So just before Christmas I started working for Zavvi, who promptly sat all of their employees down on Christmas Eve and were told they'd gone into administration...
A couple of days before I was due to finish working for Zavvi I get a call from a Starbucks nearby, "We've found your CV, are you still looking for a job?". Perfect!
Now I read this: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/business/7857316.stm
So, who's putting bets on me being jobless again, and who thinks I'll keep it?

I just threw up a little in my mouth.
McDonalds has absolutely the WORST burgers known to mankind. They are bland broiled meat with no flavor or seasoning of the worst quality meat possible.
My toenails taste better than a Micky-D's burger.
Having said that, I LOVE their Chipotle BBQ spicy chicken sandwich and a large sweet tea <3 |

But places like adsa and subway are increasing jobs, i think domino's is expanding as well, so is BskyB so you know what to do if you want a new job, basically we've got past the sharp changes in the economy, there's no guarantee its gonna get better straight away but any further changes won't be as steep as the past few months.
As businesses start adjusting there expectations to cope with less available credit theres increased likely hood that more long term jobs will go and alot of part time, temporary work will appear on the job market but these are likely to shift periodically as the consumer market is changing to cater to ppl that want to spend less overall thus things seen as expensive will get dropped, and starbucks does have a social stigma attached to it of been expensive. While places that are cheaper or offer cheaper alternatives to the way we've done things are seeing a boost in sales, while go out for a mean when you can order in a pizza, why buy a dvd when you can have a sky subscription for the same cost etc. Rental market is gonna probably see a nice lil increase soon. |

69% plunge in quarterly profit! That's a lot. They've really got no choice but to close some shops.
On a brighter note though, Subway are creating 7000 new jobs in the UK.
Good luck with your job hunting.

There you go, be enlightened
As a side-note, OF COURSE places like Starbucks will be having big problems with the recession... they were almost exclusively depending on the fake/cheap snobbishness of people to make an outrageous profit on "meh" coffee marketed to appeal to that particular personality flaw. Now, only people who genuinely liked that coffee (yeah, right... I mean, considering the price, no way) or people who can still afford to be fake snobby but can't afford to be true snobby remain, so obviously profits will be plummeting.

Of I'm not overly surprised - it was more supposed to be people putting bets on whether I'd be being one of the ones to go
I just need a little cash while I'm at uni so I can afford to do things like eat

AMT >> Starbucks
In either case, I think with the world sliding into a depression there will be much less demand for pretentious coffees that cost several pounds a cup. Also, Starbucks deliberately overbuilt its cafes to the extent that they would cannibalise each other in order to maximise the destruction of competitors. With cafes just a few streets apart, they were always going to have to cut back eventually.

Heh. You know what? Every time I come to fire up a post, you've already put it so much better than I ever could!
Spot on ... the first things to drop off people's radars are those little luxuries. The truly rich will still be buying those hideously expensive monkey poo coffee beans!

*nods* its not uncommon to be cash strapped at uni's even these days, everyone thinks uni students these days are well off because of all the grants and loans where in reality most of it goes on tuition fee's which those proclaiming uni students have it easy these days never had to deal with them to the extent they are these days. Not suggesting this but if you do really get into trouble cash wise and can't find enough cash to get food in consider looking at salvation army kitchens alot of students will crop up there when there outta cash and still need something to eat. ------------------------------------------ Sig removed as it lacks EVE-related content. Considering tax receipts are going down the toilet and governments are looking to reduce private sector borrowing costs at the expense of raising their own, I would not be expecting funding to keep up. Worthy calling though. Good luck with that.
