I have a manufacturing alt that i want to train up for lvl 4 missions. As far as i can see (using evemon) it will take about 2 1/2 months to get descent skills to fly a battleship but i'm not sure what direction to take.
I guess my question is: what other ships are there besides the Domi and Raven that will do well in lvl 4's. Those two are only ones you hear anyone talk about, my main is already a Domi pilot and does great but I want to take a different direction. Any thoughts on other ships that i can devote the 2-3 months towards?

The standard passive-tanked drake should be able to do the job.
High: 7 HM Launcher Med: 2 LSE, 2 active hardener, 2 passive hardener Low: 2 Shield Power Relay, 2 BCU Rigs: 3x Purger
If you Train for T2, tank should be enough for most Missions, bestnamed and/or faction fit should be able to do the job aswell

Wow so i guess there are no other Battleships that can handle lvl 4's? I appreciate the response. I think if i went the direction of drake i would just put the extra 5 days in and go to a Raven.
Paladin would be nice but that might add another 2 months on to training if i go to Marauders.
I think if that's all there is that can handle missions, then we need some rebalancing for BS's.

almost any bs can do lv4, my hyperion and megathtron can do missions a lot faster than a dominix. Any droneboat or railboat can do lv4 easily. |

The Rokh is a decent mission-ship. Guns take longer to train to make them effective compared to missiles, which is probably why so many people go for the Raven.
I would skip the minmatar ones because of the split rack issues (takes longer to train), although they are good ships. With the recent boost Amarr might be worth a look, good damge and great tanks.
So, with limited training time, anything but Minmatar.

Most BS's can do lvl4's just fine with decent relevant skills (ie BS4, t2 tank, relevant weapon 4). In fact, there are only 2 BS's that truly suck for missioning, they are the scorpion and the typhoon. The scorpion is an ECM ship, not a combat ship, hence the problem. The typhoon can do them but as a mixed weapons ship, it's capabilities with limited skill points are very limited.
I recommend the following ships for lvl4's: Apocalypse (if in amarr space), Maelstrom, Raven, Dominix, Hyperion/Megathron/Rokh (gallante/caldari space), Abaddon (high SP in amarr).
The Raven is the most versatile of these as it can choose primary damage type to match the local rats. However this comes at the expense of overall damage and thus the more specialized gunboats are more effective in their respective regions.

I would take a pretty good look at the Tempest and Maelstrom from Minmatar. Since you don't NEED autocannons if you're going as a mission runner, the Tempest and Maelstrom deliver solid options for lvl 4's.
Also, the Typhoon is much-maligned, but can be a great ship...It needs the most SP though.
Maelstrom shield-tanks, Tempest is an active armor-tank. Either one would do you well, I think.
And artillery do some of the best damage at the longest range.
They're both great ships. |

Just fly a cruise missile raven and then if u feel like it upgrade to a cnr or golem. Ive allways believed that for pve use the best ship you can afford (without getting ganked in high sec lol). That way you will beable to complete the missions faster which equates into more isk.
I know some ppl fly ships that they find are fun or a challenge but since the nerf u do have to use you head a little bit more. Plus i just wanna earn as much isk as i can when im pveing and the raven is still the king. |

In terms of mission completion speed, i would say that it depends on your skills and area where you do them. Thats coz some agents give you for instance missions vs Guristas, in which case lasers suck; same holds with explosive and Serps/ Guristas, hence projectiles arent good.
The main reason you hear only about Raven and Dominix is simply because these two ships can load up different kinds of damage, to fully exploit the NPC's lowest resistance -> greater killing speed.
If you want to try something new though, choose carefully: amarr ships are great vs sanshas, blood raiders, rogue drones, and to a lesser extent serpentis. Minmatar ships are good all around, yes, even the Typhoon, but they excell at killing angels. Likewise, gallente ships are good vs serps and guristas.
Its all up to you. |

Apoc or its variants are great for missions against certain enemy types (Sansha, Blood, Rogue Drone especially) but terrible against other types (Gurista, Angel especially). If you are based in Amarr space and have the luxury of lots of mission agents to choose from, going with an Amarr BS is great because you can select only those missions you're going to ace. With the Gallente or Caldari choices you can take on all missions with equal mediocrity, so those are better choices if you don't know where you're going to end up, or won't have a lot of choice in missions.
