For 0.0 ratting which has chance PvP I believe Megapulses have the edge due to the lower fitting costs and the DPS of course, but for anything beyond 20 km you really need to switch to scorch in which case you lose DPS dramatically. Tachyons on the other hand can hit hard well pretty much to the optimal of MP II with scorch and still do high damage at very high distances with aurora.
But the MP have the tracking ability, so I ask you, the wise and ever generous group of S&M, is the range bonus of Tachys worth the tracking and fitting cost hit? Especially if I'm going to be salvaging the wrecks.

It depends entirely on what ship you intend to fit it on. Tachs for PvP when you get jumped on is a nono since even a slow moving BS will be able to speed tank you. So it's really down to MegaPulses if you intend to do anything else than 100km+ sniping. Besides, if you intend to loot and salvage, MPs are way better since you'll be close by instead of sniping them to death from 100km off and then slowboat to the wrecks. |

Even with MF pulses will reach over 20km, plus due to lower cap requirements you can perma run everything with an AB, no brainer imo |

If you were only intersted in killing belt rats, not worrying about pvp or salvaging, at least while in your belt rat killing ship, a 4x curator sentry rigged sensorboosted Tach Geddon would be your best weapon. (5 lights just in case a frig you want to kill manages to get under your guns.
But since you do care about those other things, it's no longer your best option.
