Edited by: Terranid Meester on 29/01/2009 23:17:53 With the moddb awards and some new releases recently and in the future i'll list my three favourite mods who I think deserve it.
Project Reality - A Battlefield 2 mod just realeased its latest version last Friday, this is currently in my opinion the best Battlefield 2 mod ever. Got 2nd place in the 2006 and 2007 moddb awards. It has a more realistic approach to warfare and is thus very harsh. Small list of whats in it, single shots can kill, A10's, Russian forces, Insurgency gamemode, redesigned AK-47's etc etc. There are no original BF2 maps left in it, and good riddance. You need to download both core and leevls 0.85 downloads.
Get it here and read about it here - Project Reality
Fall From Heaven 2 - Currently in my opinion, the best civ4 mod. Fantasy based, it is almost completely unrecognisable from civ4. You got a load of unique civs from insane clowns, mercs, demons and more. Armageddon counters, heroes, units that steal promotions, magical items, dungeons and mithril are some of the features. Currently in its final version but still being patched. The background and story is also excellent.
Get and read about it here - Fall From Heaven 2 and here - FFH2
Dystopia - A Half-Life 2 mod based on a futuristic setting with corps versus punks and is objective based. Each map is different and although theres not a lot of people playing it at the moment, 1.2 (its currently 1.1) will be released via Steam along with other mods fairly soon (maybe next month). Its got great blasting action however it might be recommended to read about it a bit first, but you can dive straight into it, even though you might not know what you are doing. It also has cyberspace. Achievments will be in the 1.2 version.

Just finished UFO: Aftershock with heroic assault 2 mod, it ups the amount of opponents from between 6 and 9 to about 28 to 35, was a lot of fun started out having to charge with shotguns blazin, then finally got some snipers and high tech assault rifles and was able to pwn from a distance, then AP fed machineguns for dealing with huge blobs of power armoured wargots, then finally back to super close range plasma shotguns and sonic guns for fighting wave after wave of starghosts! overall took me about 4 weeks from start to finish. |

Duly noted. Oh and Fall From Heaven 2 requires the Beyond the Sword expansion. Also Dystopia, I believe only needs the SDK to run. |

Edited by: Dirk Magnum on 31/01/2009 00:07:14 Insurgency mod is very well done from a technical standpoint, but can be really frustrating to play with people who follow the usual free-for-all mentality of counterstrike. With no mini-map or player tags, and no active coordination between players the team kill rates can be pretty lame. I really like the fact that they made the mod with those features but most FPSs players really only ever worry about individual tactics (which for most FPSs is fine, or at least reasonably functional), and any group coordination often falls by the wayside unless you're in a guild w/ team comms or whatever.
I liked the Forgotten Hope mod for the original Battlefield, and now that I've gotten back into Battlefield 2 from time to time I'd love to try out Forgotten Hope 2 when I've got the time to wait out the download. The World at War Tournament now uses this mod. If you're a Battlefield player I highly recommend signing up for a World at War campaign. It's well-run and places you within a command hierarchy led by people who have done well in previous campaigns. The whole thing is very immersive.
edit: the Project Reality mod looks awesome.
