Anyone else notice a spike in ore thievery in high sec these days? I had three people steal minor amounts of ore from me this weekend, and it seems to be happening more frequently.
I have a couple ideas of how I can start baiting these people, but want to hear yours.
Anyone have any success with baiting can flippers?
Anyone have some ideas they want to share?
Are these typically newbies doing this?
Thanks in advance. |

Always been alot of can stealers, nothing has increased, if anything it is down.
Sometimes it is a noob, sometimes it is an organized group. Is the flipper something that can fight and an NPC Corp haulers conmes along to scoop it after it is flipped? That is not a noob.
Two man crew: bait them... Put an Osprey with 1 mining laser out in belt, drop can. Use Osprey to tackle, have your mate sitting at range across from you ready to open fire.

noob can flipping = target practise.
It's a marvellous way or learning how to use a SB and such. They also might be stupid enough to NOT understand what sentry drones do. |

just remember kids stealth bomber are you insta locking friends
never can flip in noob areas
and always pack a warp disrupter in your hauler and hulk so that the flipper cant get away ( only works if all are in the same corp)
and if all else fails use a smartbomb, 8 to be precise with a sheild plated and armoured plated abaddon you can be sure that nothing will stand up to the punsihment of dying in a colourful burst of flames
good night kids o7 and dont forget
violence is good

Osprey
Lows: 800mm plate EANM DCU II
Mids:
Y-T8 Mwd 41F Veiled Targeting Unit Webber Scrambler
High:
2 HML with Navy ammo 1 light AC (or whatever) with Repub ammo 1 Mining laser
14k EHP and a whopping 125 dps with 4 t2 light drones, but I know it works on most frigate sized flippers. There might be better setups, just experiment with what your skills can fit.
You can pvp in Hulks too, btw. |

Get a stealthbomber, drop a jetcan, fly 2000+ m's away and cloak.
Wait for can thief to flip and decloak. Rage when your missiles miss as thief expected this and is aligned, then takes ore 2 seconds before warp kicks in. Recloak, wait for thief to come back. Decloak, shoot, recoil in horror as you see hauler coming at you at 5km/s. Stare suprised at message "your ship is out of control", realise thief switched to an interceptor, smack in local to save face, threaten war dec. Smack more when told to bring it, realise your bluff has been called, grudgingly set to red hoping you see them in low-sec some time.
Fun for all the thieves.

Use a P!ssoffsprey.
few small neuts, and some guns/missiles if you're feeling frisky, 3 webs, scram, 1600 plate, DCU and resists, bunch of light drones and go have fun. |

Have you thought about a Battle Badger? I haven't tried it personally, but it sure would be funny.
Depending on what the flippers are flying, you may want to try to get them solo. Fit some plates, a couple of webs, a warp disruptor / scram, and a blaster. If nothing else, it'll get some laughs.
Anyways, if you are having problems with can flippers, move to a different system. I used to do quite a lot of mining, and I can count the times on one hand that I have had someone come steal my ore / flip my can. |

Hulk:
2x small neut strip miner
pithi or gistii b-type small shield booster warp scrambler invuln web
damage control eanm
10x light drones, or 5x medium drones.
Edit - For the record, I've used this on assault frigates, electronic attack ships, destroyers, and one abaddon.

Arbitrator:
Highs: 1x Miner I 2x Medium Energy Neutralizer 1x 220mm Autocannon (named)
Mids: 1x Tracking Disruptor 1x Warp Disruptor 1x Web 1x 10mn MWD
Lows: 1x ANP 1x EANM 1x DC 1x 400mm rolled tungsten
Dronebay: 5x Hammerhead IIs, 5x Hobgoblin IIs, 5x Mining Drones
It's like the arbitrator was made for this
Good tank, good DPS and its technically a mining boat so the deception is there.
I am thinking of running a similar build on a vexor next time I am bored.
Have fun.

Can't be surprised. As the Overview has long since told me that the thief is flying a different ship type than previously.
Not to mention, somebody who sits in a lone battleship and haven't fitted a few modules to handle interceptors and other rabble is out of their mind and should self destruct immediately. |

for anyone dual boxing or bringing a friend I have used this effectively a number of times. Its somewhat boring if no-one is flipping though so bring a book.
Alt: Mining ship of some description. Its worth noting that a competant ore thief is going to be checking your ship for guns, whether its got a full compliment of mining lasers, is it using mining drones or combat and so on. Keep the ship to 100% mining it looks better.
Main: combat ship. Recons work but anything with a reasonably fast locktime will do. Battlecruiser is a good sized vessel for people that flip in larger ships.
form fleet.
alt gets into position in belt.
warp main in and jet can next to alt. Set a name on the can that includes a corp ticker (like Rens-22:34 [BLT])
Cloak main or warp main to a bookmark within about 10 clicks.
If anyone comes to the belt and looks a bit suspicious lock them with your mining ship. Hopefully they assume your going to be stupid enough to fight them and flip your can. If they havnt sussed it wasnt your can at this point you are pretty much in the clear.
Warp main in or uncloak then pew pew.
Rinse and repeat.
