Were those names accidentally switched around?
Naglfar in Norse mythology is a ship made from the finger- and toenails of the dead, and was a boat to carry Jotunn (souls of giants, or giant-like souls, or could also be Einherji but I am not 100% sure) toward the battle of Ragnarok. Nidhoggur however is a dragon that's chewing on a root of the world tree Yggdrasil.
It seems to me that the Minmatar carrier was supposed to be called Naglfar, and would ferry the Einherji fighters (dead souls) around, while the nag (which I would argue looks more like a dragon than the niddy) could chew on the roots of your POS tower.
So... we should switch the names yes or no?

Actually, I think you are right!
And I think the new "Nidhoggur" (old Nagl), should have 4 turret hardpoints and 4 missile hardpoints, with still the same number of highslots, so you can choose which weapon system you want to train for, damage will also be boosted a tiny bit with this. "Ruppie ain't no puppie." |

Yes, and there's no reference to bringing them to Ragnarok by Naglfar, only the Joutunn are to be brought by the protein-boat. :| Changing the name of Einherji to Joutunn and switching the names would be kind of silly, if these are only to be references and not some type of symbolism. Still, what other race would have neat references like this to their ships? A Phoenix doesn't get to ressurect itself once it's blown up.

IMO all those names were given just to sound cool and without any serious research behind it so best not worry about it at all. Sleipnir is an 8-legged horse, but wtf does that have to do with anything? And claymore doesn't really act as a two handed sword either. |

I suppose you could make a stretch that each of the radiators on the sides of the Slepnir could be a leg. |

i wouldn't be surprised if there is a bit of symbolism though cause the norse myths did come from Iceland and such

Huginn and Muninn are supposed to be Odin's pet ravens Thought and Memory. (Sleipnir is odin's 8 legged horse), so maybe the names for the muninn and rapier should be switched.
Fenrir is a huge badass wolf who bit off Tyr's hand and is supposed to kill Odin during Ragnarok yet in Eve it's a freighter with no guns. Maybe Sleipnir and Fenrir should have their names switched.
I agree I don't think CCP but much thought into what the names meant they just picked stuff that sounded 'cool'.

Actually now that I take a closer look at the ships, they seem to be named after specific things, but only by the corporations that developed them; Boundless Creation named everything after stuff from Norse mythology, Core Complexion named everything after bladed weapons, and I have no idea what Thukker Mix follows. |

I always thought Cerberus was sort of a good name for the T2 Caracal because it sort of looks like it has three heads. Arriba! Atomico Mexicano!

Interesting, never thought about the different corporations using different naming methods. My knowledge of norse mythology comes almost entirely form music like Bathory Wagner Enslaved and Burzum.
I have to admit it's kind of cool to see the names represented in Eve.

It's sort of similar to all Khanid ship having "negative" religion connected names like Anathema, Sacrilege, Damnation, while others have more positive sounding, like Devoter, Zealot, Absolution, Redeemer etc. And from what I see that's as much sense as you can ask.
But definitely giving them some sort of meaningful names with more in-depth mythological meanings would be nice. Than again, we're all used to how it is so switching a bunch of names would just create too much confusion to be worth it imo.

Clearly, the ships were named with little thought to their actual purpose. I mean, unless CCP took the song "Don't Fear the Reaper" a little too seriously. |
