bounties, be creative!
If it comes down to cash, again, keep the numbers handy! How much money per day/week/month are you making in that space vs what they are asking for?
Never doubt the power of negotiation, as you are in the business of business, and so are they. These need not be mutually exclusive. |
