Scammer> I am quitting EVE and have X Billions of ISK! Send me ISK and I will send you twice what you sent me!
I was in Jita (surprise, surprise) and I saw people doing this, and then tacking on what I had to assume were false claims that people were indeed receiving ISK.
Does anyone here know anyone that's actually FALLEN for this?
Seriously?
It just seems...really, really obvious. I mean, I know there are some really dumb players in EVE, but seriously?! |

People know slot machines take more than they pay back, but still they put there money in hoping to catch it when it gives.
This scam is no different. The better ones at it will pay out to start with to create a "buzz", not just use their own alts to keep all the givings, and then correctly judge when to stop paying out to.
The point isn't that it is obvious in the way it is set up (because it is obvious), the skill is in the preparation, presentation and timing.
Having said that, I detest the practice and have no hesitation in blocking any kind of local spam. If everyone did this and the scammers made no isk - they'd move on, woudn't they ? The fact this keeps happening suggests there are still enough rich marks out there. |

Some one posted in the forums a while back about doing this. They gave some back at first as someone else said to make a buzz. Then after while when the folks who first bought in give all they got and more back the scammer takes off. So they don't lose that much.
And yes people love free stuff, so much that it over rides logic. |

I tried it a few times, only had one guy fall for it sending me 100m. The rest of the time they just send 0.01isk etc.
Its not worth the time to do it.. So I'm not sure why people still do. |

Edited by: Dedalus77 on 29/01/2009 15:15:10 Even if the payoff is tiny, it doesn't cost the scammer anything to do it so they have zero risk with an outside chance of making some free isk. I'm sure there are some folks out there who do fall for this, just like there are folks who fall for this exact same scam IRL. |

Yes, I can say with 100% certainty that people fall for this.
About two evenings ago, I was sitting bored in Amarr and started doing a little satire about this scam (Ie, I was making it REAL obvious that I was doing it as a joke) and some people in local started playing along for the lulz, I assume.. with some people denouncing me as a scammer.
I announced, flat out, twice.. that it was a scam in jest..
And I STILL had two people that sent me money. One sent 5m and one sent me 40m.
Didn't cost me anything and I was bored anyways.. so there you go.

Edited by: Dirk Magnum on 29/01/2009 15:50:28 On two occasions I've sent a few hundred thousand ISK to a person just to see if they'd respond. In one case they sent me back a couple mil and I then said in local that the guy was legit. Of course I knew he wasn't really legit and had only sent me ISK because I had started at such a low amount and he figured if he sent me back ISK on that that I'd send him a much bigger amount next time. It's such an obvious scam, but if you start low they may respond to try to drag you in. Give it a shot next time you see one of these guys in local.

I'm probably the only one who does this honestly. Send ISK, not too great of an amount, and I'll triple it. For me, it comes down to, do you trust a stranger and willing to accept some kindness? And yes, as a way to do this properly for the real scammers, do a really low amount and never give more than they have given to you, thus you break even if anything. |
