First off, sorry for asking something so many have asked before. I just didn't find a statisfactory answer in the previous threads..
I'm a rather n00bish BS pilot. Been in game for some 7 months, and the only BS I've flown is my tempest (1400mm's&siege launchers). What I've started getting annoyed at, is that I never hit anything. It took me 400 L proj ammo to take down a 500k rat yesterday, and as far as I know, that's alot, considering the rate of fire of the 1400mm howwies. =)
Now, I'd like to hear the personal opinions of those that have flown multiple BS types; which one is best for solo npc hunting? On my thorax and maller I sport long range weapons too, which I suppose I would do with whatever BS I choose to try next, unless someone can share his insight on why I would rather use short range weapons. Of the cruisers, the caldari ones are the only ones I haven't flown.
Thanks.

I like the megathron, 425 rails hit cruiser and bs well. The 350 rails arnt to bad either and it is alot easier to fit 7 of them on. Use a tracking computer or 2 and you'll find that frigs go down pretty fast as well. Other would say the apoc, and they may be right. Hybrids fire pretty fast and there's only so much ammo you can hold in your cargo. Aslo the apco makes a better tank for those situations where you have warped into the the wrong spot. But I still like the megathron, and it is dead sexy. I just bought BPO's of all the hybrid ammo and carry them were ever I go, melt the loot and you have lots of ammo later.

to help make them turrets hit better, you need to know and love transversal velocity. you can show the targets transversal velocity by clicking the settings button in the autoscanner, go to the columns tab, and clicking tansversal velocity.
once you done this, your goal(esp. using projectiles) is to make that as close to 0 as possible. an easy way to do this is to "look at" your target, and double click in space on the same heading as him.. this makes you move the same direction, and minimizes your transversal velocity. then look at yer speed.. if he's slower, use that little speed selection bar on the ui to slow yourself down a bit. this will help you hit much more with those projectiles, as they have horribly low tracking.

Yeah, I'm aware of the transversal velocity. =/ I try to keep moving only in a straight line towards or away from the enemy BS, though still over half of my shots miss. I guess it describes the situation pretty well, when I say I need 400 L proj ammo along with torps to down a 500k bs and and his cruiser escorts. I mean, with that sort of ammo usage, I can only stay for 2-3 days before I have to go back to empire to restock on ammo. =) Besides, the times when I hit, it's usually 130-150ish, which seems rather low to me considering the rate of fire of the howitzers. =) I've tried experimenting with tracking comps, but ended up thinking the same as many else in the forums; they don't affect projectiles right now in the same way they affect other turret types. =(

Edited by: Marcus Aurelius on 03/08/2004 08:34:09 Yes, and tracking mods, tracking mods, trackings mods and range. That should help.
Just pump your EMP optimal to 60km and shoot from there with all the tracking mods fitted. You should hit fine against cruisers down to 20 and frigs down to 30km range.
And remember that most guns = not most damage Adding a damage mod or two can get you better dot then adding rcu's and that 6th 1400.

Your best option is to start with 4 siege launchers and work from there. The way projectiles are now missiles will do more damage in spite of the ship bonuses.
If you've decided to give up on minmatar ships then the Arma, Apoc, Mega and Raven are all good choices. (although the Raven will mean you wasted all your gunnery skills)

Or rather use 800mm guns.. which have shorter range, lesser damage, better tracking and better ROF.

To answer your question:
Best npc hunter out there is the Apocalypse. It doesnt use up ammo and it has formidable armor defences. Others say the Armageddon is better because of the damage bonus, but its always a fight against where to get cap from. Plus, with some of the spawns encountered i was glad i was in an Apoc and not an Arma :) -------

To lower your transverse, you don't necessarily want to be flying directly towards or away from your target - you want to be flying parallel.
As for damage, fit seige. I have 2.6m gunnery points (all for large proj apart from one skill) and my seige launchers still do more damage than my guns as long as the target isn't using defenders. You also need cruise for the interceptors that buzz you at 1500m and scramble/web you cutting off your escape AND the ability to reduce transverse velocity.
If you want a quick way to be lethal, take a raven. You won't make as much money, because the missiles cost but hey - you'll have the best PvP ship in the game as well :) -- We are the Octavian Vanguard www.octavianvanguard.net http://www.serenitymovie.com |
