Hey everybody,
Just started the trial version last night and so far it looks good. I've heard about EVE and some people said it had a steep learning curve, but i just wanted to try it out.
My question is pretty simple, however i didnt want to google, wiki or ask someone else for the answer cause that would have been too easy. I'm doing the tutorial making "mountains out of molehills" part 6/10. The goal was to get mexallon and pyerite and some other stuff and build some items.
My question is how should i have looked for the mexallon and pyerite?
I found the raw ore for pyerite just by wandering around my starter area Jouvelun (sp). But for the mexallon i tried messing with the sensors, space map and space map info icons. Unless i missed something, to find ore that i need do i just go to different systems and scout the asteroid fields?
My main reason for posting this question on here is because like i said i didnt want to google or wiki it. People in chat already told me what security zone i can find it in, but was there something else i could have done on my own to figure it out? or is scouting/asking other people the way to go?
thanks! |

Any ore is listed on the market and got a description that says what's in it. To find specific ore without help requires flying around in space. As it seams that's to much to ask in a internet spaceship game.

The best and quickest way to finish that kind of mission is to buy the minerals from the market and continue on with the tutorials.
Sure you can fly around and look for the asteroids to mine it, but just ask yourself this question: Is it really worth your time to research the system where to find such asteroids, fly there, mine the minerals and fly back just to safe a handful of ISK?
Believe me, this is not even pocket-change even for a 1 day old beginner, not to mention the time you safe that can be used for other, more lucrative things...... Unbanned since 2011.10.20. |

@ gfldex I didnt know the market had that feature, i'll be sure to keep that tip in mind. I just finished the tut mission, but i scouted all the asteroid belts in my starter area didnt find what i needed, but i went to a next door system and found the ore that i needed.
@ Nerath, the whole point of me doing it the way i did was to see if i could figure it out on my own. I'm not the kind of person to stop and ask every 5 minutes 'hey how do i do this' or 'hey i'm stuck someone pls help and give me ISK's'. I knew without even looking at the market that i could have bought the mats there and be done with the mission in 5 minutes. But that wasnt what i was trying to accomplish...like i said i wanted to figure out where in space i could find it.
If i decide to stick around, I figured there may come a point where going to the market for raw materials wont be necessary or it wont be cost effective. But dont worry if i know where to get something and i dont have any in my inventory, then if the price is right i would go to the market. Because in that case theres nothing for me to learn, so obviously it would be better for me to just save time.
TLDR it wasnt about saving myself a few ISK or time, it was about trying to figure out a problem on my own. |

If your Still Interested in mining, the payoff in the long run can be worth while, Some of EVE onlines pilots Do enjoy that aspect of the game.
If your looking into it
First, Skip mining with and Industrial ship, a lot of new Players think that because it has a large cargo it will be better, The downfall here is They only have one turret point.
Move onto a Cruiser of Your Selected race and go from there.
also, Skip the First Mining barge and go for a Retriever

Options for getting mex are
1) mine it 2) buy it off market 3) buy items on market that contain it and reprocess for the materials 4) don't mine, it's a suckers game
Expanding on number 4, seriously, don't mine. It's incredibly dull, not alot of money in it and you can make more doing almost anything else. Find a corp, do some missions for some isk then go get blown up shooting at real players, it'll be waaaaay more fun.
unless you enjoy mining, in which case.... egh |

Most systems have asteroid belts, check the solar system map to see what belts are present if your docked up.
Or undock and right click in space it will list asteroid belts and from there you can see how many and select a belt to warp too. The lower the security status the beter the ores present and the larger they will be.
.5 will have the best stuff empire can give you with out scan probing, all though unless you can harvest huge amounts of it wont pay out well for a new player.
However if the rock you need is there and you need it in small amounts for completing a tutorial go ahead nock your socks off. Just make sure you get more ore then you need, the station will shave a little off the top of your refine of the ore, and your refining skill will be crap so your out put wont be great.
May sound bad but I just want to make sure you only have to make one trip, not several trips after getting what you think you'll need refining it and seeing its not enough.
Quickest way to complete the tutorial is to buy the minerals from the market. Might cost more, but you'll get exactly what you need and you wont have to fudge the numbers. |

For mexallon you need to mine pyroxeres or plagioglase, see this chart for info. This chart shows you common ore distribution by empire regions. |

@ BlueMonkey, I've played a lot of MMO's and FPS games where the only thing you can do really is kill/destroy stuff. This is just my chance to try something different so i wanted to go with the mining/industrial side. Although i kinda get how EVE operates so i have to know the space combat part as well.
@ Jouron, so it is possible to scan or probe asteroid belts in other systems without actually going there?
@ Baneken, Although i do appreciate the info thats what i was trying to avoid. So far i've done 3 tutorials so thats 30 missions, and i've been able to figure out everything on my own. I didnt want to have to resort to looking up wiki sites of googling something if i got stuck. About to do exploration tutorial next maybe that will help me out a bit with how to find what i need to mining/scavenging/explore. |

Or many other things in EVE.
Of course if you like playing that way, just go for it. But EVE includes so little documentation that it is practically expected that you will read something, e.g. evelopedia (official EVE wiki).
There is good reason why EVE includes ingame web browser.

Of c. as you wish. There's nothing wrong about learning it all by your self but at some point on your EVE-career frontal payments will rise to a such a level that you have to look for mistakes of others to avoid them or risk losing your entire venture deposit. |

The exploration tutorials? I did managed to figure out exploration on my own. But it was because I've played a lot of military type and flying sims, that kind of stuff. Exploration is just using more then 1 source of information (your probes) to 'triangulate' the signal source. It's a familiar concept for me, and i actually enjoyed the exploration tutorial...i liked it so much that i go out into Jouvulen just to do it even when i have no mission objective hehe. |

FYI, if you decide to take up mining as a profession, you will be met with open hostility by much of the player base. Hatred is not too strong of a word either. Most annoying thing of the week: You failed to dock/jump because you are cloaked (in your Deep Space Transport). |

One other thing, it used to be that you could only use the ore mined in your mission encounter area to complete the mission. Guess this may have changed though. Ding a ding dang my dang along ling long |

If the mission requires to provide veldspar, pyrox, and whatsnot, most times, it doesn't matter where it comes from, but I remember a tutorial mission I couldn't complete because I didn't warp to the mission pocket and mine from there, others weren't a problem though. But I've seen mentions of mining missions making you mine dummy ores that have no market value and can't be reprocessed, so the only way to mine them is within the mission pocket I'd say. However, OP mentionned being unable to find the ore producing mexallon, without using out of game informations, and I would agree that it could be mentionned in the mineral's "show info", when it's mentionned in the ore's "show info" what minerals it yields. The game requires a lot of third party information sources, tools, etc. so trying to figure things out with in game material alone, is surely going to be long hard road. I wonder what's the motivation behind this process. [20:03:08] Sin Pew > I regret the auto zoom when my ship blows, I'd llike to see the fireworks at least if I'm going to blow |

^ Mining tut mission requires flying to mission location because a scripted rat attacks you, which triggers mission completion. OP was doing the industrial missions, eg Caldari would be asked to make a Bantam ( I accidentally made 5, but who's counting?), given the BPcopy and required to gather the minerals and slot it in a production facility Ofc, the lucrative 10mil the tutorial gives you for the basic missions made it simple to buy the materials. It made me think money making in Eve would be easy. OH HOW NIEVE I WAS. |
