As the title says, are alt accounts "required"? Many of the posts I read make it seem like everyone's running around with multiple accounts, using alts to check every low/0.0-sec stargate to avoid gate camps, using them to recon for pirate attacks, etc.
Do you use more than one account when you play? |

No, you don't need an alt. Never have used one myself.
Using an alt just to scout gates for you is a waste of $15. |

They are only "required" if the player style that you choose "requires" them.
There is nothing compelling you to choose a play style that "requires" multiple accounts.
It is like asking if the skill Production Efficiency is "required". For some play styles it is "required", but for most it is not.
Ultimately the choice is up to you. |

An alt account is not required but can be useful.
For example players that PVP alot may have an alt account that would earn them isk in periods where there is little combat on or when they are camped or waiting for battle.
Other users choose to have alt accounts so they can specialise in another area of the game. For instance one account has a PVP heavy character on it and the other is more science & industry or trading or research.
Having a second account gives more flexibility to gameplay but they are not mandatory to enjoy EVE. |

Yes, lots of them. Far more than I care to admit. But they are not required, I just like to have lots of options. |

There are advantages and disadvantages to using alternate accounts.
One of the disadvantages is that you split your time. One person simply can't manage two or more accounts as well as two or more people could. Thus, you inevitably lose some efficiency in trying to manage multiple accounts - whereas if you were concentrating all your time on one account and more specifically one character - you could maximize your development of that character.
The more accounts/characters you create, the greater the degree of inefficiency. So, it is something to consider as you begin creating other accounts. It isn't just the monetary real world cost of these accounts that's the problem, it's the in game overhead and splitting of your time that bring about a condition of diminishing returns. There are any number of uses for a Second Account so creating one is a fairly easy step but as you move beyond that you begin to face a steepening inefficiency curve.
Of course the number of clients your computer(s) can run at once is also a factor. For the moment, most computers capable of playing the game will run a second account moderately well.
This however brings us to the question of just what it is you're going to be doing with your various accounts. Mining operations currently work very well with multiple accounts. Running missions or trading also work moderately well though you need to watch it running missions. If you have to many ships involved you can end up with a division of your attention that ends up getting one or more of your ships destroyed simply from your being overwhelmed by task over load. PVP would exacerbate that.
So, creating other accounts is something where you really want to have a specific purpose in mind before you create them.
The No Brainer of second account creation is making an account with a character that is going to haul for your miner. Team mining is vastly superior to mining solo and having a hauler you can not only trust - but depend on being there for you - greatly enhances your ability.
Thus, if you are now mining solo - then yes - you really should create a second account to haul for you if you can at all manage to do it. After that the utility of second account creation is some what reduced for occupations other than mining. There are ways to make use of them but not to the degree that team mining enhances mining ops.

"required" ? - no definatly not.
But since you can only train 1 skill at a time on any given 'account' many people do get alt accounts so they can experience another side to eve.
Its quite a shocking tactic actually. I mean, every mmo out there you can make an alt character, but in eve you've pretty much got to Buy another account.
Now that they have stopped ghost training, its even worse, not only do you have to have another account but it has to be subscribed as well.
The only respite is that you can buy your subscription with ISK, but if your fairly new it could be 6 months before you are even capable of producing that kind of ISK.
Obviously CCP like to fill their pockets with this cunning (almost evil) marketing tactic, but it remains one of the principle reasons why I only sub to Eve for 1-2 months a year (along with the extortionate sub price) and I am capable or earning enough ISK, but can I be botherd to run lvl 4's for weeks just to pay for the privelage of having to grind even more isk to keep my account alive?
I know some people however who own 7 accounts, and between those accounts he can easily farm enough isk to keep them all subbed. But I like to think I have some kind of life. |

So lets get this straight, you are comparing an Eve account in which only 1 char trains all the time, to an account with multiple alts, that only train when you play that Char? and how is that any better?

To echo, not required. But it's hard to deny that the game rewards those who have multiple accounts. By that I mean it can be easier to do a whole host of things. Luckily, you can pay for accounts using in-game currency. |

Running multible accounts can be very useful especialy if you want to specialize in different areas of gameplay as well as if you want to move a capital ship around independently. Other than that you don't need more then one account. Beeing in a friendly corp and getting support from other players will enable you to play the game with only one account.
