So, I've been reading a lot of the threads in here lately, whereby people have come in claiming pirates have been dishonoring ransoms, and others claiming they've had dishonored 1v1's.
I'm not here to dispute which side is right, but I remember back to a year ago when I posted some of my first posts.
I recall saying something similar to "a pirate, by nature, is dishonorable, so he'll lie, cheat and steal anything he can, dishonor any ransom, etc. etc."
What I received back was a virtual overload of responses saying that I was 'out to lunch' and that this 'wasn't how EvE worked'... It was actually my first threadnought, as I was surprised at the vehemence of the responses - I was attacked, insulted, taught and told by any means required to get the point across.
I find it 'interesting', to say the least, that in one short year, there are no posts calling out those who are doing all of the things I asked about when I was just starting out. All there seems to be are posts of past combatants, ex-corpmates, enemies and friends, jumping in and quickly making every thread a 'he said/she said' smackfest.
I'll say this - EvE, and the EvE-O forums are never boring!

I would say that a true pirate would never dishonor a ransom. Nor would a true pirate ever really put himself out there for a 1 v 1, as most people DO dishonor them. Dishonoring a ransom is bad for business, if you have a reputation for not honoring them, where would your income be?
That being said, I would say GRIEFERs do dishonor ransoms.
How do you tell them apart? Hopefully the reputation of their corporation has already been in your mind before you have to make that call. |

Do me a favour, and don't turn this into another "Racketeers 4eva" thread. We know. Yes, Racketeers don't honor ransoms, and neither do those who've left Racketeers and have gone into offshoot corps. You're bad. You're evil. Yadda, yadda, yadda. We get it.

True pirates use piracy to fund their activites and use whatever tactics they can to make isk. My corp would always honour any ransom paid and your right no pirate would "agree" to 1v1, maybe for the first 30 seconds of the fight until his buddies warp in and gank **** out of them .
Phoney pirates however, have alts that mine and research for isk income...they fly under the black flag but are merely glorified PvPers who happen to be -10.
You can make good isk been a pirate by only using piracy as your sole income. As long as your in a corp where the loot split system is bullet proof and members are paid weekly.
I've survived for nearly 2 years now as a pirate and have honoured every ransom.

I'd put my hand in a fire to save one of my dogs or the wife but the rest of you in this game can go burn for all I care.
And when I was but a child, due to an eye injury, I got to wear an eye patch. Yarr

this definition works for mercenary also. it is therefore inadequate as a definition.

I've held the same opinion myself because it's the only one that seems true to the spirit of being a pirate.
I even tried to explain to those who honor ransoms or offer "protection" in a part of space that they are extortionists, not pirates. Unfortunately, many of them seem to have some desire to be known as pirates however incorrect they may be.
Originally by: Tchell Dahhn I find it 'interesting', to say the least, that in one short year, there are no posts calling out those who are doing all of the things I asked about when I was just starting out.
Lots of things change over time, and I think you're seeing more and more of us unsavoury types changing opinions on what makes a pirate.

i gotta say there is no true definition of a pirate but it seems the best ones (i.e most successful ones) seem to dishonor ransom and generally cause mayhem and tears. I still will stick to my guns and pew everything that moves though.

Hells has an addictive personality, anger management issues, and small-man syndrome. He's also not the sharpest tool in the shed. If you acknowledge his presence, he spins like a top. Best to completely ignore him if you don't want him spamming your thread with his army of alts.
That being said, I <3 Hell's. He's very endearing once you get to know him.
